GROUP D

Group D appears to look like one of the easier groups. South Africa shouldn't have any trouble disposing the likes of Scotland and New Zealand. Like South Africa, NZ shouldn't have much trouble defeating Scotland but this is T20's, anything is possible. Scotland is the unknown quantity in the group. How they will handle themselves, only time will tell.

New Zealand Seeding: 4
They were losing semi-finalists last year, pipping hosts South Africa to the last four on net run rate, though most people thought that South Africa were hard done by. However, it is what transpires on the field that counts, and New Zealand will aim to at least repeat last year's performance.

Squad
*Daniel Vettori
Ian Butler
James Franklin
+Brendon McCullum
Peter McGlashan
Iain O'Brien
Jesse Ryder
Ross Taylor
Neil Broom
Brendon Diamanti
Martin Guptill
Nathan McCullum
Kyle Mills
Jacob Oram
Scott Styris

Strengths:
Team: Their biggest strength remains their ability to fight as a unit, often punching above their weight. Looked at man-to-man and with statistics, they don't have any outstanding talent such as a Pietersen or a Ponting, but on the field, New Zealand, more than any other team symbolizes the meaning of 'playing as a team'.

South Africa Seeding: 5
Many feel South Africa were robbed of a rightful semi-final berth in the inaugural edition. To recap, they played five matches and won four of them. Their only loss came against India, but it was enough to deprive them of a semi-final spot on net run-rate. Ironically, they ended the tournament with a better winning percentage than any other team, including India. With a history littered with so-near-yet-so-far stories, South Africa will be hoping that their recent resurgence continues into this World Cup too.

Squad
*Graeme Smith
Johan Botha
Yusuf Abdulla
+Mark Boucher
AB de Villiers
JP Duminy
Herschelle Gibbs
Jacques Kallis
Albie Morkel
Morne Morkel
Justin Ontong
Wayne Parnell
Robin Peterson
Dale Steyn
Roelof van der Merwe

Strengths:
Albie Morkel has not been in the best of form in the IPL, but right before that he tormented the Aussies with some game-changing innings. The thing with a player like him is, even when he's not quite middling the ball, he's capable of hitting a couple out of the park. In a format where one good over can often make the difference between victory and defeat, South Africa will feel they always have a chance as long as he's still there.

AB de Villiers is currently enjoying the sort of form that he would look back on in his old age with misty-eyed memories. He's been consistently delivering the goods for whichever team he's played for - and has some stunning numbers to his name this season. An average of 60.30 in Test matches, an average of 55.90 at a strike rate of 96.04 in ODI's, and an average of 51.67 at a strike rate of 131.00 in the just concluded IPL. When AB bats these days, it seems as if he's wielding a bat made exclusively of the middle, with no edges.

Scotland Seeding: 12
The minnows will be looking to end the tournament with their heads held high, even if they lose all their matches. Anything more than that will be a bonus. They also round out a good tournament for the United Kingdom, being the third team to be part of the starting line-up along with England and Ireland.

Squad
*Gavin Hamilton
Richie Berrington
John Blain
Kyle Coetzer
Gordon Drummond
Majid Haq
Neil McCallum
Dewald Nel
Navdeep Poonia
Glenn Rogers
+Colin Smith
Jan Stander
Ryan Watson
Fraser Watts
Craig Wright

Strengths:
Their only real known face is captain Gavin Hamilton, and he is some way past his hey-days of the 1999 World Cup. As such, other teams will not have too much data to analyze on Scotland. Also, they come into every match without the pressure of any expectation, which could allow them to play more freely than their opponents.

I really like the look of South Africa in this tournament.

Bowling a little bit of a worry but certainly one of the best batting line ups. Looking forward to seeing them through out the tournament.

Shortened game between Scotland and the Kiwis...

7 overs each, and the kiwis are chasing 90 to win. Could be another upset on the cards...

thanks for the heads up, was wondering why it wasn't on... top night for sport isn't it? haven't seen a lineup like this for a long while...

2 games of AFL, cricket, International Rugby, French Open women's final, Grand Prix qualifying, Socceroos world cup qualifier...

Go to watch Bikin Beach and I get this 20/20 nonsense. Outrageous!

Big 2nd last over helps gets the kiwis over the line.

Lol, 7 overs.

THat must be the minimum?

Pretty sure 5 is.

7 overs is stupid. Should not be able to come below 10-12.

The minimum is 5 overs, which represents 25% of the allotted overs, which IMO is fair enough...

In 50/50 cricket the minimum is 20 overs, or 40% of the allotted oversm which I think is also fair enough...

Softish group IMO... Scotland need a win to survive...

SA has set the Scottish 212. AB went nuts at the end and Albie was hitting strongly. Disappointing bowling performance from Scotland. Coetzer took a scorcher of a catch.

Holy shit. Just checked the score. AB 79* from 34. That's insane! The bloke is a freak. Not long before he becomes the best batsman in the world.

Scotland are now 48/6 and are going to be the first team eliminated from the World Cup... this before three teams (Pakistan, Ireland and Sri Lanka) even start there campaigns...

I think this result makes the next game an absolute dead rubber in this group, because I think the Super 8 stage has the groups already decided...

It was a comprehensive thrashing of a minnow by SA (South Africa won by 130 runs). They played with intensity and Scotland just caved in. This is the second-highest margin of victory in Twenty20 history after Sri Lanka's mauling of Kenya in 2007.

South Africa 211/5 (20/20 ov)
AB de Villiers 79* (31)
JH Kallis 48 (34)
RM Haq 2-25

Scotland 81 (15.4/20 ov)
Coetzer 42 (32)
Botha 2-17
van der Merwe 2-17

AB de Villiers is the Man of the Match for his blistering knock of 79 off 31 balls including 6 sixes.

AB can pretty much put his name next to the best batsman in the game atm. He can't do anything wrong.

Smashed us in the test series, smashed the opposition in the IPL and now smashing the poor Scots around the park.

We agreed on this a couple of months ago and nothing has changed. he is a Gem and will only get better. Easily my favourite player in world cricket to watch at the moment.

You know what the problem is with the four ICC T20 threads?

Having to remember who is in which group and clicking each one until you find the right one.

Would have been advisable to call this thread:

ICC World Twenty20 2009 - Group D (RSA/NZL/SCO)

Anyway, I see that RSA scored 128 and NZL somehow couldn't make the runs with only 5 wickets down.

How does that happen  : http://www.cricinfo.com/wt202009/engine/current/match/356000.html

Mods have the power to make those changes...

The branded chokers choked New Zealand tonight. Great bowling from South Africa obviously restricted the New Zealand batsmen. The pitch started to slow down as the game went on which would have also contributed to NZ's downfall.
