They should give it a rest.

They are now paradies of themselves.

As someone who doesn't know their music particularly well, I've got to ask: when was the last time they had a new hit song/album?

As far as I know, their last major successful single was 'Start Me Up', but that was at least 20 years ago.

Out of tears round about 1996. Besides the Stones are such a big name once they release an album you can bet it'll go platinum pretty much on back order, I'm sure alot of bands would like that luzury.

BWTN I say the Stones last time they came to Melbourne and they'd easily put away and a few of these "Superstar" bands.

Do look a bit silly, but MJs voice still holds. Crowds are still excellent. The novelty of bands playing instruments is obviously a draw card.

While the demand is there, so will the supply.

I use to be a Rolling Stones fan and have lots of their Albums up to Tattoo You but have lost interest in their later stuff.
Would much prefer to see them at a smaller venue where they could maybe try and put a little heart into it. And maybe play a few different songs to the standard greatest hits set that they always give.
If the heart isn't in it then give it away.

Naturally their newer stuff isn't going to be hit material, these blokes are just shy of 60 years old (scary enough), would people of their generation when they were first around have been buying the recordings of 60 year olds? Even their older fans would only really be interested in hearing the old hits live. Their new songs haven't exactly set the music world alight.

"You're young and you've got it.. then you're old and ye canne hack it anymore"

Having said all that, how many 60 year olds can put on such a performance? They can still put on a hell of a show.

Anyone bagging the Stones should watch their mouth. These are probably the same people who think The Vines are the answer - let us see if they are cutting it in 30 years time. Many people say that the Voodoo Lounge album (1995) was the best Stones work since Tattoo You.

I am going to the Melbourne shows and I will let you know. These shows are definitely not greatest hit shows. Take for example the Enmore Theatre show in Sydney. Missing from the set - Jumpin Jack Flash, Gimme Shelter, Angie, Satisfaction...They are playing tracks off their landmark 70's albums - Exile on Main Street, Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed, etc such as Rip this Joint, Live with me, Happy, Can't you hear me knocking (a track I believe that has never been performed live before this tour).

If you want to actually hear how good this band actually is be at Cherry in Melbourne tomorrow night when Max Crawdaddy attempts to break his record of Stones songs in a row. Current record sits at 25 apparently and it kicks off around midnight.

Are you deadset serious? For ****'s sake this is the the band touted as being "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in History".
I love the Rolling Stones. I love their music, their history and everything about them. I'll be there in Melbourne. I can't wait.

As for the person who asked "when was the last time they had a hit song?" Who cares? What does a hit song prove? For Christ's sake Kylie and Pink have 'hit'songs! If that's what you call music, then good for you!

Listening to the Stones on vinyl at the Cherry is an infinitely better option (and very appealling option) than watching Mick and the boys impersonate themselves on stage.

"Hit songs" .... pfffff.

The Stones transcended that chart rubbish years ago.

I think they've been paradies of themselves for about the last 30 years but who cares?I love them, they are the greatest rock band ever no doubts about it.

I'm like Angus1 I stopped at Tattoo You, I haven't got any real interest in the stuff since then but I think it's pretty rare for a bunch of 40+ year old men to make fresh & relevant rock & roll. It's a lot easier for someone like Neil Young to keep making good music because the nature of what he does is different.Their back catalogue is so impressive though the lack of impressive newer material is irrelevant to me.

I'd be happy with either of those 2 set lists.

The Stones were the cutting edge of rock n roll from 1962 till about 1972.

Since then they've continued to make great music. Although they have tended to slip into a formula. Hence the accusation that they are a "parody" of themselves. I suppose that's one way to put it (an unkind way) but you could just as easily say that the Stones developed their style in their first 10 years ... and then just continued to refine what they do best ... which is to make Rolling Stones albums.

The Rolling Stones are quite definitely the greatest exponent of Rolling Stones music in the world ...

... fair comment?

More recent Stones albums, like Voodoo Lounge and Bridges To Babylon, may not be as innovative as Beggars Banquet, Exile On Main Street or Let It Bleed. The newer stuff may not be influencing the thinking of the cultural elites. But they are probably the greatest Stones albums of them all, simply because The Stones, in their mature years, have refined the thing that made them great ... their own unique brand of rock n roll.

As for hit songs ... who gives a flying root?

Britney Spears has had hit songs. Bardot has had hit songs. Destiny's Child has had hit songs.

Hit songs are no way to judge the greatness of a band.

No way whatsoever.

