Below is an email I put together for my bomber mates most weeks, I'm interested to hear other views on what we need to do to get a win this weekend.

The Email:

Boys it’s time to stock up on the ginger lollies and put on our motion relief wristbands. It’s time to grow up and get over this travel sickness.

If we are to play finals in ’09, I see this as our biggest test yet, we are 1 and 5 interstate since Rd 1 2008, which makes us the proverbial push over out of the creature comforts of the G and Etihad stadium.

It is perceived that Sydney are on the way down while we are on the way up, however the Swans are 4 and 0 at the SCG in 2009 which on face value looks tough, but if you explore a little deeper the SCG isn’t exactly the Alamo. The only team they have smashed is Port and the other three wins there have been between 2 to 4 goals against relatively unimpressive foes.

I can only recall seeing the Swans play 4 times this year so I am interested in hearing anybodies view on how we can beat them. What I do recall is they have a tendency to overuse the footy around the packs and other than a few individual players the kicking efficiency isn’t flash but what they lack in quality they make up in shear grunt with big, powerful, experienced bodies around the football. A lot of people have been saying that we need to stop the Good Shaw and he has played very well at the SCG averaging 26 possies a game but it isn’t quite that easy as there are a number of Swans who’s numbers are up for home games.

If you analyze the raw numbers of the Swans win/loss for 2009 it’s relatively useless when trying to find a way to unlock the game plan. In wins they average 30 more possessions(kicks and handballs equally up) and 28 more marks than in losses however they averaging 15 more tackles and 6 more hit outs in the losses.

It gets a little more interesting when looking at the stats of the games at the SCG V their opponent’s stats. @ the SCG the Swans are averaging 38 more possessions than their opponents however the kicks are only up 3 per game while the handballs are up a mighty 34 per game over their opponent. This shows they are happy to flick it around and would rather control and run with the ball. This is where we need to attack the man and apply the type of pressure we did in the Hawthorn and 2nd Carlton game were locking the opponent up in close seemed to be the goal.

IMO when the footy is in our control we need to take BIG risks and run and carry to break the lines. We all know that CHF is almost non existent at the SCG so the further we can carry it and the deeper the forwards start the more dangerous we can be with our inside 50’s. The last two teams(Adelaide and Dogs in ’08) to beat the Swans at the SCG got big games out of their small forwards(Adelaide Porps kicked 5, Dogs Johno kicked 4) and had midfielders kicking goals(Goodwin kicked 2 in a low scoring game and Cooney kicked 5). So we need a big efforts from the likes of The Flash, The Bush Kangaroo and U’ve Been Reimered, plus Winder, Lovey and Stanton need to kick some goals.

My guess, if we win this we make the finals(I know an early call) and we show the football world We’re Coming.

Bombers by 5 goals(if Jobe plays)

I might be crazy or just a revolutionary...

But at the SCG - its a small ground so why not just play Fletch in the middle, and get him to kick goals from the centre square. It is still a fair kick - but he has a mighty kick on him...

Monfries might have been handy.

Our skill level and disposal must be on the ball otherwise we're gonna play the game into their hands and they'll smash us like the did last year.

Really hope Watson pulls up for this game.

I'm sorry to derail the thread, but...
Is there a reason, beyond the fact that 'Etihad' is an Arabic word, that you say Jihad here? I'm not one for censorship, so if there is another reason, whatever. But if there isn't another reason, it smacks of unhelpful xenophobia. Would you refer to the stadium in that way to Bachar Houli (Arabic being the official language of Lebanon)? Etihad is the Arabic abbreviation for United Arab Emirates. Just think about what you're saying. I'll probably be accused of being overly politically correct here, but this is 2009, and mindless, childish crap like that we should be getting past.

I didn't notice that the first time, so it has been fixed now.

No need for that ignorance.

The news doesn't sound good for Watson, doubt he'll be making the trip up.

I get the feeling that the damage he did to his ankle isn't terrible, but I think he is pretty much at the same stage he was a week ago - can run in straight lines, but off the line he is no good.

I have to apologize for that, it's a bit of an 'in' joke amongst the group that do the emails. It has nothing to do with making a joke at any race just something that was said during a game earlier this year that stuck. I had a quick read over the email before posting, changing some bits and pieces and overlooked that. Sorry to anybody offended.
