CWAFL Media Release

At a phone-conference meeting held on monday night
(10 March), the CWAFL member clubs voted by majority
to accept a new draw for the 2003 season.

There were significant concerns expressed by some
CWAFL members, that the last-minute withdrawal of
the Dubbo CSU Iguanas, and the ianbility of CSU
Bathurst to field a reserve grade side had impacted
seriously on the amount of Australian football that
would be played.

The rationale behind the new draw is the playing of
more games of football and consistent week in week
out football, two important factors for the growth
of Australian football in this region, particuarly
in junior grades.

CWAFL President Mick Sloan:
"There is no doubt that initially there will be
disruption as a result of the draw change, and the
CWAFL will be under pressure to be organised for
round 1, with the season proper now less than three
weeks away, but I believe that the changes were
necessary for the continued development of the game.
Juniors have been our number one priority for many
years now, and this decision was made in the best
interests of all Australian Rules footballers, but
in particular our junior players, who more than
anyone need regualr strong and viable competition.
As a result of the new draw, there will be more
games, less disruption, and more consistency.
Ultimately the new draw will lead to an improved
competition across all levels of Australian football
in the Central West".
