In recent weeks the 2012 movie has been formally introduced to the world, with a small glimpse of a tidal wave devouring anything in the path, including some formidable mountains. The Mayan calendar, which predicts the Earths cycle ending in 2012 could cause natural disasters such as; volcanic eruptions, typhoons and glaciers, polar shift, earthquakes, all on a large scale.
Word is this $200 million Blockbuster is just a by the numbers disaster movie and the word cliche is being used often in describing it.

It looks eerily similar to The Day After Tomorrow, which was also directed by Roland Emmerich. Plenty of special effects to blow the audience away, with ho-hum acting and an average storyline.
Just a run of the mill disaster movie IMO.
did I see the obligatory destruction of the Whitehouse? This time by a tidalwave carrying the aircraft carrier USN John F Kennedy. Wow Roland the irony is just too much to bare!

Probably very cliched, but I love disaster movies like this so I will see it. You know what to expect with a movie like this, so there's no point seeing it and then having a whinge.

I hope the "planetary alignment" and "pole reversal" theories are red herrings to keep the real cause of this disaster a secret until the movie comes out, because those are terrible justifications for the cataclysms we see in the movie. But then I've seen the Day After Tomorrow, and Emmerich doesn't let science get in his way.
In my opinion, the scenes I've seen so far seem to indicate that "Nemesis" would be a more likely culprit... that is, a dark star, or some other insanely massive body passes through the solar system and its colossal gravity wreaks havoc on Earth. That would explain the scenes with the oceans inundating the Himalayas and the total collapse of structures etc... and while not likely, it is scientifically possible.
If that is the cause of the catastrophe, I would actually like to see this movie because it's intriguing... if it's some bunk like a pole shift or galactic alignment, I'm gonna be really disappointed.

looks like fun
Just got home from seeing it.
Was really good too. Certainly better than The Day After Tomorrow.
Lots of action, lots of destruction, and even a few good characters.

just saw it in vmax. great effects, but other than that not much substance. turn off brain and enjoy the ride.
hate it when romance comes into it but.

Lol romance in these movies is the worst, cringe-worth and just not necessary.
Having said that, I enjoyed it for what it was.

the romance was downplayed tho, wasnt a major storyline or anything.
i actually quite enjoyed it. i usually hate these kind of movies though. my brain was conflicted the whole time
the limosuine scene, i spent it on the edge of my seat thinking "oh **** out of here as if that would happen..... but it did look amazing!!"
i agree with eberts review who gave it 3.5/4 ; anyone buying a ticket for this knows exactly what theyre getting into, and thus this movie will produce the most satisfied audiences of the year
although, i hated the ending. i wish they were a bit more daring rather than go for the cliche ending.
p.s. rumours of a tv show called 2013 based on a group of survivors trying to build the world again. jericho anyone?
Have to admit I didn't mind it. For what it was it was very enjoyable. Most of the elements to the plot has been done a million times before to a lesser degree in other disaster movies. But overall it is well crafted. A popcorn movie as someone put it. Not meant to be ground breaking drama, just some harmless escapism. On that level it works well.

When they tell you not to panic.....THATS WHEN YOU RUN!!!!
Its basically the first third of Deep Impact with better special effects but still a very enjoyable popcorn flick =)

i felt the characters/population in general were too calm.
i.e. when the drawbirdges were drawn up there was mayhem. then it seemed calm afterwards, until the bridge was lowered.

Agree, a popcorn movie, good way to kill a few hours on a stinking hot or wet day. Or am I being too harsh?

No you're about right. Saw it yesterday to avoid the weather in Melbourne for a while. Although frankly I was all for killing John Cusack at the end there just to lower the schmaltz factor a bit. Am I being too harsh? :D

I had the misfortune to sit through this three hour shocker. It has so many plotholes it's ridiculous. The special effects are ok but it doesn't make up for the appalling storyline. Worst movie of the year nomination.
This movie was really good. Although I think 3 hours for a disaster movie is too long.
So many unbelievable moments and the ending was horrible. Good special effects though.
7/10.

