M&M had a shocker last week but other than that he's had a good season. Bit rough.

Looks like there aren't too many making the journey. Still, should be a good game. Will post a few words if there is no match report posted after the Hawthorn game tomorrow night once home.

This might sound silly, but maybe M & M is playing 2's cause they play sunday. Is it possible that he can't play saturday? Maybe a wedding or something? Probably not, footy would have to come first at that level you'd think. Ok, ok, nothing to see here, forget i mentioned it....

Possibly a late change on the Hawks front? Player to come up from BH in which case MM to play? Club just cops the fine? Doubt that too. :D

From what I've heard Schoenmakers is the registered emergency, if there are no injuries he wont get to play for either team, just be at Etihad in case there's a late injury.

I haven’t seen a Box Hill game this year, but I always listen to it on 3wbc (when it works) and in every game Walsh has played he is called taking STRONG CONTESTED MARKS. Not just this year either it was the same last year.
Now the problem is that at the end of this season we have to either promote or delist both Stokes and Walsh, as it is their second season on the rookie list.
We have the option of giving all the other rookies another year.

Now listening on the net is obviously different to watching, so I can only go by what I hear on the radio and the helpful reports on BF.
But the one thing I have seen is Stokes play and IMO, I wouldn't even think about promoting him.

I see the questions on here asking the people who were at the Box Hill games if Walsh could play CHB.
I’d go the other way and say we need a bloke up forward who can take CONTESTED OR PACK MARKS in the goal square.
And now that Max is back (fingers crossed) it’d be prefect to see if Walsh can play goal square full forward.

Whatever the answer is we need to know before the end of the season what Walsh can do or he gets delisted because that’s the rules. We already know what Stokes can do.
With the draft being what it is this year and how young we already are I don’t see how where going to do better at the draft then giving this bloke a go.

Croad should be eligible for veteran status next season so there’s his spot and then with the rules the way they are we need to delist 3 other players and at the moment after reading some of the blogs throughout the Hawks broad it seems we can delist almost the whole list. So finding 3 spots on top of Croad maybe going veteran and promoting Walsh isn’t a problem, or is it if those people want to be sensible.

WE NEED A GOAL SQUARE FF WHO CAN TAKE PACK MARKS.

I posted most of this in last week’s game only for this thread to open up an hour later, so I haven’t got any responses from the people who see Box Hill live each week.

If anybody has the time some feedback would be great and I’m happy to be told I’ve got no idea about Walsh, as long as it’s from somebody who watches the Box Hill games live each week.

Slayer, I have seen Tim Walsh play in most of BH’s home games in the seconds and firsts. I was away all June so I can only base my opinion on the pre June games. Tim had a knee reconstruction in 2007 and he resumed playing in the seconds towards the end of last season. In his first game he impressed me because he read the fall of the ball well and took some strong contested marks. Since then I have followed his progress and was disappointed when he sustained an injury before the first NAB Cup match because based on his games at BH late last year and his preseason training I thought he would have been selected to support Simon Taylor.

My first thought was 198 cms is too short for a ruckman however Tim is reported to have a very good leap which I have been informed we have not seen due to him following medical advice to build up more strength in his legs before he starts jumping. This has restricted his ability to compete in the ruck however on occasions I have been happy with his body use and taps to advantage. A big plus for me is that he has shown he is prepared to protect his onballers by blocking and shepherding.

I do not see Tim as a key position backman because I think he lacks pace and struggles when he is required to change direction quickly. Given the fact that Tim has missed a lot of football due to injury, I think he has performed well and I am particularly impressed by his strong marking, reading of the play, preference to take front position and the way he uses his body. His kicking for goal has generally been good although sometimes he sprays the ball possibly due to fatigue.

walsh takes a great mark and generally is a good ruckman, however, he has no skills and cannot kick, which we need. esp given taylor can't move.

Haven't heard Shoenmakers or Whitecross called yet.

Bailey sounds like he is among it, commentators are happy with his game so far

8 points down and commentators say lucky to be that close

Morton just took a big mark from young's LONG KICK and goaled, 2 points down now.

Smithwick also playing, not sure if he was picked or not.

Getting ugly now.

1/2 Time

Box Hill - 5.5.32
Geelong - 11.6.72

Bailey mentioned as having done alright

Still waiting to confirm, but I think that all three box hill emergencies are playing, M & M, Smithwick, Curnow, and I haven't heard Shoenmakers or Whitecross called.

Shoenmakers, young and tuck were Hawthorns emergencies, both young and tuck are definately playing.

Shoenmakers may just be kept out as cover, maybe whitecross was injured?

Bailey was fantastic. BOG for BH for me (rotated with Walsh who also tried hard). Geelong were just too strong after 1/4 time and showed more poise around the contests and with disposal. Wind was tricky but Geelong made the most of it.

Turnovers from kickins cost us dearly in the 1st with 2 goals being gifted. General turnovers were too high to be able to apply scoreboard pressure consistantly.

