View Full Version : TV ABC Tv as a kid - memories.
Kinda like Black JuJu's thread but as per this title :D
Thinking about my favourite movies as a kid got me thinking about TV. There were some real beauties on ABC. I know some of these weren't necessarily Aussie shows, but they were still good.
Round the Twist
Freaky Stories
The Ferals (absolutely one of my all time favourites)
The Animals of Farthing Wood

**** ! so many shows that I had completely forgotten about. So many memories flooding back
no ones mentioned Captain Planet
"Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Heart"
Johnson and Friends
Oakie Doke.
Rugrats
Arthur
The 90's had the best childrens cartoons, and it ain't nostalgia speaking either. Even taken out of my context, todays are just uncreative and lacking spark.
When were they ever on ABC?
Throughout the early 90's, it was ABC's version of The Simpsons (ie: shown many times @ 6pm).
I remember a lot of shows - leading with Couch Potato and The Afternoon Show.
Bananaman
Super Ted
Count Duckula
DANGER MOUSE!!
Sooty & friends
Vidiot
Finders Keepers (preferred the book)
Henry the Cat
You can't do that on television
Hunter (middle aged guy with a pet mouse).
Some science show hosted by Joe Mangle from Neighbours (PTY LTD - had some theme with "Infinity" lyrics)
Ship to Shore
Alvin & the chimpmunks
** Some random 5 minute clip of a cartoon drawn chicken/rooster moving around, while vision of real environments are playing in the background. I don't remember the name, but i can still recall the tune :D.
I did see Captain Planet and Rocko's Modern Life in their early stages (as well as Where's Wally), but it was also around the time where i stopped watching the channel for cartoons :(
Trapdoor with the plasticine monsters and AEIOU with the sand drawings were two others that havent been mentioned yet.
Read all about it was cool as well. We used to watch it in primary school
Count Duckula
Trap Door

Adventure Island, Kimba the White Lion, Banana Splits, Kenny Everit Video Show(watching it now makes you cringe, as does) The Goodies. Bill and Ben(Bop op little weeed), Sesame Street(yes it was on back then) and Play School. Tho we couldn't wait for six o'clock on a Saturday night for Countdown.

Press Gang was another that was must watch. Only used to be on Fridays. I remember when they were held hostage by a gunman in a two part episode and I put notes all around the house to remember to watch it the next week.
Joshua Jones. Loved the theme song.
Pingu kicked arse
Rugrats was my favourite of the full length cartoons though. Great cartoon.

The Ferals was ruined when they changed it to Feral TV though. Just wasn't as funny or entertaining IMO.
I used to love watching Vidiot as well. I always used to think the host Eden Gaha had a funny name.
Did anyone used to watch Couch Potato on Saturday mornings?
And does anyone remember Kaboodle?
Some other good ones:
- The Wayne Manifesto
- What-a-Mess
- Ghostwriter
- Fireman Sam
- Darkwing Duck
- Blinky Bill
- Babar
- Batfink
- The Adventures of Spot
- Heartbreak High (probably aimed at early teens, but I still used to watch it as a younger kid)
And another favourite that I used to still watch when I was about 11 or 12, just because it was so ridiculous - Zoolympics.
A funny true story - I have a mate who had the Ship to Shore theme music as his ringtone for a while last year, and I didn't realise it. After a night out in town, I stayed over at his place, and just as I was about to go to sleep, I hear the Ship to Shore theme cut through the total silence in the house. I couldn't stop laughing, just because I hadn't heard it in years! :D

What about Spellbinder? Greatest kids Sci-fi show ever!!
-Ben
Some from my day that haven't been mentioned:
The Alexander Bunyip Show
Watch This Space - with the talking house that may or may not have been a spaceship
Secret Squirrel - was he part of the Atom Ant show though?
The Beachcombers - with Nick Adonidas
Starblazers - Japanese anime where a WW2 battleship cruised deep space and wiped out the bad guys with the wave motion gun
My memory of after school viewing features a pink bunyip, the Banana Splits, Grange Hill, Monkey, followed by The Goodies at 6 and Dr Who at 6:30. Not sure that that exact line up ever existed, but it's what I remember.
But I'm pretty sure Countdown was a Sunday night 6pm show.

This from Wikipedia on Grug.
Grug began his life as the top of a Burrawang tree (Macrozamia communis), but looks more like a Grass tree (Xanthorrhoea). Resembling a small, striped haystack with a face, he is fascinated by the world around him and solves everyday problems creatively and without fuss. When dancing instructions are too difficult to understand, Grug invents his own dance and calls it "The Grug"
