View Full Version : Favourite Essendon player

This was done late last year, I believe. However I think this year could see a few changes in people's favourite players.

Personally Monfries has been mine since draft day 2004 (as a succession plan for Hird, although deep down the great man was always going to remain #1 until he retired.) Pears has always been a favourite of mine, however this year he has become my new outright favourite, by far. Even as a defender, I love watching him play (playing in the same position certainly helps) more than anybody else.

Figured it could help promote some positive vibes on our boards. Only one vote per person, so make them count. :thumbsu:

N.B. apologies for the poll; 20 is the maximum amount of options.

Mine's probably Winderlich. Lovett and Ryder are close behind, though.

Jason Winderlich. His speed, skill & goal-kicking attributes are brilliant to watch.

It's gone from Andrew Welsh to Ricky Dyson (because Welsh is Inj). It'll be great to see him back come Friday (touch wood).

Jobe Watson has been my favourite since he was drafted. It was always going to happen since Timmy was my favourite as a kid. I even asked my mum why diddn't she marry so I'd be a mini Watty, my folks just laughed at me. :o

But I want to pick them alll!!!

Lack of Slattery in this pole is blasphemy. Will not be voting until he is added.

Out of Dempsey, Pears and Ryder, probably Dempsey, love his running back with flight.

HULK HOGAN
17 Jun 2009, 20:02
Mcveigh for me, like the way he has matured as a player and leader, will be next captain of our great club.

Lack of Slattery in this pole is blasphemy. Will not be voting until he is added.I had to choose 19 (+ "other") based on how people speak of players on here. I'm happy to change options; for example, if Houli fails to poll, he'll be replaced with Slattery (or whoever else is suggested when "other" is voted for).

You may have underestiamted the Slattery love on this board, being persuaded by the vocal minority. Or it could just be me... I have voted other, but I wonder who the 2 other, 'other' votes were intended for.

Watson has been my favourite since he started (beside my all-time hero Hird, of course). I've just always enjoyed his game.
Ryder, Welsh, Fletcher and Winderlich round out my top 5.

Ryder has been mine for about a year. Rapt that he's playing in the ruck now:)

Also like Monfries, Lonergan, Pears, Hurley and Laycock but can't really think of anyone at all that I don't like. Also, I'll be very excited when Gumby gets over his injuries and establishes himself

Lucas has been my long-term favourite. Hope he can finish his career in good form:thumbsu:

Mine even though injured and can't stay on the park is Gumbleton just can't wait for him to show what he can do on the footy field

Watson, because he more than any other player just makes me gasp at some of the things he does with the ball. God-like hands in a pack, that kid.

Monfries, Zaharakis, Stanton, Hurley, Reimers, Lonergan, Winderlich, Pears and you expect me to choose one?

Monfries for me. :) just

Lovett. Majestic skill and relentless pace make for an undeniable combination.
Plus he's black, and black's cool.
Otherwise Jobe. Thus far, has made a career with very limited natural ability, and that's something to be noted in such a high paced, finely tuned modern game.

Dempsey is second however, I could name a looong list

It's been between Lloyd and Jason Johnson my whole life. I'll stick with Lloydy till he retired. Then might take on Lovett or Zaka.

Lloyd was my favourite after Hird, but now I think I've moved onto Lovett. Watson closing.

jobe watson for me. always had a soft spot ever since i saw that he looks EXACTLY like his old man (memories). will be future captain material for sure and i'll always cheer for him no matter what.

You are missing the Gary Moorcroft and Michael Prior options.

Only two players have made me go "f*** me he's a gun" since Hirdy and that is Jobe and D. Zaharakis. Jobe for now, but he is warming the seat. Honourable mentions to Sam Lonergan and Kyle Reimers purely for mancrush value.

Whilst I love these boys, I just can't go past Matthew Lloyd who so often has shown us why he belongs amongst the greats of this game.

Any man that can follow James Hird into captaincy, and make it his own is worthy of nothing but praise.

Anyone suprised?

I picked Houli. When Monfries was drafted it was him for a couple of years (I had the number on my back) but that has slowly gone. Is it just me or does anyone else notice that he dives a hell of a lot??
Tayte Pears really impressed me last year and he has continued on that path so he is getting up there, and I have always loved McVeigh.
I'm sticking with Houli, hopefully he can become one of our top five players.

Jobe for me. He's been my favourite since Hird retired. Although Paddy is very quickly catching up this year and I've had a man crush on Zaka since ANZAC day. (that's my birthday as well - best present ever!)

A close call between Watson and Dempsey, but I would have to say Dempsey. Stanton is still one of my favourite players, but has been surpassed by the above two players.

