Slater and Katich both out for ducks.
New South Wales are 2 for 19 off 12 overs. Mail and Steve Waugh are at the crease now.

Waugh got dropped on 4 aswell I think by Husseys brother.
NSW are 2 for 50 odd now almost at lunch.
Good to see SA doing good by us, they are 7 for about 360 with Miller and Young both over 50, if they get 400 odd, maybe a bit more it will put the pressure on Queensland and make it very hard to get 1st innings points, If Queensland get 0 it helps the Vics heaps.
Let's just beat NSW first and completely **** them up.

Harwood is going to be a bloody legend. Dead set gun in the making.
Brad Young would be a fantastic all-rounder if he could take some bloody wickets.

Disagree. He's 28 and has spent far too much of his career hiding away in bush cricket. He's in the peak of his career at this point in time.
There was a big article about Harwood in the Herald-Sun recently in which Trevor Hohns said Harwood isn't out of the calculations for a spot in one of the national sides in the near future.
Admittedly the HS may have been pumping up Harwood's tyres a bit, and using such a cliched Denis Pagan type quote out of context to keep interest up, but anything's possible.
Hey Darky, what do you think of Steve Waughs 100's in his last two outings? Fair effort?

Hardly hiding away his back has been ****ed for half his life.I do agree though he is probably peaking now. Will play for Australia if he keeps it going though as 28 is not old for a cricketer and the selectors have said age is not taken into account.
And that is Steven Waugh 150.
Good knock. Playing some good cricket at the moment. A century the other day in the ING Cup and now a 150 here.
Could he get 200 ?

The pitch sounds like a batting paradise... before Christmas teams would struggle to make 200 on the MCG, now New South Wales are well over 400 with only 5 wickets down with Steve Waugh approaching 200.
There's no reason why Victoria cant bat well and save this game and stay in 2nd spot on the Pura Cup table.

Seem to be in this game so far but we did beat you by 9 wickets before Xmas. By the way we're 0/118 at the moment so maybe the pitch is a bit too good!
Watched the first 2 sessions, and yes the ball was basically sitting up asking to be whacked. Didn't help that Inness and Lewis were bowling absolute pies. Inness' ball to get rid of Waugh was a beauty though.
One of Haddin's sixes landed right near where this old couple were sitting. They had no idea where the ball was, it landed 2 rows directly behind where they were sitting. A bloody close shave, and one of many bloody good shots played by Haddin and Waugh.

Great to see Mott getting some form. If those 2 play sensible for the first 30 minutes tomorrow, they should be in for the long haul and we should pose a good total

Vics bat all today, and then take first innings points tomorrow. It will set up the next match versus queensland and get a whole outright win ahead of NSW!!
Grind them out of it VICS!

If I was the Victorian captain, I'd go for first innings points and declare one run ahead. After all, New South Wales batted us out of the game by making over 500, why should we open it up for them when 2 points would be sufficient for us to stay 2nd and challenge Queensland in the next game.

Be careful of how much you read into those HS reports as they have a history of creating articles like this full of hot air.
The classic example was when Mark Stevens attempted to convince readers that Ian Harvey was being seriously considered for the Test squad to tour South Africa! Laughable.

It will be interesting to see how Victoria shuffle around their batting line up for the remaining matches as Mott has surely sealed his spot for the rest of the season with his big ton. He may be moved to No. 3 once Elliott comes back and Hussey will be the one to go.

Rummans has struggled of late, so he may be the one to make way.

It's 6/369 at the moment - a few wickets since lunch. NSW looking good for first innings points, but I doubt there'll be enough time for an outright tomorrow. On a featherbed pitch like the MCG on obviously is it would take a brave (or suicidal) captain to declare and set a target.

Katich has all 6 wickets - has the world gone mad? :p :p
the guy can bowl....maybe he can be the next michael bevan! Lose all sorts of ability with the bat but somehow manage to gain a test thru his bowling...take 12 wickets in a match and then disappear from test cricket all together...

Got to the cricket just after cheese was out, for the next hour they didn't look like getting another wicket.
S.Clarke bored the sh*t out of everyone, bowling boucers down legside over after over. Katich didn't look overly dangerous.
Then katich got a LBW, some of the vic appeals in the first session on wednesday looked much closer but that is how the game goes. I looked forward to watching hodge, coming off a 100 in queensland.
What does he do, after 3 balls, he goes back and cuts a hlaf tracker to mark waugh at first slip. Moss came in, hit him for a boundary straight then tap a return catch back the bowler!! WIERD! Hussey looked like his brother, then katich finally got one to turn and bang had a 5 for.
White was a little unlucky me thinks, didn't look like a nick down legside but it left us in a little trouble.
The keeper looks good on 21, mott doesn't look like getting out so it will be interesting day tomorrow.

