Latif to sue Aussies
From correspondents in Johannesburg
February 13, 2003
PAKISTAN wicket-keeper Rashid Latif has been cleared of racially abusing Adam Gilchrist but has revealed that he is going to sue the entire Australian team for defamation.
Latif leaves the ICC hearing. AP picture.
"They have ruined my name, my family's name and caused me immense pain," said Latif in an outburst which came after the International Cricket Council cleared him of an Australian charge that he had hurled a racial insult at Gilchrist during Tuesday's World Cup match at the Wanderers.
ICC match referee Clive Lloyd cleared Latif of any wrongdoing, saying there was no evidence to prove his guilt.
But Latif said he would not let the matter rest.
"I have approached the Pakistan Cricket Board for permission to take legal action against the Australians after the World Cup, and I am confident I will get that permission," the 34-year-old said.
Latif said what should have been a day of celebration for him and the rest of the team on account of the Muslim festival of Eid, turned into a nightmare.
"It is no consolation that my name has been cleared. I can't understand what made the Australians do this, I have no answer to that.
"Can you imagine living the rest of my life branded a racist? I am not that kind of a person and will never be," he said.
Gilchrist said there had been no apology from Latif and he could not make a judgment on whether he was owed one.
"I wouldn't have raised the issue if I hadn't found it offensive. I was shocked by the comment I believe I heard yesterday," he said.
"I and Latif had always had a good relationship both on and off the field. I hope there is no animosity between the two teams when they meet again."

There is a process put in place by the ICC to deal with such matters and once that is complete, that should be the end of it as far as I'm concerned.

Nothing will come of this.
Is Latif trying to blackmail Australia ? :D

Was what he said actually captured in his voice on Stump cam or whatever. Or is this all on Gilcrests reaction .
If there was vision etc of his saying something then he would have been found guilty.
Maybe just maybe he might be innocent.Stranger things have happened.

I believe only part of what he said was captured on the mic. The audible part was "****ing white................"
He was definitely heard using the term 'white'

"Fu$#ing white balls, they are very hard to see at this late point in the innings, wouldn't you agree old chap"
i bit more info of the incident from the west.
Rashid is understood to have called the Australian vice-captain a "white c. . ." while he was batting and Gilchrist was behind the stumps. Gilchrist approached umpire Asoka de Silva and told him what had been said, pointing at Rashid as he did so. Gilchrist was picked up on the stump microphone saying to Rashid "you're going to go for that."

I really do believe Gilchrist heard that. Why would he lie? With those ears he'd have heard Latif's heart beating.

Yet another example of the iron fist the Asian countries now have over world cricket.
Lack of evidence? Latif was quite clearly heard saying "effing white"! Either Clive Lloyd is incredibly gullible, or has received a quiet word in his ear.
All I will say is this - if Darren Lehmann can say "black" followed by a swear, not even directed at someone like Latif did, and get 5 matches, what is the difference.
Pathetic double standards by a racist ICC.

Surely you can't be serious Mase ... You're reasoning contradicts the major basis of our entire legal system.
Just like Gilly should NOT have to prove whether he was making the whole thing up.
BTW - is there anywhere on the net that has THAT alleged audio of Rashid ... none of the media outlets I've heard have played it. I've only heard Gilly's reaction.
Rat$hit Latif has dropped his threat of legal action.

In the words of Ben Folds
"You don't know what it's like being male middle class and white"
Are we really third class citizens?

No.
What I mean is, how can he sue the aussies for defamation if
there is also no evidence to prove that he 'didn't' it.
It is a bit tough letting him sue the aussies for defamation when there is no evidence to say whether he did or did not do it.
If he can sue for defamation and the court lets it go ahead, that means there should be evidence to say he didnt do it, and there isnt.
It isn't fair if they will let that pass, and then let the Gilchrist charge drop.
Let him sue, then you'll have sound technicians come in and blank out all the background noise and you'll hear what the little prick said.
He should have been suspended. Only got off because of his colour. Had of been a south african, Australian or a kiwi that said it and we'd be in more **** than Hansie was.

In which countries court would he sue?
hes not suing so dont worry. It was just a hot under the collar threat made in the heat of the moment. Once he cooled down he realised it was stupid, so hes dropped the threat to sue.

A wild and emotional conspiracy theory.
You should know better.
Clive Lloyd had no choice if it was Gillys word against Lattif's.
If it was the other way around and Gilly was convicted, you would probably say the same thing.

What evidence could you have for such an accusation?
Just another white person who feels hard done by, because of all the "advantages" colour people get, give me a break.
