It should be called SH*Thouse

I love the English Sketch show and laugh for a full 30 minutes but i just didn't find this skit show funny. I only found the Darth Vader gags humorous. Overall, It just didn't make me laugh.

I will give it a few more weeks to see if it improves.

The Darth Vader sketch went on too long.Aussie's don't do good sketch shows. Why ?

Nup pathetic. Reminded me of those old school camps when you had to get into groups and make some funny or stupid dress up skit. Hence the name I guess. Only saw the John Edwards take off and wasn't even funny.

Probably because they rely on hackneyed jokes that have been done 1000 times before and they're unable or unwilling to satirise aspects of life that could be risky and could produce genuinely memorable humour.

Saw the first few minutes of this show, that was enough.

Thought it was pretty ordinary.

Except the part where the guy goes "Get in here ya fat mole"

When you're resorting to Star Wars references in your first week, you don't have many ideas.

Aww come on, the old Fast Forward and Full Frontal days were an addiction for me (and as young as I was) :D

And I agree, bring back Eric Bana, and JIMOEIN!

Fast Forward was classic, Full Frontal started off mediocre and got worse...

Power Pride
10 Feb 2003, 16:06
Should have been better. WOULD have been better if they had Dave Hughes in the cast! :D

Highlights:

"Get in here ya fat mole!"

"Fat mole's welcome!"

The Darth Vader/Death Star sketch.

"Need a hand?"
"No, its okay. I'm just having trouble keeping Gran under."

----

I found myself trying to laugh at it. But in the end I just gave up.

FF was good, but not a sit-com. OZ should never produce another sit-com ever. Even occassional good ones turn poor quickly. A lot of it has to do with $. e.g. Seinfeld had 100+ assistant writers. doubt an OZ show would have more than 2.
BTW, Larry David's new show supposed to be good. Anyone seen it?

How good a job would that be, having 99 others to work with, you'd only have to produce a single one-liner which goes to air each season and walk away with $50K+!

SKIThouse had some amusing moments, nothing too funny though, while the rest was either too laboured or simply not funny.

Unfortunately, it seems when it comes to comedy we Aussies just can't cut with the Brits and Yanks.

Nup, I disagree. Aussies just can't come up with comedy as consistently as the Brits/Yanks.

My favourite show ever to grace our screens is an Aussie comedy - Kath and Kim. Absolutely hilarious.

I liked it, but more than that it was COMEDY, not reality, and not lifestyle, which I have come to really hate. Johanna Griggs and Pascal Fox should be shot!

That's not true. There is lots of fantastic Aussie comedy. Partly, it's just a matter of scale. There are 10 times as many people in the states, 3 times as many in England.

Another problem is that the networks here are very conservative, if you pitch them something a bit radical they won't go for it. They want a "sure thing", or as much of a sure thing as they can get. The problem being, that with sketch comedy "a sure thing" means safe comedy that (as someone mentioned before) you've seen 1000 times before.

I don't know about the US, but I know (from firsthand experience) that English comedy production companies are more willing to entertain left-field ideas.

But to suggest that Australians don't do comedy well isn't true. Go to the Comedy Festival. There are some fantastic shows there each and every year, and not just the International Acts.

Or better still (shameless plug), go and see my show in the Comedy Festival this year. You won't be disappointed!

I admit I was a bit harsh in my initial statement.

Though what you said is probably the main reason why there's fewer Australian genuinely unique and funny comedies compared to the UK and US. I've seen comedians over the years and there's talent out there, but it seems the networks are far too conservative (bar SBS) to give the comedians a freer reign to push the envelope. Even on SKIThouse, the other night you could see plenty of opportunities to push the envelope a bit further (and no doubt, given the chance they would have) but it seems the network has a strong say on how far things can go.

Which is a shame.

Yeah, go to his show...

I predict that of the three sketch shows that will grace our screens this year there will be enough funny gags for just the one. And then they will fail and we'll all bleat and moan about how we're ****-house at comedy, etc. And the networks won't touch it (comedy) with a pole for years.

And then we'll go around again.

Am i cynical? Yes. What Yianni said about conservatism is true. Australia doesn't lack comedy talent, it lacks money. Until we put money into it we'll end up with the blandest **** around.

BTW - I thought some of SkitHouse was good. Some.

I don't even know about that. Given the number of American sitcoms over the years that I have thought were nothing short of crap, I'd have to wonder how many don't even make our shores. Only the really good ones seem to last a la Seinfeld, the Simpsons. Anyone remember the US attempt to remake Men Behaving Badly? To be honest I think the best humour in American TV tends to be in shows like the West Wing where they can slip it in among the drama.

The Poms are a little more consistent, but that's probably because they know how to be funny.

A huge pool of talent, a cut-throat standup comedy circuit and TV stations willing to take a risk (i.e. BBC) when they see something funny might give the UK an edge on making funny programs.

Smack The Pony is not one of the funny programs I have in mind here. It's the UK equivalent of Big Girl's Blouse IMHO. The Sketch Show is a shade better with the odd stand-out sketch.

If so,did anyone that hadn't seen it bother to tune in ?

SKITHOUSE was SH1THOUSE and will be either canned in a few weeks or on a 2am on a monday morning.

The jokes were pathetic and the so called comedians just weren't funny. Whoever told Peter Helliar and that other dumb Rove bird that they were funny needs to be shot, those two are useless.

That's a very American thing to do. They are apparently making an American version of The Office.

They also made an American version of Fawlty Towers, which was AWFUL. Fawlty Towers was SUCH British humour. How did the Yanks think they could make an American Basil Fawlty??

That could work I guess, as long as they get some good writers. I actually quite liked The Office, pity they only made a few seasons, hopefully the Americans will go for something a little bit different, maybe like a real life dilbert sort of thing.

They really did make a mess of Men Behaving Badly though.

At the highest level, I wouldn't say Americans are that much farther ahead than you guys. The difference is, we probably have more quality shows overall (but we also have more lousy ones too.)

The ratio of good vs. bad is probably the same as it is everywhere else, but we produce heaps more TV overall anyway than the rest of the world does.

There's a lot of bad B-grade sitcoms you probably won't ever see (although on occasion one or two of them does make it here, to my astonishment).

I think the best comedy shows are ones which don't have a laugh track. Generally, they don't need one, and we certainly shouldn't be TOLD when to laugh, we'll use our own judgement, dammit!
