Windies boycott series

West Indies Players Association president Dinanath Ramnarine has announced its members have withdrawn from the forthcoming series against Bangladesh due to an ongoing contractual dispute.

The WIPA has been locking horns with the West Indies Cricket Board for several months over players' contracts and the situation has reached a head with the month-long series scheduled to start on Thursday.

Bangladesh is due to play two Tests, three one-day internationals and a Twenty20 match in the Caribbean.

But Thursday's first Test is now in serious doubt following the statement from Ramnarine on Tuesday.

At a press conference at the Queen's Park Oval, Ramnarine's statement hit out at the WICB for its handling of players' retainer contracts, claiming the governing body has not delivered on its side of an agreement reached in 2007.

"The fact remains that the players have played their last four tournaments without a contract," he said.

"I repeat the players have played their last four series without a contract. They are now being asked to play their fifth consecutive series without a contract which is highly unacceptable.

"When a player called me last week and asked what was the position with regards to his injury while playing cricket for the West Indies in the just concluded Twenty20 World Cup, my response was that was there was no written contract in place and therefore any action that would have to be taken, would have to be taken in that context.

"Professional sportsmen should not be allowed to play any sport that has such a high risk without the necessary protection."

The WIPA and WICB met during the recent series with England where, the WIPA claims, agreement was reached on 'a number of issues, some of which were outstanding since 2007'.

As well as the issue of retainer contracts, the WIPA is claiming various match payments are outstanding and are in dispute over image rights.

The statement continued: "It is in this regard that WIPA met with the players in St Lucia on Saturday July 4 for almost three hours.

"The decision was taken that if the WICB did not meet with WIPA to resolve outstanding issues, the players would not make themselves available to participate in the upcoming series against Bangladesh. We have written to the WICB to meet on Monday July 6 and Tuesday July 7, but unfortunately the WICB have not responded.

"Having considered the situation carefully and dispassionately, and bearing in mind their own welfare without ignoring the concern of other stakeholders, the players have requested me as President of WIPA, the players' body, to inform the WICB, sponsors and the public that, regretfully, they cannot with immediate effect continue playing without any contracts with the WICB."

The WICB has yet to comment on the WIPA statement.

The first test is due to start tomorrow night at midnight AEST in Kingstown,St Vincent and the Grenadines.

West Indies have pulled out of playing Bangladesh because of a contract dispute with their national cricket officials two days before the start of a six-match home series.
West Indies Players Association president and chief executive Dinanath Ramnarine says the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) are reneging on agreements and haven't responded to requests for meetings on Monday and Tuesday.

"The players have played their last four series without a contract. They are now being asked to play their fifth consecutive series without a contract which is highly unacceptable," Ramnarine said.

"The players have requested me ... to inform the WICB, sponsors and the public that, regretfully, they cannot with immediate effect continue playing without any contracts with the WICB."

The players competed without contracts this year during England's tour, the return tour of England, the World Twenty20 and the just concluded visit by India.

Apparently going to field a second XI side. Sad state of affairs.

How the mighty have fallen.

I'd like to think this debacle is the absolute bottoming out of cricket in the West Indies, but I'm not in any way confident that it is :(

Have the West Indies ever played a series without some sort of contractual dispute in the last 10 years?

I think Ramnarine graduated from the Norm Gallagher School of Industrial Relations Dispute Resolution - when in doubt, strike!

This happened a couple of years back before a series against Sri Lanka - every senior player bar Chanderpaul boycotted the series - very sad that nothing has changed in the meantime.

No doubt the players get poorly paid compared to the likes of Australian and Indian players, but to boycott on the eve of the first day of a new series is surely not the way to get what you want.

The real losers are the West Indian cricket fans.

West Indies squad for the first Test Omar Phillips, Dale Richards, Floyd Reifer (capt), Travis Dowlin, Chadwick Walton (wk), Darren Sammy, Kemar Roach, Ryan Austin, Tino Best, Kevin McClean, Nelon Pascal, Andre Creary, Nikita Miller, Kraigg Brathwaite, David Bernard.

What a team!!

Their captain last played test cricket 10 years ago, and averages 7 from those four tests. Brathwaite is a 16 year old kid, who has played just 2 first class games.

At least Sammy gets another chance, and it'll be good to see Best back playing for the Windies. While both Pascal and Roach are promising young quicks.

Hopefully everything gets sorted out before the second test. It really is a shame, because it looked like West Indies cricket was finally getting back to where it should be.

Just another sorry episode in West Indies cricket, sad thing is no-one seems to care.

As a fan of test cricket we can't delude ourselves that Australia V England is going to be the series that "saves" test cricket. Boys growing up in Australia dream about playing in the Ashes, but what about boys growing up places like the West Indies and New Zealand and Pakistan?

Those countries don't have any "icon" series, and as such its easier to see why players will be attracted to the money of T20 over the supposed "prestige" of the test arena.

Pakistan is not in any trouble at all.
They love cricket and Pakistan vs India is a pretty big series over their, they are neighbours, they hatre each other and they are both cricket obsessed countries

If they go much further down this path, they'll lose test status.

Good chance for Bangladesh to get a series victory.

But, yeah - what a sad state of affairs for THE team of the 80's.

Needs to be sorted out ASAP or they'll sink to lows that will put them back decades!

Heres what I was thinking....

What's worse for the game here....

The fact the Windies are playing a bunch of no names, or the fact that Bangladesh will quite probably still lose the series?