Unfortunately, the RollingStones have priced themselves way out of my reach. So I won't be going to see them.

I saw them in 1995. And I saw Mick in 1988. As a rock n roll band, they are as good as it gets.

But I'll just have to content myself with playing their albums as I have been doing for over 30 years. The old stuff. The newer stuff. It's all good. Some of it made the charts. Some didn't. Who cares? It's all good.

Right on Dash,

I, unfortunately missed out this time round. I saw they 'em on the Voodoo Lounge Tour in '95, and they were brilliant.

Too old? they still play great, so what's the problem?

Yeah, they probably haven't made a 'classic' album for over 20 years, Tattoo You (1981) probably being the last. (although i thought the Voodoo Lounge album was pretty good) but their body of work from 1968 - '74 is some of the greatest rock'n'roll ever made. I'd like to see a 'modern' band consistently produce the quantity of quality The Stones did over a certain period of time.

I defy anyone who disagrees that Let It Bleed and Exile On Main St. are two of the greatest rock albums of all time.

'The Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band In The World'?
Absolutely. I love those guys, Keef is one of my all time heroes and i'm spewin' i won't be there next week.

Like you said, RESPECT is the word........

I guess theres always the question....What if Brian Jones lived to see this and be a part of it? Thats how music goes i guess if Joplin, Hendrix, Morrison, Allman, Lennon and Marley live what sort of world would he have today?

PS
Mercury too....

I wonder if Brian Jones had lived whether he would have become a part of it?

They'd kicked him out of the band just before he dies & his input in the months before then had been minimal, Mick & Keith squeezed him out of any power within what was essentially his own band & the British security forces pre-occupation with seeing any of them sent to prison took a real toll on his mental & physical health.

If he was still alive you'd guess that there might have been a clamour for him to rejoin at some point especially in the last 10-20 years to help furthur promote some of these big money spinning tours but I wonder whether it would have happened.

I've read some stuff about him & despite the fact (or perhaps because of it) that he seems quite an unpleasant chap he still remains my favourite Stone. It should be rememebered that he was probably the best musician in the band, he turned his hand to so many instruments in the era of flower power experimentation-his sitar playing blew George Harrison away.

Greatest rock'n roll band in history by a country mile. Nobody else comes close. Sure, they are old, ugly and drugf*cked, but 30 years ago they were young, ugly and drugf*cked. They still sound great and their songs stand the test of time.

A little respect, please.

respect can be given (and theyve definately earned it) but that doesnt mean they are what they were, which thankfully seems to be what most people are accepting in this thread. not liking them for the corporate image they are now(not bagging them for it but personally it puts me off) is not a crime. as for best live act or best RnR band ever... well, everyone has their own opinion i guess. i can think of at least 4-5 bands i think are better (live and studio) but that doesnt suggest i dont respect the stones.

Each to his own young fella, would love to hear the 4-5 bands who are better live.

Just back from Melbourne, went to Tuesdays show. Seen a lot of concerts over the years, that was the best by a country mile.
Except for two songs, the rest were from Let it Bleed through to Miss You. Their best period IMO, for a corporate band they can sure play a mean, live two & a half hour set.

Five better live bands ????????????????????????????????????
Five better r&r albums than Exile on main Street?????????????

Pulease.

Totally agree. The concert was amazing. If anyone thinks the Stones are too old and have lost it, then they'd better think again. If there is another 60 year old who can still strut the stage like Mick Jagger, then bring him on. I'd love to see it!
Absolutely brilliant concert and worth every cent for the ticket price!

Have to say that I`ve spent $350 in a worse way.
Six rows back, two in from the centre stage.
My mate I went with has seen them three times, last time, Wembley, & Tuesday night. Said the other night was by far the best, cause it concentrated on the music, not pyro`s, stage tricks, ect.

as we've both suggested, its all a matter of taste and opinion on something like best lives acts ever. glad you enjoyed yourself.

The Ramones
Pearl Jam
The Who
Jeff Buckley
AC/DC

the one and only RS show ive been to was a great night however.

as for albums, Exile... is a great record. Back In Black would be the album i'd play to someone who had never heard RnR and wanted to know what it was all about.

Sometimes you need to put this "known the world over" spiel in perspective. I have not met a Singaporean <35 who actually knows who the Rolling Stones are. Wife went last night after getting a freebie ticket. Told her colleagues. "Rolling who?" they said.
Concert was 3/4 full and crowd mainly 45+ Singaporeans ('Stones were here in the 60s - entertain the Brits no doubt), and Whites.
On again tonight.