My top 3:

1. Reimers, love the way how he goes about his work, hard at it, no fear. Will be a superstar in the future.
2. Paddy Ryder, my previous favourite Essendon player was Dean Rioli (excluding James Hird) and he sorta reminds me of him, very smooth mover with silky skills, a great leap and has excellent defensive pressure for a big man, love his second and third efforts.
3. Tayte Pears, how can you not love him? Playing with the confidence of a 200 game players, takes the game on and will be playing for Essendon a long time.

Mentions to Jobe Watson, love the way he goes about his work and his determination to continually improve his game and David Hille, I've always had a soft spot for him because he sort of reminds me of myself!

Jobe snuck past Hille recently. Jobe=God

Knight Ryders
18 Jun 2009, 13:17
I've gone for Ryder with only a bee's dick in it between him and Lovett.

I have been really impressed with Ryder's improvement as a ruckmen and think that he can elevate his game to a whole new level over the next few years. I love Lovett's run and carry and his ability to dispose of the ball at full pace.

I would round out the top 5 with Windelich, Watson and Monfries (SA connection).

We should start a poll next week about who is the Bomber's barometer. A few mates and I always joke about who is the barometer of the Bomber's and I tend to change my mind every quarter.

Lovett for me.

He is really underrated & is a massive in for us week in, week out. He's a part of our gameplan & his ability to lift us whenever we need to be lifted by speeding up and down the midfield & kicking freak-ish goals from near & afar.

We don't perform as well without him.

So glad to have him back this week. Will tear Melbourne a new one. :thumbsu:

Watson.. then Davey... then Lloyd.

Watson just works so hard and is always good for us... Davey is amazing sometimes, you can't help but love him, his pressure in the forward line is fantastic too... Lloyd is just a lifetime favourate for me, always seems to amaze!

Couple of years ago we lost to Hawthorn at the 'G. Franklin was kicking them over his head from 50 out on the boundary. Nothing went our way all day.

6 or so goals down and deep into time on in the last quarter, i see this little fella still busting his guts trying to run down and tackle the opposition. I thought to myself "This bloke just refuses to quit". That's the guy i want in my team, Alwyn Davey.

Slattery has been added in place of Longergan, with the votes adjusted accordingly (Slattery +1, "other" -1).
To those that have voted "other", let me know who these are, as clearly nobody is voting Neagle.

I am the proud owner of a #37 Essendon jumper.

He is my number one. I do the Reimers' dance after the game when I'm at the pub (it includes the two arm salute).

Alwyn ! Love the way he lifts his teammates the crowd and how the opposistion set out each week to hurt him. Apologies to M.Lloyd.

ALLLLLLWYNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVEY

I got kicked out of CQ for screaming that out....granted I was drunk but it's become a tradition.

He is my number 3. Just wait until 2010. I'll be on SEN abusing David Schwarz and Bomber fans again.

My pure favorite is Lovett... No one can touch him - physically and metaphysically on the footy field.

A journalist said of Lovett with the ball recently ".. there is no better sight in football.." None - full stop. If he can get his mental landscape smoothed out in the next year or two he could be as good as Chris Judd.. Ask any current Essendon footballer who is the best player in the team skill wise ? The answer is almost always Lovett...

I think that Watson is the best player in the team and if he and Lovett can both continue there current trajectory through footballs outer space they can together take us to footballs goldern lands - the premiership heavens..

Go Dons !

I'll go Watson over Spike.

I have always loved McVeigh but I'm leaning towards Watson these days. Probably the best player in the league (probably fighting it out with Sam Mitchell) at extracting the ball from the packs. Beautiful set of hands and a fantastic work ethic.

i haven't really got a favourite...never have had one tbh

but theres just something about Tayte Pears that I've grown to like a lot recently.
Zaharakis is probably ranked about the same as Pears for mine, but I think the differnce is, Tayte hasn't the profile stories done on him and he hasn't got the rising star nom, but he still goes out there and makes an impact every game. Pears has an underdog element about him which I really enjoy.

Ricky Dyson is my favorite Essendon player. His kick from the boundary line in the Anzac day clutch moment put Essendon back in contention to win that game. Which then allowed Zaharakis to kick the match winner. Everyone just forgets that Dyson was the champ who set that scene up.

I voted Winders as he's been one of my favs for a good few years now. But really it's impossible to split Winders, Pears (huge man crush), Watson etc.

Got a lot of love for this club!

My favourite is Hurley. Too early to put him on the list, but he is probably the most talented footballer we have drafted this decade.

I also love the way that Lonergan and Reimers play. They are both so hard at the ball, so i voted for Reimers.

Adam McPhee. Despite the fact he's seen some lean times in the last couple of years I still remember just how good he is when at his best. Still think we are misusing him he should either be our loose man in defense or running of a wing and in the middle ALA Chadwick Cornes!
