Doesn't matter whether they're high brow, low brow or mono brow
Hell, you can include Grease II in your list if it happens to make it (it would certainly make my ex's list ... wonder why we split)

For the record, this could easily have been a top 10 list instead (hence I included honourable mentions)

The bottom 4 of my top 5 are in no particular order:

5. The Crow
Brandon Lee in his final movie, this was one of the first "dark" comic strip style movies to make the big screen. Kind of like The Dark Knight but 15 years earlier. Think undead cool dude guitar rocker with goth makeup seeking angry redemption in black leather and dim lighting. Top soundtrack to boot

4. House of Flying Daggers
Awesome martial arts movie with stunning visuals and sound, making it kind of arthouse at the same time. Just beautifully shot, this is one I can watch over and over. Haven't seen it on the big screen? You're missing out. Watched it but not in surround sound? You're missing out.

3. Heat
First movie I believe that Robert De Niro and Al Pacino both starred in, also includes Val Kilmer who does a great wooden Keanu Reeves impression. Like I had to mention "wooden". Super cool bank robber vs straight top dog cop. Generally good acting, some terrific street scenes

2. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
We know that Jack Nicholson is awesome. If you're undecided, watch this film. This is my high brow inclusion of my top 5. Nutty people doing nutty things and trying their best to create havoc with the crazy nurses. Great stuff.

And for my all time favourite movie ...

1. Jacob's Ladder
Tim Robbins in an early role, playing a Vietnam vet who is investigating the possibility that his platoon had some mind bending, aggression producing, halucynogenic drugs fed to them by the army. Took me about 3 goes at actually understanding this movie, though I was about 17 and thinking about the Narcotics thread at the same time. Just love this one.

Movie I Wanna See But Haven't
I think it's called Johnny Get Your Gun. It's the movie on which Metallica based their film clip on for their classic single One. I believe Metallica bought the rights to this movie, and therefore it was difficult / almost impossible to get for some time. Though I think it's available again. Thinking it's worth a trip to Amazon. For those too young or who haven't seen the film clip, SHAME ON YOU!! Also, it's about a WW II guy who has come back and whilst looks physically fine, he can't move a single muscle, so the doctors think he's a vegetable. Yet he can think clearly, and we can hear his thoughts. Freaky stuff, predominantly black and white.

Honourable Mentions
Monty Python's Meaning of Life. Still a cack
Kill Bill Vol 1. Arguably Tarrantino's best work, maybe besides Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction. Arguably Tarrantino's best work, maybe besides KB Vol 1
The Sting. Paul Newman, Robert Redford. 'Nuff said
The Empire Strikes Back. Shts all over Return of the Jedi, now think it's better than Star Wars

Anyone care comment?
Anyone care to post their own top 5?

Speaking of Val Kilmer, I was in America once and having a fairly shitty flight to San Diego. The other passengers were looking at each other thinking "are we gonna make it?".

The flight attendant must have been sick of banging her head on the roof, so went up to the cockpit (only separated by a curtain). I swear _ucking Val Kilmer was one of the pilots!!!

Nah - your movies were the thought provokers.

When you type "Here's Johnny!!!" and "Say Hello to my little Friend!!!" into the search you know what you're going to get!

In the middle of studying this movie at school, boring me so much.. rewatched the start around twenty times, teachers a little strange, and keeps going on about how important the music is at the start (when it flashes from the court room to him in the car)

I think I found it disjointed, and there was a lot going on that I thought needed explaining, that was never really explained in the movie

I probably had the book far too fresh in my mind when I saw it. If I did a top 5 books, it'd certainly be in there

I had the same issue with LA Confidential, and then when seeing the movie again some time later (and having not read the book for years) really liked it

5. Schlinder's List

4. Alien
You know, for some reason I always wondered why the hunted the bloody thing to begin with when a simple "hey Barry, check the airlock" *wait a minute* "oh crap it's got Barry, quick open the air lock, yay 98% of the crew survived!" would have sufficed. Baffling, especially after eating lunch and "oh hey there, I'm goign to scurry off and kill you all, later!" bit.

3. Tron
It's my nerdish pleasure.

2. Snatch
Damned gypsies...

1. Robocop
Especially considering Murphy was a dancer and not an actor to begin with.

Difficult to fit Bruce Lee movies in with Flying High ("Roger Roger", "What's your vector, Victor?", "Huh?") and Caddyshack, along with a few of the Clint Eastwood westerns, Mad Max, The Great Escape, a Sean Connery James Bond, and Monty Python.

Also a bit partial to Taxi Driver - reminds me of Milney Loves 2 Snap : well meaning most of the time, loved by a select few, but eventually loses it completely ending in complete bloodshed!!!

Some great movies raised by others - I've got the Shawshank on vid at home. Can't remember any of the movie (I suppose it was 10 or 12 years since I've seen it), other than that it was well worth a second viewing.

5 Donnie Darko

4 Godfather

3 Kill Bill Vol 1

2 Breakfast Club - bestest 80's movie

1 Casablanca - a movie I can watch over & over. Ingrid Bergman :thumbsu: More than just a romantic film (it's not mushy at all), dealing with the terror and loss of war, honour, courage, and self sacrifice.

3 Kill Bill Vol 1

To me it was a good movie, but we completely missed the feel of it since when I saw it there was my group of 8 people and another group of 3 people, so all through the movie we were just basically chatting about it before Lucy Liu and "OH HER HEADS FALLEN OFF!!"

So to us, it was a brilliant comedy effort.

What was the song by our own "Mullett o' Curls" Craig McLachlan?

"Heeeeeey Moaner! ..... Oooooooooooh Groaner!"

They should have stuck to doing more "Check ... Check one twwwooooo ... Check one twwwwooooo" for a real musician rather than forming a band with the name!!!

Guys,

I have been sick and decided to watch the Shawshank Redemption.

Worth another watch but I was troubled by how a guy could be in the same cell for 20 years, despite being in a jail where people get beaten regularly, put in the "hole" for long periods, and eventually die (or get released)???

Also the ageing of the characters was pretty _ucked, and Tim Robbins at the end looked as young as the day he went in!!!

Notwithstanding the major plot fault, there was some good characters - the warden was great (what an arsehole), the main guard, the "bull queers", and even the old dude who topped himself rather than live in freedom in a strange world.