Lord Mud of Glenferrie – Whilst Tim can take a strong contested one grab mark, I do not think he could play as a full forward because the majority of forward entries hit the ground and his lack of pace would be exposed. I believe our forward structure would be far better if we had players running in front of marking contests. Don’t get me going, apart from Cyril where are our spare players when Buddy and Roughie are double teamed and the ball spills to the front of the pack?
Does Tim show enough to be promoted? In my opinion yes because his potential upside is far greater than Simon Taylor’s likley improvement and we need know if he warrants being placed on the list at the end of the season. The performance of our ruckmen this year has been terrible however I will cut them some slack because the holding and pushing drills they were practicing at pre-season training were deemed illegal by the umpires. I think to loss of Alex Ishchenko as our ruck coach has been a major factor in our poor performance in centre clearances and immediate steps need to be taken to get him back in 2010.

Thanks for that - it certainly goes part of the way to explaining why our current ruckmen look like they're de-evolving as players before our eyes.

I have 2 questions for you:

1. Why did we get rid of Alex?

2. Bailey is being mooted as our great ruck saviour. Obviously those expectations are wildly optimistic, bordering on the self delusional in the short-term. (Like on the main board there are calls for him to be picked next week.) What path do you see him taking? And what are your thoughts on the eventual impact he could have?

Bailey won't have the match fitness for AFL in the short term. He looked great when he was used against Geelong so *touchwood* the body does the right thing this time. Might get a game in the last couple of rounds perhaps but I can't see him at AFL level atleast until he gets a few more games in for BH.

grizzlym, my guess is Alex left due to a dispute over his remuneration. :thumbsd: Correct me if I am wrong but I recall something about the football department having a 10% reduction in their budget. Given the competitive performance of our ruckmen last year, I hope we pursue Alex for 2010.

Re Max, given Musto played 2 reserves games [2 quarters & 3 quarters] and 2 senior games with BH, I think Max will play at least 3 games at BH before being promoted and it will be more for experience rather than seeing if he will make the grade. If the selectors decide to have a look at Tim Walsh Max’s promotion may be delayed. I witnessed Max’s first intra club practice match in 2006 and his taps to advantage, clean hands below his knees and timing for releasing the ball to advantage were so good I was laughing like a little boy at the prospects of our having drafted a sensational 206 cm ruckman. His opponent was Spider Everitt and he certainly didn’t like lowering his colors to a 19 year old recruit.

My ‘wildly optimistic’ prediction was that Max would be rated as one of the top three ruckmen in the AFL by the end of 2009. Provided Max’s two knee reconstructions have not impacted too much on his mobility and he can regain confidence in his body, I think Max will be our number one ruckman before the end of the 2010 season. He ability to take clean one grab marks, tap the ball to advantage and his terrific attitude should see him have a significant impact by 2012.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my questions HH. Moreover I appreciate the reasoned, realistic nature of your response. I haven't seen as many 'reserve' games as I'd like over the past 6 years due to the arrival of children, so it's great to get 'development' insights.

The quest for the devastating ruckman has been like the holy grail for Hawthorn since the Don slung his manbag over his shoulder and went off to breed horses. Don't get me wrong we've had good ruckmen since, but Don was the last dominating topliner we've had. I remember him (just).

Re ruckmen: my father always paid a keen interest in who we drafted and what their prospects might be. Good judge of giraffe that man. He liked Greg Dear; thought if Paul Harding was born 20 years earlier would have been an absolute champ; and genuinely rated Steven Lawrence on potential and a few games. But since the Don, no one got him salivating like big Maxy has.

He saw that intra club game and Bailey on a few other occasions too, and thought he could be anything. He says that he plays like he understands his height and knows innately what he needs to do. In short: a natural.

Anyway, thanks again and I've got my fingers crossed that his body can hold together - which if my mail is correct, there's no reason why it shouldn't.

Why though?

Max is massive to our long term plans, why risk it just because we are in some short term pain/problems.

Imagine if he got injured this weekend.... would that be something we could 'lose' by playing him too early?

I'd be thinking around a month at Box Hill, maybe more, and just a game or so (if the fitness staff say he's ready) and look to get a big pre-season in before next year.

I remember reading an article about Robert Pires, when he did his knee.

He believed the reason was because he was tired and his muscles, because they were tired didn't do what they were supposed to do. Because of this, he put his foot down on the wrong angle and his knee went.

I would hate to rush Max back before he was fit enough and have that happen to him. Flipside, it doesn't seem to make sense to me to have one ruckman on the ground for 90 minuts and the other for 30.

Give him another 2 - 3 games at BH and see how he goes.

All jokes aside, if the figure quoted as Alex's remuneration is correct that's a farce. When you've got extremely well paid players on 50 times that money a year you would think you'd be shoring up your investment, not trying to save your way to success. It just don't work.

It's like spending a bucket on making a crash hot tv ad and then not spending any money to air it.

Let's hope the situation improves next year.
