Just starting the thread for the associated match. Who does everyone think will win? I'm tipping Geelong at Shell Stadium but I think it should be a tight game, no more than a 20 point margin.

The good news too is that it is being televisted live in WA. Almost makes up for the game not being played here http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I think the eagles might win. 9 new players named in the squad and all will want to prove themselves to avoid being dropped when phil Matera and Kemp come back.

Ealges by 13pts.

I thought a few interesting calls which im sure will be changed match day. Cousins in the centre not on the ball?? Prior on a wing?? Fletcher in a forward pocket??

A few interesting placements.

Jod, I can understand all of them(not saying they will stay but I see the logic). Cous in the centre as Kempy isn't in so he can give us the influence from there like kemp does. Michael Prior can play very well on the wing(My Dada said when we drafted him we should play him on a wing)and I'm a huge fan of the young Chad Fletcher and he will be a good fill in for ph.matera as the Eagles will do what they do with matera, put him on the ball for a few short stints but still have him being able to shark a few goals.

I'm tipping the Eagles by two goals

Someone said in another thread that the R1 game wasn't that important. I don't agree - it's vitally important that the team starts off with a bang and gets the confidence up in the young players - just look what a bit of confidence did for India in the cricket

Come on Sunday - I'm counting the sleeps until the game

Unfortunately - Geelong by 19 points.

If all 9 new players named actually do play, for the record I don't think they will, I think we'll have too many new players trying to find their feet in the team at the same time. Whilst they'll be keen, I don't think that will be enough.

Hope I'm wrong!

Logic says Geelong but my gut feel is with the Eagles. The Vic press has given the Eagles heaps so the cats just may not be hyped up enough. For the Eagles they want last seasons monkey off their backs quickly.
The team positions are unlikely. Prior is a half back, I predict Wirra will be forward, Fletch rotatin in midfield with Brauny and Merenda in a pocket. I can't see Carrol in a back pocket either.
What happened to Donners?

Good news for us - our record for Round 1 victories is 10-4, and I still have last years game against North Melbourne fresh in my mind http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/smile.gif Bring on the Cats!

I dont know about Cousins in the middle. I would have thought Braun would take that position and keep Cousins on the ball. Prior should definitely be in defence, thats where he is at his best. Fletcher in a forward pocket is alright even though he impressed me in the Ansett Cup by running with the ball and pushing forward to kick goals. Phil Matera will be missed and again the question is can we kick a winning score? Geelong by 24 points. But with my Eagles glasses on, West Coast by 1000 points!

I really want us to win but no matter what the result is at the end of the game as long as I know that the WCE have given their heart & soul and played positive footy then I'll be happy http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think you make a good point Broome.
I don't mind seeing a poor side that battles and plays with passion but the second half of last season was a spineless, bad attitude time typified by Gehrig's couldn't care the less attitude.
What I want to see most today is passion and commitment most of all.

ps and a win would be great too http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/smile.gif

Do you think this game today will give us a true indication on how WC will peform this year?

Visro, It's hard to say since it's only Round 1. I guess we can see which new players coming into the team fit into their new positions and which players can have an impact in the game. Remembering we lost by 85 points at Shell Stadium last year it won't be an easy task - so I'll give the club until about Round 4 or 5 to make a judgement.

They're giving a us a good old fashioned thrashing. The way we are playing at this very moment(riccardi just kicked a huge goal) it could blow out to One Hundred points.
A lot of work to be done if we want to miss the wooden spoon.

Oh Well, at least My team won, by 6 goals. And I started the season positively, kicking 3 goals 1 behind. Anyone else still play footy here?

Nah I dont kick goals, I score them http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/biggrin.gif In hockey you cant kicks goals, it usually ends in a free being awarded to the opposition.

Bloody woeful game, didn't play like a team, KJ has some serious work to do.

this is why i beleive in trading for low draft picks
on todays form, the older players just cant do it any more, the young squad isnt up there yet, or talented enough, our draftee kerr showed great promise,
based on todays performance its a matter of no1 pick or priority pick then no 1 pick

daddy_4_eyes

I don't think your comments are justifiable there ah_19. Prior, Taylor, Collica and Merenda all played well, certainly better than our 'stars' like Cousins, Braun, Wirrpunda and Roo.

