Quinn Mallory, a graduate student of physics specializing in string theory, creates a device capable of opening vortices to alternate universes. With a little help from his double from another universe, he develops the technology to the extent that not only can he send items through the gateway he created, but also, with the use of a timer, to return them to their point of origin. He uses himself as his first living "guinea pig."

His best friend Wade Welles and his professor/mentor Maximillian Arturo join him on his second test. However, the wormhole grows unstable and spirals out of control. Singer Rembrandt "Cryin' Man" Brown, driving by Quinn's house, is accidentally sucked through with them. When the timer is activated ahead of time, more than four hours before it was scheduled to, it loses its original coordinates, and the Sliders cannot return home. This leaves them unable to control when the vortices open, or which universe they lead to. The Sliders continue moving from universe to universe, trying to find their way back home.

Right down to the names of the characters, this had to be one of the greatest shows of the 90s.

Sliders was a great concept for a show. Things started to suck when they started killing off the main characters and brought in those
<Ned Flanders>"awful aliens"</Ned Flanders>.

One thing i didn't like was that they would have episodes where they land in a universe where one of the main characters is actually of some great importance in that world... like a rock or sports star, didn't think it was necessary... the fact that they are in a strange world wow'ed me enough, putting extra focus on the main characters for that world just cheapened it a bit.

Network interference killed the show. They made them do more movie parodies than serious issues eg Communist USA.

Yep, started off great but when downhill quickly.

Like has been said, killing off half the team because they aren't pretty enough and introducing evil dimension lord aliens = bad

An excellent show to begin with but once they killed off the prof it was all downhill from there.

I'm personally more worried about the following shows being cancelled:

Firefly
Arrested Development
Deadwood
Wonderfalls
Dead Like Me

Never could get into Sliders personally (who cares if the bulk of my post is off topic)

Arrested Development
Deadwood

Sliders had a pretty good run and went downhill for the reasons people have mentioned above.

Arrested Development was really good but think the writers would have run out of material without sacrificing the quality of the show.

Deadwood was plain awesome.

Was good, but went downhill. The first few seasons are well worth owning.

I always thought it was a slightly more 'over worldly' rip of 'Quantum Leap'..
