GROUNDS FOR CONCERN: Hawthorn has asked the VFL to check the condition of Chirnside Park after its forward Tim Boyle suffered a knee injury at Werribee’s ground in Round 4. Boyle ruptured his right anterior cruciate ligament in the last quarter and won’t play again this season.

Box Hill Hawk Julien Moussi also went down with a season-ending knee injury in the reserves match. VFL football operations manager John Hook confirmed that Hawthorn had asked for an independent assessment of Chirnside Park. “I think they feel the surface is pretty sandy,’’ he said.

“We’ll follow through with the local council and ask them to make sure everything is OK with it.’’ Both clubs signed off on the ground before the match. Werribee general manager Mark Penaluna said the surface was top-dressed and oversewn with rye grasses about a month before the start of the season.

He said Box Hill Hawks played a practice match at Chirnside Park on Easter Thursday and had no complaints about the ground. “If they had an issue, you would think they would have raised it, a) before the practice match or b) before the match on the weekend,’’ Penaluna said.

He said he had seen footage of Boyle’s injury “and I would have thought it could have happened at any ground’’. “I feel sorry for the kid. He was playing very well. It’s one of those unfortunate things. Our thoughts are with Tim.”
