Saw the digitally restored Wake in Fright at the Sydney Film Festival.
Thank God the epic 12-year search to find this forgotten gem was successful.
Tone somewhat different from the book. My reading of the book is that it was a psychological terror, a living nightmare.
This remains in the film though there is (surprisingly) a-lot of laughs! In the end, it comes off as a black comedy. The passing of time might have something to do with that.
Still, the kangaroo hunting scene is pretty full-on. Probably because it was an actual kangaroo hunt. No film magic at work here.
Just wish the best Aussie fillum I've seen for some time wasn't 38 years old...
Saw it today.
Felt oddly disturbed by the end and still do a bit. Great film but not "enjoyable".
Definitely worth seeing.

Wake in Fright was and is one of the best Aussie films ever .The comedy part ,no, just aussie humor at crap situations .It was black and unescapable, brilliant, nasty look at the Aussie bush, much better than blood fests like Wolf Creek Americanised poop.

Took the misses to see it the other night. Really really enjoyed it. Funny yet leaves you feeling disturbed at the same time.
The scene where the Doc is on top of the pommie fella... then it cuts to morning and the doc is basically nude.... chills!!!!

The DVD has just been released and I watched it again for the first time in many, many years.
Brilliant movie, probably Australias best. The subtle cutaways relating to aboriginal racism are the first I can remember seeing in Australian film and DEFINITELY out of place in early 70's Australian film.
I have not seen another film that managed to so accurately capture pre Whitlam era Australia. John Mellion, Jack Thompson and Chips Rafferty's are all brilliant, but it is Donald Pleasance that steals the show.

Every Australian should see this film.

Says the guy with The Night Porter poster/dvd cover as his avatar, that was one sick film. I didn't find Wake In Fright nearly as disturbing as that one, although it did have it's moments. It also had some humourous moments, I don't remember ever laughing during the Night Porter.
Definately one of Australia's best ever films.