Being very generous I think.
Most of the movie is like watching a video game cut scene. As with most movies like this, all the budget went into special effects and left nada for the writing. Most dialog was simply a segue to another OTT special effects frenzy.
Some interesting CGI but overall a pretty ordinary movie.
4/10.
God it was poo. I normally like these types of 'turn your brain off' films but this was just poo. The ending was attrocious.
I enjoyed Woody Harrelson's character though.

Terrible movie. Saw it tonight, just terrible. The effects and etc were awesome but seriously there is only so much of buildings and mountains falling apart I can take.
Plot was average and the ending disappointing.
3.5/10.

That review of Orphan was a pisser.
"So far I was watching a documentary" . Or something to that effect.
It was fine because you knew what you were going to see. Disaster flicks are never known for their great acting/plots. There were quite a few funny moments. The plot was a bit messy, the ending was cheesy and predictable (especially when his son swam down to help him), special effects were over the top. A few of the characters were good.
Action movies without special effects are better though.

I knew it would be bad, but I watched it anyway.
it was bad and long and predictable and felt like I was playing a video game minus a storyline
Also Gordon is a very good pilot for a plastic surgeon

I'm always amazed at how well people react in life or death situations like that, under water.

Some good special effects. Destruction and mayhem are always fun to watch.
As soon as I saw the Mona Lisa being saved, I cringed. What was wrong with that picture? Plenty. Literally. If Hollywood is going to reference such an iconic work of art, at least do it properly. Plenty of people have seen the famed painting. For those who haven't, no need to treat them like idiots.

The only reason you would go see this movie is to see the special effects, but even then in some scenes the way buildings collapse unrealisticly. The Sun's radiation must have also affected the physics on earth too.
I would say as far as disaster movies go (from the last decade) Independance day, Day after tommorow and even War of the Worlds were better.
The only true classic disaster movie I can think of is the Towering Inferno. The original Posiaden Adventure was good, but I thought the remake was very poor.
I would give 2012 two out of five stars, and I think I'm being generous there.
I tried to shut off my brain going into the movie but I just couldn't help it with the incredible plot holes.
A tsunami being a huge wave in the middle of the ocean knocking the liner over??? No, it would barely be a ripple in open water.
The Queen and corgis tottering out? ****ing cringe

Not sure about your first point. No one has witnessed end of world type destruction yet so who would know how massive the tsunami would be?
Agree with the 2nd point, ****ing terrible!

All I can say about this movie is poor ****ing Gordon. Has a character ever been so pushed aside and forgotten as this poor bastard??
One of the worst films made, truly shocking and some of the most ridiculous characters and acting ever.
Some funny parts though, the Russian bloke and his two kids was comic genius at its best as were all the Russian accents.
Good to see yet another black President in a disaster movie as well.
Woody Harrelson's character was just .........i don't know what to say as i'm so staggered I wasted money on this shite, but you couldn't make up a more ridiculous character if you tried or were under the influence of a crack cocaine/heroin/morphine ball shot!!!

Now i'm usually a sucker for disaster/end of the world flicks, but this piece of shit was utterly terrible!
Bloody hell, could it not be anymore predictably cliched' and just ...bullshit? I mean i can switch my brain off and watch things on movies that 'defy gravity' but the escape scenes in this movie were just wayyy to bullshit.
Ohh will John Cusack resurface from the water???....*cue tension music and pause* of course he ****ing will! I mean he can survive the whole of California falling apart driving in his limo, also a Supervolcano driving a piece of shit caravan.
I admit the disaster scenes were sweet (especially the supervolcano) but they were all done and over with at the end of the first act.
The 2nd half was just a complete tedious bore.
4/26
Geez, it was rubbish! I liked The Day After Tomorrow but I thought the ice chasing the people scene was a bit much. Here we have a whole movie full of earthquakes chasing people, cars, caravans and aeroplanes! Cliched characters - the divorced unreliable dad, righteous black people, a junior scientist who discovers something and suddenly becomes chief adviser to the president. They even threw in my favourite Hollywood cliche - a control room full of people cheering when the hero saves the day. Lots of things that didn't hang together - it just looked like the script and editing had been rushed. Shame it was bad - there was a good movie in there somewhere. And it cost a fortune to make too.
I watched it on my home theatre big screen and enjoyed the CGI...but the story is pretty shite.
