Not wanting to steal ScouseCat's thunder (ok I did since I think his competition is a great idea), but I'm going to be running the knockout competition for the World Cup but dedicating it to bowling.

You must select a player who you think will take one wicket or more from the selected team in the nominated game. If your player claims a wicket or more, you stay in and continue. If your player doesn't take a wicket, you are knocked out. If your player doesn't play in the game, you are also knocked out.

The winner is the last person left standing and will receive the special BigFooty World Cup trophy.

There will be a nominated game every couple of days with a new thread posted with the names of those still in the competition. The cut off for posting your players is before the first ball is bowled in each match and no editing posts is allowed (otherwise you will appear before the BigFooty corruption panel)

The first game for this competition: South Africa vs West Indies

The selected team for this game is West Indies

My chosen bowler: Mervyn Dillon

Damn, these threads are multiplying...;) As I responded on the other thread, my pick is Nitini (should actually pick a different player to have 2 bites of the cherry).

Nixon McLean (sp?) my world cup guide from the paper was cut off a little short. Someone didn't check their borders properly before printing so I'm guessing he is the only Nixon.

I think it should be from both teams or everyone will be knocked out quickly.

Anyway, I'll go for Dillion.

Those who have stayed in the comp:

GoEagles - Merv Dillon
Zombie - Carl Hooper
ScouseCat - Pedro Collins
Hoggy - Carl Hooper
lufc618 - Merv Dillon
kretchy - Mervy Dillon
Kane McGoodwin - Merv Dillon
Deestroy - Merv Dillon
Kenny_01 - Merv Dillon
St_Kris - Merv Dillon
blueworms - Merv Dillon
Squeak - Carl Hooper
Wagstaff - Carl Hooper

Those to get knocked out were:

phatandphreaky
Unwritten Law
shiva25
Jaymin

Notably all of these picked bowlers who didn't get to play.

I would also agree with the view expressed by others here that it shouldn't be limited to one team. Makes for a less interesting competition and can see everybody get knocked out in one big hit.

Firstly... Thanks to everyone who has joined the competition for the World Cup! There will actually be another knockout bowling competition starting from the Super Six stage (so don't worry if your already knocked out)... and don't worry if your still alive at the end of the Pool Matches - you'll get a bonus chance!

Secondly... thanks to ScouseCat & wagstaff for posting up the tables and progress reports on the game. Much appreciated.

The reason I went against allowing to pick from either side, is that you have a very high chance of picking a player who will take a wicket. If its restricted to only 1 side, it's more selective as bowlers can have good and bad days.

In the event the bowling side doesn't take a wicket or the game is washed out - the current players still 'in' the knockout will progess to the next round. There will eventually be a winner!

So a great start to the knockout - I was rather suprised 5 bowlers took wickets from the West Indies. The next feature game will be Australia vs Pakistan, check the new thread for details.

Gees, imagine if Dillon didn't take a wicket, there wouldn't be many left!
