View Full Version : Alwyn Davey - Stealth Bomber

This guy does an immense amount of work and creates havoc with the opposition, but much of it doesn't show on the stats.

I note that few have acknowledged on our board Alwyn's invaluable contribution to our victory over Carlton. Doesn't matter, as he often goes under the radar.

I do note that The Age voted him 7 points with only Welsh more on 8 points.

Many here will already realise by now that Alwyn is my favourite Bomber by the number of times I have played his efforts on youtube.

Fully agree. While he perhaps hasn't reached the heights of 2007, he's slowly getting better. The past few weeks he has been outstanding with his forward pressure; I've had him in my votes, although he has escaped most others'.

Watching him at the ground helps you appreciate his efforts a lot more, too. Let's hope by finals time he'll be fully recovered from his knee reconstruction, ready to wreak havoc.

His pressure is 2nd to none. I love the fact that players still get run down when they know he's chasing them haha.

Umm yeah there are many people on our board that reckon he has been below average and not much better then Jetta. I personally reckon they are delusional. I didn't expect him to be this good first season back after his knee injury. This season is a bonus.

IMO his game against Carlton was equally as good as anything he has produced:thumbsu::thumbsu:

It was definitely his best game since his injury.

Pilfering the ball from Judd, running 40m at full pace in the 4th quarter to completely own Kade Simpson - he didn't get a huge amount of the ball, but every time he went near it you knew something was going to happen.

And when an opponent with the ball sees him in the corner of their eye they instantly know the pressure is on and can rush their disposal.

Such a valuable player.

It was his best game since the injury. I was one of the people that said he hasn't done much more then Jetta at the start of the year, but that was because he hadn't. Jetta has gone backwards a bit and Davey seems to be getting better every week.
I still doubt we'll see him back to his best until next year.

He was suspect there for a few weeks but his game against Carlton was spot on. No fumbling, made good decisions and finished well, the Davey we've all come to expect.

I love little Alwyn and he's almost convinced my Collingwood supporting girlfriend to cross over to the light side! Davey has been in good form over the last few weeks which is great to see. I had to laugh though when watching Andrew Welsh on Before The Game saying that Davey is "lazy" at training haha

I agree Friday's game was Davey's best this year. Here's to hoping he will continue to electrify as the year goes on.
During Woosha's interview on Before the Game on Saturday, he talked to about Davey's 'Aura' and how psyched out by him opposition teams are.

I think the loss of Davey was a major contributing factor Essendon started to slid mid last year. At the time he was the only one applying deffensive preassure. Had a bit of a shocker against Melbourne round before last though. Just needs to work on his consitency a little. Really starting to look good now he's fully match fit, and over those horific injuries.

Leigh Matthews made an interesting observation during the telecast on Friday night.

He thought that Davey's defensive pressure was so valuable even if he got no possessions.

Just wait till Alwyn loses a few pounds and his knee goes to 100%. Once he regains his speed, he will be terrifying. There was a thread about Ratten putting a tagger called Joseph on Alwyn. How do you put a tagger on this guy? nobody knows which way the guy is going to run until it's too late!

Agree. I was getting a bit annoyed with people who were critisizing him this year. I know alot is expected from him, but no other player returning from a knee reco has had so much expectation on him.
I think he is ahead of where he should be in his recovery, and he is getting better every week.

I don't have the technical know-how to show you where I read this, but I see that your board is also talking about it in "changes for the Magpies game" thread.

Just to add to this post of yours which I fully agree.

A knee reconstruction has several effects on a player: he can't run as fast, and loses maneuverability, the knee and associated muscles and ligaments take time to heal 100%, and the player needs time to recover and regain his confidence.

But I have noticed that Alwyn is regaining his fitness, and he never stops trying.

You will have to excuse me if I don't take yor word for it. Sorry. Below is a report from Nicks, which is one of my sources (you all will have to forgive the anti-Bomber jibes it contains, it's just our way at Collingwood:)):

Just back from Windy Hill from Bumblers training as I live so close to ground I thought I'd doing some snooping.

Must say I was generally underwhelmed by their session.

I know its very windy today but their skills by foot with no pressure were shocking.

Knights as opposed to MM takes almost all the drills with the Dons assistants doing SFA. Knights called them in numerous times.

I couldn't believe how handball focussed their training is compared to the Pies kicking style and most of the their training is very unaccountable with little to no pressure.

Alwyn Davey had a significant bandage on his right knee and favoured his right leg noticably and didn't take part in any of the running/match practice work.

He basically walked a lap then proceeded to be part of the numerous standing handball drills.

True or not, the overwhelming bias inherent in this report is going to make me completely disregard it.

'Training is unaccountable with very little pressure' - I have no idea what this even means in the context of a training session (it's just words, I think) but evidently your guy certainly didn't watch the Essendon-Carlton game.

Actually, he's proven a reliable source over a long period of time. (we're not all nuff nuffs in Black & White, despite what you might think).

Anyway, just posting it on your board to generate a bit of interest and to see if you guys had any info.

I'm convinced Alwyn wears an invisibility cloak during the game. He obviously had it on last Friday when he tackled Kade Simpson. :D

He's a star.

Kade Simpson would not see if Derek Kicket circa 2000, if he was coming to tackle him. Totally oblivious.:p