Onya Motty. Seem's to be bloody determined to do soemthing he's had trouble with : the value of his wicket.
Should be interesting tomorrow, but shame about Hodge and Rummans failing to stick around.
Hope Steve Waughs ok. Hit with a ball from a relay throw apparently?

Victoria are going for first innings points after New South Wales made their huge score in the first innings, so our scoring rate isn't that important.
I would be surprised if Victoria opened up the game for New South Wales after their tactics today.

The Vics would've reasoned that as they are ahead of NSW on the ladder, it would be much safer to limit this game to a battle for first-innings points instead of trying to declare behind and make it a battle for 6 points.
Interesting batting line-up for Victoria... five of their top six are interstaters who changed states to further their careers - three from NSW, one from WA and one from Qld.

Well, we are within 7 runs of taking the vital 2 points, thanks largely to Peter Roach's maiden first class ton.
As i type, we are 8-538 with Roach unbeaten on 101, and Mick Lewis on 1.
I don't have any faith in Lewis, or the next man in, Matty Inness, so fingers crossed that Roach can get us across the line.
Vics have just taken the first innings points with 2 wickets to spare:D
Looks like they may just bat out till we lose the last 2 wickets or bat till the end of this session and declare.
Current score is now 553 after Lewis has hit Katich for a 6.
Vic's declared at 9/563
Roach was not out 108.

It's good to see NSW leading wicket taker for this game is homegrown. :o
That's a great effort from the Vics. It looked a tough task at the start of the day but they have done the job.
Dare I say it, have we seen the last of Darren Berry? Roach could not have been more impressive with bat or the gloves.

I don't think so.
Chuck is still the best gloveman in the land. His ability to keep up to the stumps when the quickies are bowling, gives us such a huge advantage over other sides.
I think he'll see the season out before Crosthwaite become our number 1.
Again Roach misses out, unfortunately.

The old saying 'Never give a sucker an even break' does come to mind. I don't think they would drop Berry straight away but you never know.
Peter Roach has been unlucky during his time as Victorian keeper - has had a fine record with the bat in the few matches he has played. I dare say he would perform better with the bat then some of the current Victorian batsmen.
And this was an enormously vital 2 points to get against NSW - it gives them the chance to overtake Qld when they meet next week and makes it very hard for NSW to overtake the Vics in 2nd spot.

Yet we beat New South Wales outright at the SCG and then took a very unlikely 2 points from this match when some New South Wales fans were even talking about winning the game outright after making over 500.

In the match prior to Xmas Victoria had 3 "outsiders" (Arnberger,Rummans and Moss) and NSW had 2 (Katich and MacGill-well 3 if you say that Haddin is from the ACT!) and it was very much the Vic born and bred bowlers who did the damage!
Hussey has impressed me so far in his ODI career. He is only 25 so hopefully he can play for Australia one day. As for Roach, he should get a spot for his batting alone, which means I think Rummans should be dropped.

The bloke that impresses me is Klinger. I know his stats are ordinary but everytime I see him he looks the goods. ! innings that stands in my mind was watching him at Adelaide Oval a couple of year ago Vic were chasing about 180-odd and were struggling. This bloke looked a class above the rest (that included Elliott, Hodge, Harvey) and guided Vic home in a tight affair. I just hope Vic keep him on the outer and dont offer him a contract next year, he would be a very handy addition to the Redbacks. (hoping I know !!!!) ;)

'Max' Klinger has more talent then most, however when put under pressure, he folds.
Time and time again he has been given a chance, yet failed each and every time.
If we had a slightly stronger batting group, he would have been out for good some time ago.

If Roach continues to play it will be as a batsman not a keeper. We would be foolish to drop the best keeper in Australia on the strength of one innings.
Klinger did well in the one dayer today but he still has a long way to go.I reckon he can be a better 4 day player than 1 day player because he is pretty limited in his scoring zones and can get tied down.Hussey looks a good 1 day player and we have also found two good bats in Mcdonald and Jewell (both should have played more last season).

Spot on.
Given what Hookes said, i would expect to see Roach play as a batsman in the next 4 day game.
Although, they also have to find a spot for Matthew Elliott.
Graeme Rummans is one obvious exclusion, although he seems to get selected regardless of form (does he have photos?)

Rummans & Hussey would be the two to miss out.But where would Elliott bat ?
In the ING,he's been batting #4 or #5,so why not do it in the Pura Cup? The Vic's middle order is inexperienced.
Did Steve Waugh get reported for dissent today ? It was to do with him not going off the field when given out.

I'd still want Elliott opening the batting.
I'd simply put Mott back to number 3, which is his natural position.
