In a massive boost for Essendon, gun young ruckman Paddy Ryder has agreed to terms for a new three-year contract.
Ryder, 21, has been a revelation this season and football operations manager, Paul Hamilton, says he has become a very important player to the club.
"We are well aware of how valuable he is to the team," Hamilton said.
"We are developing an exciting young team of players and Paddy is keen to be involved."

This is fantastic news. I always knew that he would sign and stay with Essendon. In fact I never even knew that he hadn't.

Good news considering he thought about going home. Rapt. :thumbsu:
Agreed, this is great news. Paddy could of been one of those players we lost. We should of offered five years!

I am pretty sure you will never see another 5 year contract at Essendon after what they did to our club in recent times.

Bit worried about how he said its gets harder the longer he's away. Hopefully in the next 3 years he finds it easier and stays for the remainder of his career.
Still, fantastic news signing a guy who has all the potential to be in the best half-dozen players in the league.

great news...just on the topic of ryder it looked to me that he was awfully lethargic against adelaide and wouldnt chase at all..any injury problems or just an off game?

Love it. I was seriously worried the WA clubs would offer him something ridiculous.

Yay is an understatement. I have been seriously worried about him wanting to go home. Thrilled to see him signed up for 3, 3 is the new 5 imho.

11 tackles and about 25 hitouts - if that's lethargy I must be comatose :p
(A particular shepard comes to mind too.)
He did get his shoulders strapped, and had post-match scans (hand, I think) that came back all clear. But I thought he looked fine, for someone in his position.
Back on topic - I nearly wet my pants in two different ways. Ryder just seems to be making parts of the game look easier and easier, and I can't wait to see where he ends up. He's just a kid! He has absorbed all of Laycock's potential whilst keeping his own.
I think we might come to feel the same way about Ryder as we did about Hird. I doubt I could've enjoyed Hird's freakishness if it was wearing another jumper.
The family thing was always a factor, and no one can knock that. I just hope the club does everything in its power to minimise the homesickness, guilt (you know what I mean) etc. For all the interstate boys.

Great news, but hope its not his last 3 yrs with us either ... he will be 24-25 at the end of the next contract and will be in his prime so it going to take a lot convincing in the next contract to keep him if he's homesick still by then

Maybe, but at the end of three years, hopefully he will want to hang around because we are challenging for a flag, or looking for another :D

I was just watching the BTV interview regarding the Ryder contract extension.
He strongly suggested that he misses his family and going back was really in the back of his mind. He also made a comment that the longer he is away from his family the harder it is getting.
I get a strong belief that he is going to want go back home for his next contract, just the way he was talking...though there is a long away to go before that.
I hope we are closer to a premiership at that point in time, so he doesn't decide to go. Plus, it will be such a bad time to lose him too. With West Sydney taking all the draft picks...