A team needs balance, look at collingwood. A shitload of young players but too young to win them too many games. And in turn when they get older they will all retire within a few years of each other and thus leave the pies decimated. Kind of like what happened with the eagles. Too many retirements too close to each other.

I could write so much on where the eagles went wrong today but frankly I dont have time to do it and even if I did it would take me about 3 hours http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/mad.gif

Vis

PS. Couldn't resist, despite getting a walloping our defence has signs of promise in it. Prior, Collica and Taylor, the three new recruits all played "allright" but Jako looks pretty slow and Macca is getting a bit old. I really hope Darren Glass steps up a bit because we are really going to need him this year.

I didn't want to see that http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/frown.gif

At the start of last season we had a team that played super footy in round 1. By round 12 they were flat. In the second half of the season they played without passion, without commitment, did not support each other and were not hard at the ball. I put it down to injuries and fatigue.
Today we saw the injured return. We saw some good new individuals in Taylor, Merenda, Collica, Sierra (for a bit, Carrol and importantly Kerr.
But as a team they played without passion, without commitment, did not support each other and were not hard at the ball.
That is a worry and is down to management.
Why was Wirra left up front when clearly not in the game a needed in defence? We all know that our half forward line is our weak link. What happened to Donnelly?
I will accept defeat if the lads play as a team and show some grit but today was dreadful. If Judgey can't pull them together and motivate them..................

This loss is making it hard for me to do my homework, it was 100000000 times worse than my worst predictions, not the scoreline but the overall players attitude to the game!!

Not a good way to start 2001, although It's best to have a loss in Round 1 than in Round 22. Another positive was Daniel Kerr, he really stuck his hand up and showed a bit of promise in his first game.

But the downfall, where do we start! Jakovich looked VERY slow, McIntosh did some good things but was lagging behind his man at times, our defense seemed to collapse where they had the loose man in their forward 50 and some of our kick-ins were shocking! I felt we were really missing a Phil Read type player who could rebound the ball to the midfield.

Moving up forward, things were just as bad. Cummings got no support at all, he was outnumbered by 2 players at each marking attempt, they needed a crummer like Phil Matera to pick up the ones that went on deck.

I heard that Donnelly will be in strong consideration for Round 2, and I think bringing him in would be a very good move.

Hmmmm.

Well i will start with the positives or should i say positive. Daniel Kerr shows great promise and i can see him playing a lot of games this year.

Now to the bad. We had this discussion on this board about a fortnight ago .. Wirra forward or back. Well i think it is obvious where he should play now. I said he should stay back and that better be where he is come next sunday! He had no impact on the game whatsoever. Cousins only decided to start playing after half time, Cummings was the only one kicking goals, Jakovich was slow, injuries continued to flow, Half forward broke down again, and KJ should take the blame.

Everyone seemed to be playing in the wrong spots .. and the only players i thought that didnt lower there colours were McIntosh, Kerr, Cummings, Collica and Morrison. Everyone else got taught a lesson. But with all that said i dont think its is at all panic stations. This team hasnt played together with so many new guys, Kemp Embly and Matera are still to come into the side and im sure with a few more games we will start gelling a little better. Oh and KJ it helps to play ppl in there correct positions.
With Wirra in defense and Cousins on the ball instead of the middle will go a long way into sorting out the complete dissaray that we had to sit through.

Almost forgot, is it that hard to pick up your man, i dont think ive ever seen so many loose players in all my years.

Cheers.

Richard Taylor didn't play that bad a game I thought. However he does need to improve who he kicks it to. He has Mick Martyns attitude there, "Bomb it long and hope my team marks it http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/biggrin.gif"

Vis, i think we have a saboteur in Taylor!
With almost every kick he seemed to pinpoint a Geelong player??? Ah well at least he was trying.
