View Full Version : Radiohead anyone?
I'm a huge Radiohead fan but I've only ever met a few people who are right into them.
Albums like The Bends and OK Computer are pure classics in my opinion yet they don't get played on the radio so I guess that's why not many people are into it.
Are there people out there like me who think that songs like Exit Music, Black Star, Let Down and Fake Plastic Trees are brilliant?
Funny how a band with the name Radiohead don't get played on the radio.:(
It's a shame how so many good bands get little recognition.
OK Computer is one of the best albums I've ever heard and I own over 400 albums.
Not a huge fan. The closest I'd get is to absolutely LOVING Thom Yorke singing with PJ Harvey in "This mess we're in". Brilliant song.
I like creep. But im not a really big fan of them.Prob cos i havent hears much of them.

I guess it depends on what walks of life you mingle in mate.
I know plenty of fans of the band. In fact 4 or so years ago, it became VERY cool to drop their name as a band you were into.
Personally i dont really see what the huge hype was about though. I own every album up to Kid A and sure, The Bends and Ok Computer were very good recordings and i did enjoy them at the time, but some people were talking about this band as the most essential thing in music for 10 years and such rubbish.
They lost me with Kid A though. I found that album offensive and a complete p*ss take of their fan base. Havent really ventured near them since.
I still think they'd sell large ticket volumes if they toured, although they'd wanna stop releasing insulting, experimental crap and drop the whole "its too hard to be a rockstar" attitude.
The Bends, Amnesiac and OK Computer are among my most played albums (I had OK Computer nicked and its one of the CDs I had to replace pretty quickly). My Iron Lung, The Bends, Exit Music, Subterranean Homesick Alien, Lucky, Airbag, Pyramid Song, You and Whose Army probably top my list.
The downside of Radiohead's later stuff is that its not exactly communal music that you can listen to with friends - with talk, most of the subtleties of it are lost and if you're not giving it attention it loses a lot. Its absolutely great music for when you're alone though.
Of course, The Bends is a solid rock album that could be played in any company.

I remember when i first got Kid A, i tried to listen to it in a few different surroundings to try and hear what it was i was apparently missing.
The only time i came close to getting into it was one night where i had a few, ah.. um.. enhancers (??), turned off all the lights, put the head phones on and pressed play and sat through the entire thing from start to finish. And yeah, i "heard" it and it wigged me right out!!
But thats a big effort to go to to try and get into an album and apart from that time, i cant say that album has ever done anything for me except make me shake my head and reach for something else in the collection.
Each to their own though.
I don't mind Creep.
The rest depressess the **** out of me.

OK Computer is the best album of the 90's. I love the band. I can understand how the later stuff especially could freak people out, but if you know their previous works, you can understand the progression.
Their live CD I Might Be Wrong is a bloody ripper, and you can pick it up cheap at any JB Hi-Fi.

No mention of "Pablo Honey"??? Their first album is worth a listen if you like "The Bends"... It's much more rockier than all their other albums, but isn't weird like Kid A, Amnesiac...
"The Bends" is my all-time favourite album... Kid A onwards is a bit suspect. But, i read somewhere there next studio album will be a return to their roots in "Pablo Honey" and "The Bends"...
They played Festival Hall about 5 years ago, but I lost my tickets the night before at Redheads. It was a foam party!
Well I'm glad I'm not alone then. I go along with most of what you have said. I have rarely played Kid A and I must admit that I can't remember much about it. I have a huge collection and if I don't like something then I guess I kind of give up on it.
Funny how you say the music is depressing. I never really think about it that way. A lot of the bands I listen to I guess could be described as depressing however often they are the bands that really get to me. ( I was brought up on Black Sabbath and Bob Dylan. Strange mix huh :) )
I'm more into the arrangements and the use of instruments and sounds rather then what the song is actually about. I like lyrics that are well written rather then what story they are trying to tell. The thing I like about Radiohead is the mix of powerful and quiet moments (Exit Music still sends shivers down my spine every time I here it.)

Sorry...caught napping!
Yes, I am indeed a Radiohead nut....hence the "Modified Bear" (from Kid A) in my avatar!
Doesn't matter what your poison is in terms of Radiohead albums...at least you aren't listening to regurgitated punk crap.
FWIW, Kid A is their best album in my opinion. I understand that it doesn't have ripping guitars like a Paranoid Android or instant emotional hooks like an Exit Music or Street Spirit. But underneath it all, it has everything you'd ever want from an album.
Every song grabs you at one point, even if you dislike them at first. Plus it's a concept album (in my opinion very similar to Dark Side of the Moon) and every song has it's place, which makes it all the more interesting. 10/10.
Their new album is most probably going to be titled 2+2=5 and was recorded in 8 weeks so that they didn't get bogged down in the studio. Phil & Ed said that it is like the best of The Bends, OK & Kid A. Expect a release date in June.
Currently the best band on the planet!
yes, i love the bends & ok computer...
but the one i play most is Amnesiac ~

I'm not a huge fan of Radiohead, simply because I have heard very little of their music. I love My Iron Lung, Karma Police and Creep however that's all I've really heard.
I s'pose I should get downloading ...
Its a shame that the reputation of Kid A has seen a fair number of people miss out on Amnesiac. Its a very tidy album.

I'd be one of those. Although after reading and contributing to this thread, i've actually pulled out my copy of Kid A (and subsequently Pablo Honey, The Bends and Ok Computer) and am kinda discovering some new things in it that i perhaps missed through not really putting in the ncessary time and effort the first time around. Must admit to not really being in a Radiohead frame of mind when i originally purchased Kid A, was more curious on all the reviews i was reading and extreme opinions of my friends etc, but its amazing how you can perceive something differently way after the fact depending on your frame of mind and what your ears have been accustomed to at whatever point. Have been listening to a seemingly endless line of run of the mill pop/rock stuff for various reasons (Foo Fighters, QOTSA, RHCP, Pearl Jam, Pacifier etc) which i very much dig, but have over-done a bit of late.
As it turns out, Radiohead were just the answer!!
Guess what the next cd purchase is on pay day?

It's funny how people say they need to be in a certain "mood" to listen to Radiohead successfully. I was cleaning my room the other day and whacked on their live album, I Might Be Wrong, and was singing along happily. That CD has tracks off Kid A and Amnesiac on it.

Here is a review which I think is representative of how Kid A should be viewed:

Kid A is a masterpiece!
No doubt that OK Computer is in the top 10 albums of all time for me. Real music with hooks and challanges. I just wish they'd perversely try and do a commercial album just for the hell of it. I need more hooks and less challanges.

I saw them play on their first tour to Melbourne, circa 94' and the middle of winter.
They played at the Palace, there were only 80 payers.
Got given some free tickets, went along with some mates. The gig was deserted.
I didn't really know who they were (I didn't own Pablo Honey, and The Bends hadn't been released in Australia). I wasn't that keen on "Creep", I actually thought they were American until I heard Thom speak.
I'll never forget that gig, it was the one of, if not the best show I have ever seen. Johnny Greenwood's guitar sounded brilliant - chills down the spine stuff.
We all just stood there, our jaws dropped, it felt like we were watching The Beatles play at the Cavern.

I hear ya brother.
That guitar sound is truely unique. "Chills down the spine stuff" is exactly how I feel when hearing them play.

I got Amnesiac back in about July 2001, and it is an excellent album.
