Matthew Croft is a top footballer. Very under rated by most footy fans. But he is a highly accomplished player and very effective where ever you play him.

A while back we discussed the merits of where we should play him. I was very firmly of the view we needed him in the last line of defence as I rate him one of the best full backs in the competition. My view was also that we needed to steady our defence. While some other posters suggested he went forward.

My view until now has been our defence in 2003 should look something like this

B: Kretiuk, Harris, Croft
HB: Smith, Grant, Hargrave

that leaves Bassett, Harrison and possible Skipper as other options. Murphy, Power and Brown could also be called back if needed. There is plenty of experience in Grant, Smith and Kretiuk down there to help out the emerging players. Grant going back gives us a lot backline power and creativity.

But our forward lines needs some repair work with Grant no longer the main man. I reckon we should send Croft to Full Forward.

Having discussed this recently with Dogboy, Sig, Rocco and B54, I'm more convinced than ever.

As good as he is at Full Back we desperately need a big guy down there. Please stand up Brian Harris. It is time to start developing our key position talent and we have to start placing faith in some of these guys. We really don't have a lot of choice. Croft started out as a forward and knows how to play the forward line and would be better if given a prolonged run up there.

10 benefits of Croft going forward are

1. He adds experience to what would be an otherwise inexperienced forward line.

2. He would represent another tall forward option along with Bandy. He would have to be worth 2-3 goals a game.

3. He is a power player. Tough, uncompromising, does not shirk any issue and gives everything of himself.

4. Croft is also a smart player. Knows how to use his body to either mark or move the ball to our advantage.

5. His presence and unselfishness will bring smaller forwards into the play a lot more. Brown, Guido, McMahon, Johnno and others will revel in the forward line with a rampaging Croft doing the hard bullocking work.

6. Croft knows how to defend and tackle. This will help keep the vall in the forward half a lot more. It will not be so easy for the ball to come out.

7. He will take a quality defender with him this will free up K-Mac, Wiggo, Bowden etc. They will now get a 3rd or 4th best defender giving them greater opportunity to establish themselves and beat opponents.

8. Croft is a fairly accurate kick for goal.

9. I believe that Croft is a naturally attacking player and not the dour defender some may preceive him to be.

10. With a reliable forward target to aim at the Bulldogs will move the ball into the forward line more quickly. Defences will not set so quickly and give us more chance to win one on one contests.

I can see Croft being our Lynch style forward. A real power player who will pack some grunt and muscle into the forward line and bring many others into the play.

What do you think folks?

This may be a bit simplistic Doc compared to your impressive synopsis but I would play JexHead this way.

Back : Richmond, Adelaide, Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn, West Coast, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne

Forward : Carlton, Essendon, Port Adelaide, Fremantle, ,StKilda, Kangas.

Rohde will try and play match our players with the opposition to gain an advantage. For example against Geelong we would play a small forward line. Against Richmond, Hawthorn and Melbourne it is crucial to have extra height on the back line.
I believe all players should be able to play in several positions to be a good side. Luke Power played on the backline in the GF and did well.

I'm not sure where to play Crofty. While we do need a tall forward I reckon Crofty could be (is) the rock that a good defence is built on.

What I wanted to add to the discussion though was that if Our Saviour (Wiggy) can play out of full-forward then Crofty can stick with full-back. To that end I listened on the net to interview the Bubba did this morning on Sport927. When asked who he thought would stand up this season he said Wiggy and that Wiggy had kicked 3 goals in the intra-club on the weekend. Sounds good to me. I would also add to that that I watched (again) on video on the weekend the R22 victory over Collingwood. Wiggy was hardly on at all but about the only play he had any involvement in he lead out, crashed a pack, followed the ball up and got a handball out that lead to a goal.

If he can do that all this season then Crofty will be able to stay full-back.

If we are to play more accountable footy in the mid-field this year then we need a target in the forward line. Guys are not going to continue to lay their bodies on the line if the ball just pings straight back at them. We need someone who is going to at least trap the ball at worst or do something creative when the opportunity presents itself. Like Doc says Crofty is a smart player and I think he would be perfect for the job.

Doc. You dont see Sam Power settling into half back this year?

My concern over Croft in the forward line is that I have never seen him be effective there for longer than a quarter at the most. He has made an impact for a short while but then faded. Can anyone point to a longer period where he has been telling on the forward line?

At full back he seems to me to be a contributor for the whole game so play him where he is most effective I say.

crofty's a smart defensive player and i like him better there, but that doesn't rule out going froward occaisionally.

No, in my dreamworld he is playing on the wing sending his surgically precise passes onto the chests of our forwards.

Sorry to detract from your thread, but i think Sam Power is a strange one.

The kid has talent, no two ways about it, and to be honest, i'd like to see him on a wing, although there are many out there that believe he will do his apprentiship on a back flank.

My point is... It's a great problem we have, figuring out where all our up and commers and vets are going to fit in. I can't ever remember having a list this talented.

It's a great problem indeed :D
