Probably about time. We all love him, but he is getting on, and 75 is more than old enough to get a bit of time to yourself in your waning years, tending to the grapes at Chateau Verdaflore.

I'm also glad that plenty of notice has been given for the retirement, will get us a chance to adjust to him one day not being there.

I think this reads more emotionally than I intended it to be.

Might still do some work with the BBC in England, but retirement and the vineyard in France awaits.

Surely you mean Alan Macgilvray ?

And he was Australian.

Mr Benaud is up there with John Arlott and Brian Johnston as cricket commentators - and I couldn't praise him any more than that.

Personally think he's crap in print, but agreed with a microphone in his hand he is the business

Richie is great, but no one could beat 'Johnners' and his quotable quotes.

"The batsman's Holding, the bowler's Willey"

" He's standing there at short leg, legs apart, hoping for a tickle"

He's 72 now and plans to go on until he's 74/75. It's a credit to him that, at that age, he's still the best in the business (in Australia at least).

I reckon at that age most of us would be happy to still get the odd boner, and not to pisz our pants every half hour.

It will certainly be different watching the cricket on Channel Nine without hearing Richie Benaud in the commentry box.

Surely you jest.

I'm not knocking Richie, but you can't compare a TV commentator with a radio commentator. Richie's only ever had to fill in the gaps, not paint the picture.

I like H. Blofield. Only he can from talking about swing bowling to sponge cakes to Spice Girls to Becks to Gucci to Goochie than back to swing bowling.

Benaud will be missed, as will the pink blazer. KP owes him plenty.

Let's get the but behind the 12th man, Billy Birmingham, to pretend to be Richie after 2005. Keep the dream going.

Will be missed when he does turn the microphone off. It won't be the same if Bill says "Morning Simon, Morning all"

Is there a website where this announcement was made?

He's ok but I won't miss him. Never thought he added much to the commentary at all.
