View Full Version : Matthew Hayden - The anchor?

Not sure if its a conscious effort, but it appears that Matthew Hayden is playing the Geoff Marsh type anchor role. That is, play conservative and thus try to bat the 50 overs out.
With our depth, i really don't see a need for an anchor at the top. Having Bevan coming in at 4-5 playing the anchor role is more then enough.
Anyone else noticed a chance in Hayden's approach?

He just seems to be struggling for a touch a bit to me. He has always been a bit of an anchor though. He doesn't really need to hit too many boundaries because we have Gilly and Ponting for that.

That's the other possible explanation for his rather reserved WC so far.

As soon as I said that, he started hitting 6 after 6.

The commentators were talking about Matthew Hayden being a little bit unsettled with the keeper standing up to the stumps, thus preventing him batting out of his crease and coming down the wicket. I think this has had some effect although Hayden will get his confidence back once he starts attacking the bowlers again in the later matches.
He just got bowled in this game for 88 off only 73 balls.
