View Full Version : What do Australian cricketers have such problem being informed about drugs?

I found it rather amusing to hear Steve Waugh and Justin Langer today echo Warne's comments about taking no notice during all the innumerable drug hearings and booklets and talks they have been given over recent times. What is wrong with these people? How hard would it be to listen to some basic information about a vital part of the game on occasion.
If I was one of the people who gave those lectures and heard Warne, S. Waugh and Langer belittling it as they have, I would be insulted.

i agree. it is a nonsense that these professional athletes do not know the rules. the average mug off the street would know the rules, let alone these professional athletes.
although i feel it is probably the teammates duty to defend him when he is in this kind of trouble, i do think these comments are highly irresponsible. but would ponting, waugh etc. be doing anything other than coming to shane's defence?
I bet they're all listening at the next one!

They've probably dug out their booklets from the bottom of their closets. ;)

it's that old Australian bastion of never accepting responsibility for our own actions, and then even when we do, not being severely dealt with by the authorities.

Exactly we are first 2 criticise other athletes but always keen to listen to whatever our athletes spluter up mind you the media inparticular Mr Packer play there part as they no what the public want to hear. They want all of Warne's excuse's but wont accept any excuses from other athletes and when other non Aus athletes make excuses media commentators just say it's rubbish. Australia as far as Drug's in sport goes are the biggest hypocrites any other internal country sport and they people would be outed for the max, Australia however is the exception.

its interesting comparing the different newspapers in the shane warne story. the telegraph (which employs shane warne) has been far less critical of him, and some journo's even try to claim that it was all a big mistake. the SMH however has been tearing strips off him. today, the revelation that he took more than one tablet after he threatened legal action at them for suggesting it has provided them with plenty of ammo.
also that interview on channel 9 (another one of warne's employers) failed to ask any tough questions, and quite frankly, appeared as if the questions were rehearsed. ray martin should have asked why he didnt tell anybody about further pills at the initial press conference.... but anyway.

Yeah i saw the ch 9 interview what a croc of s%*t Ray Martin how sympathetic was he im suprissed i thought he was going to burst out crying, that was absoloutley pathetic and what a blood sham, i think he has well and truely gone for the sympathy vote from the public, interesting he has taken a while to play it.
Ray: so you're guilty of stupidity are you?
Shane: stupid's a harsh word Ray...
awwww, the poor little darling. stupid is a harsh word to describe what he did. cry me a bloody river.

Have you never found yourself at a meeting at work and discovered you weren't listening? Most people have. I work in an office building where they test the fire alarms so often I don't listen any more. Now if a fire breaks out I'm not sure I know what to do.
There was a classic line in the Blues Brothers where Jake asked Elwood how often the trains ran past his window. He said, "So often you won't notice them". If you keep passing on the same message, eventually people stop listening.
The point I'm making here is nobody is taking into account these guys are humans, just like us. They play cricket better than us, but there is a chance there's a lot of things we do better than them. Just because they are elite athletes, it doesn't make them any more or less intelligent.
Warne has made one hell of a mistake and now he is paying the price. I really don't understand why we are still talking about it.

How hard is it to comprehend that there's a 24-hour phone number to ring to check whether its OK to take the tablet you're considering digesting? Even some members of the public, not just Australian sportspeople, would be aware of this facility.
Even the jury hearing Warne's case found Warne's apparent lack of knowledge of drug codes hard to accept. Most likely, they thought that Warne was playing up his apparent stupidity as he would've reasoned it looks better to be a fool then a drug cheat.

Well wouldn't expect any different from a "hard-hitting" journo like RM. Perhaps now Warney has a bit of spare time RM will do one of his suckup chat specials on Shane Warne to show the public what a nice bloke he is ... or perhaps turn up on This Your Life with Mike Munro & they can both discuss what it is like to be left out in the wilderness... :)

I think its one of the most dissapointing things I have heard Steve Waugh say
For the captain of the side and the chief role model for kids to say he doesn't know such basic information is very poor form
I think he may not even be entirely truthful in an attempt to back up Warne
There is only so far you can go in backing up your mates when their actions are indefensible
This whole thing has made a complete fool out of Warne and not to a leser extent Warne and Langer.
I agree entirely with Partick Smith's article in today's Australian. There is a frist time for everything it seems.

"Why do Australian cricketers have such problems being informed about drugs?"
Let's see....
Most Australian cricketers have had nothing but their d|cks, stubbies and a cricket bat in their hands since the day they were born. Education? What do you mean?
They have trouble understanding somebody who is trying to teach them about prohibited drugs because most of them are DUMB IDIOTS.
It's true.
Their inability to listen to lectures about drugs is obviously a bad habit retained from when they were in high school, and all that mattered was getting to cricket practice as soon as class was over.
Perhaps those who were giving the drug talks were using too many big words, causing knobs like Warne to lose interest within 10secs.
I can just see the Australian Cricket Team sitting in "drugs" class......Warne was probably busy letting off a big fart when they were talking about diuretics.
Meatheads the lot of 'em.

I've never been to a session on drugs in sport and I know that you if you are an elite athlete you shouldn't put anything in your mouth without consulting the team doctor. I would assume 95% of the Australian public would be the same.
Warne would have sat through well over a dozen of these sessions and the overriding messages in each would have been "don't put anything in your mouth without talking to the doc", and "if you are not sure, check".
We now know that it was not a one off, not even a two time spur of the moment thing, he had a freakin' sheet of the tablets in South Africa at the World Cup.
As for Waugh, saying that he took a tablet of a passenger on a flight, he is either lying, or just as stupid as Warne. Very disappointing from a person I don't have a heap of time for, but I thought had a bit more common sense than that.

I'm sure the ACB is over the moon at the news that the Test Captain ignores the drug safety meetings, must also be a relief to the parents of those young players making their first tours under Stevie's stewardship....

mate, i think that was a panadol, as opposed to a prescription drug
So when they asked Langer for his opinion did he ring Steve first before he answered?. Those two are very close 'buddies' at the moment.

Fair enough, I am now slightly less disappointed in him. Still think any defence of the "ignorance excuse" by the Test captain is unacceptable.

FACT: Shane Warne handed a "sheet" of moduretics to physio Erroll Alcott after it was first announced he had returned a positive sample.
QUESTION: Why was he in posession of more of these pills whilst touring in South Africa?
