EXCLUSIVE: ST KILDA is set to announce that captain Nick Riewoldt has signed a new four-year contract with the club.
The new contract ends speculation linking Riewoldt to the new Gold Coast club.

It is believed that Riewoldt has signed a multi-million dollar deal which is the most lucrative in the club’s history.

With his playing contract, marketing and personal sponsorships, Riewoldt is almost certain to earn well in excess of $1 million a year

Personally, Im a little disappointed as I had hoped he would return home to lead the club, but he will be 28 then in any event. Hodge, Franklin or Roughead would be good options as I cant see Lock being annointed as leader without even playing the game.

Looks like the Gold Coast are going to have a tough time finding their high profile signings.

You can't deny this is a big spiritual blow to GC17. Everyone knows Riewoldt was meant to be their poster boy.

I think the lesson here is that loyalty is a little stronger in the AFL than NRL. Setting up new franchises is going to be a struggle. West Sydney is going to be a nightmare.

If I was GC17, I'd be going for Roughead. Get in his ear about how he can break out of Franklin's shadow and be a genuine franchise superstar.

We don't want Hodge. The dude is poo in boots. I still think big Nick is a chance to go at some stage in his career, be it even 2 or 3 years in his early 30's.

Very true. Wonder what will happen if Roughead and Higgins sign on with their clubs.

Has Geelongs Selwood signed on past 2011? He was another name that was being passed around as the poster boy of the GC17.

Yeah i agree Stereo , would of been nice to have him as he is a class player , but he is not in the age bracket that will be there when we are in flag contention , will be interesting to see who Clayton targets from now on.

GC has to get over this idea that they can just nick the biggest stars at their will. the only thing that makes any of these sorts of players leave a club is to go back home. commitment is what makes such players become better than the rest.

gc will get 1 a-grade player if they are lucky. you will have to be content with b-graders to inject some experience.

Agree totally very few QUALITY players leave their clubs and l do not see any high profile players going to the Gold Coast, it is more likely to be a mix of a some mid range players .
Riewoldt, Selwood, Franklin etc among others will not leave their Melbourne clubs, the AFL may be able to hand deliver draft picks but certaintly one thing they cannot control is delivering GC17 with ready made QUALITY players.

Terry Wallace could not have put this any better.

Mark my word, some big scalps will come North...in fact in true BF fashion, bookmark it:(

your clearly trying to have a go at me, but i really cant figure out how. your saying that terry wallace would say that gc will have to be content with only getting b-grade players from other clubs, because the a-graders wont leave their clubs?

the only absolute star to leave for money in the last decade is nathan brown, and even then its debatable whether he left for finals or money. the only other player of the sort of calibre you guys are talking about who moved in the last decade is judd. simply being able to throw money at a player isnt enough to get them moving anymore, particularly interstate.

Doubt Roughead and Hodge would leave given their recent comments.

Higgins will be a big chance, but finding tall timber will be very interesting.
