Can someone please tell me why New Zealand have been using daniel vettori as opener during this world cup??
Are they using him as a pinch hitter so they can get a flying start or is it for another reason??

He opened in 1 other game too. Made 20 odd didn't score that quickly. He's a Number 10, a good number 10 mind with a good defence & concentration.

Maybe the idea was to use a capable tail-ender like Vettori to see off the opening bowlers, so the full top & middle order would be batting against the change bowlers, and the part time medium pacers and spinners.

If you're 3 or 4 down after ten overs, with your top order back in the pavilion, chances are :
a) the fielding captain would be tempted to keep the successful bowlers on
b) you can't go full-bore on the attack because you'd be down to your last two specialist bats

Send in a tail-ender who can play defensively and puts a price on his wicket, see off at least some of the opening bowlers' spell, then let the proper batsmen go after Harvey, Hogg, Lehmann, Symonds, etc. with minimal risk.

Didn't work on this occasion, but at least Vettori got into double figures which is more than one can say for the bulk of the Kiwis...
