View Full Version : Positives from this Season

There's always room for finals next Season, and the seasons following.
We are at 8 wins with 4 games to go, and we'd probably have to beat the Saints to make the finals, which is highly unlikely. However, I hope in Round 22 we keep Hawthorn out of the finals :D
We never expected to make the finals anyway, so oh well. Carlton however, were expected to make the Top 4, which makes me chuckle.

Now I say we list the positives of this season (so far).
- Anzac Day
- Beating Hawthorn
- Beating Carlton, TWICE
- Pears becoming a promising defender

And the last thing I myself am hoping for this season would be to Beat St Kilda, whether or not that means we're in the finals, I just want to beat the Saints. Well and Hawthorn.

Leave reflecting to the end of the season. I'm still confident Port can choke and we'll make the finals on 11 wins.

Yeah, exactly. I'm over it now and we need to give some other people a game. Finish on 8 wins, it's all the same really...

What's the ****ing point of making a (shit) post like that moments after the game has finished if you know you're over-reacting? I swear I don't get (And don't want to) half the people on this board.

As for positives? There's a lot, lot, lot more positives than negatives.......

Copied the positives from andylespaul..

Now I say we list the positives of this season (so far).
- Anzac Day
- Beating Hawthorn
- Beating Carlton, TWICE
- Pears becoming a promising defender
will add;
- Ryder going into the ruck.
- PRISMALL :):):)

Made this thread cause i wanted to list a few negatives.

- Essendons loses to Richmond, North Melbourne & West Coast
- McPhee & McVeigh. Both are quality players just making us suffer.
- Lucas , feel sorry for the poor bugger. just did his knee. i wish him well in his farewell game.. (probable) in round 22.

A few neutrals would be;

- Our running game plan early on in the season, exciting to watch my god!
- Our captains season, not great, not bad. just ok :)

There is already a positives thread and about 10 negative threads.

Dyson: This time last year we were talking about his delistment. He has lifted brilliantly.

Dempsey: This time last year we were concerned if his body was up to it. Has handled it well this year.

Winderlich: As with Dempsey, concerns he'd be a goner this year with injury but has gone from strength to strength.

Ryder: Has gone from promising to delivering.

Zaharakis: Has shown some real solid development and skill.

Hurley: Is going to be awesome, we all can see it.

Pears: Has shown he is going to complement Hurley, the two of them are our future defense.

Watson: Has firmed into our future captain.

Lovett: From trade bait to star-midfielder. Massive lift.

Fletcher: Has still got it and will be back next year.

Hocking: Has shown a lot this year and come on much better than many would have predicted. Will be a solid player for years to come.

Thats a few to start with :thumbsu:

Negative: Lovett-Murray and Jetta are still on the list.
We lost to the inbreds
Our road record is poor
Our selection committee is shit

Positives: Jetta will be traded to Fremantle for a first round pick

Recruitment of a genuine classy player in Prismall.

Hocking - the guy is a bull and will be a great inside mid for us in the future.

Dyson - great ball user and is one of the few still taking players on.

Fletcher - star. Can definitely go on next year.

Pears/Hurley - Both play above their years. Natural development would see these guys being 200+ game defenders for us.:thumbsu:

Dempsey - he's looking tired because he's never played this much footy in his life. He'll definitely be better off for this year though - has taken over some matches in some quarters - I want him to do it more next year.

Ryder - self explanatory. Hille combo out of FP next year could be exciting.

Winderlich - awesome player. Glad he made it back at all.

Lovett - Top 2 player this year with Watson.

Watson - Next Captain - AFL elite.

Zaharakis - great first game and good impact in 1st year. Can't wait to see him over the next 2 years.

Slattery - seems to be still improving.

Hooker - I've really like what I've seen at times from this bloke. Could be an unbelievable CHB in the next few years if given the chance to develop in this role. He has great mobility and has gadget like arms.

Monfries - good improvement. Could be a lead up half forward instead of a small forward. He should be aiming for 50 goals next year. Very important player in the mix of our future forward line.

We still haven't seen much of Gumbleton or Myers. If they can show something next year to live up to their draft pick, I will be very excited. It could take Gumby half a year to get back into playing footy again.

Seeing as most seem to be concentrating on glowing reports on improving/improved/shining lights players in '09, I'll bare us all from reading a similar spiel and look at it in a different way..

- We haven't gone backwards on last year.
- We're closing the gap between our best and worst (believe it or not ) and imo we generally seem to at least be more competitive albeit understandably inconsistent.
- Despite the bullshit constant snide media mutterings and 'experts', be they fans or shit-stirrers, our personality cohesion as a club and team is fine.
- The playing group are taking more responsibility for their actions and what they expect of each other - on and off-field.
- The opposition knows the kind of fast flowing, free scoring football we're capable of when we're 'on'. Opposition fans hate to love the way we (can) play - but it's just simply such watchable football. That desire, that will of the rest to 'must-beat Essendon', is back on the right path and as strong as I've seen it for too many years. It's competitive. Any true Bomber should be eating that stuff right up.

Perhaps the changes in attitude, philosophies and standards are subtle, barely noticeable, but I see this season and the direction we're heading in as having been a massive positive.

Plus, at least it seems like a higher percentage of our supporters are willing to admit that our future is not all doom and gloom - although the latest (disappointing) losses have seen a few experts crawl out of the woodwork

Reimers has finally got back to playing footy after an interrupted season.
Welsh has gotten back this year, working into the groove (if it is up and down) when first fears may have had him out for the season.
Davey and Prizz (after mising a lot of footy courtesy of 'those' knees) have played a fair bit this season.
Winderlich is enjoying a season not ruined by injury and can only be getting better for it.
Hurley has missed a lot of football and preparation this year, but is still exciting so many.
All are players who have been exciting us/good to see them back, who will all be/should be much better (fingers crossed) physically and mentally prepared next season.

One of the bigger keys to frying bigger fish at the pointy end of the season is enjoying a strong summer, balanced, well drilled and consistently kept together team and minimal injury worries. There's much to look forward to in 2010. A lot. Even in the absolute devilish worst case scenario of going winless for the rest of the year..

Thought would go in number order
Ricky dyson - big positive
Jobe Watson - big improver
Jason Winderlich - big improver after horror injuries
Brent Prismall - Great recruit
Zaka - Great 1st season
Andrew Lovett - eventually shown what he can do
Courtney dempsey - shown what he can do when fit
Tate Pears - Great improvement
Michael Hurley - Great prospect
Cale Hooker - Big improvement and shown he can fill the void when necessary
Paddy Ryder - the next polly farmer

If we were actually gunning for finals then all bar St Kilda. But now the Knighter has given up on finals then it ain't gonna happen.

A good post Nuke - well thought out

Made me reconsider the futility of renewing membership for 2010. Our club has stuck together, there's no baying for blood after our consistent failures, and everybody's optimistic.

I've already bemoaned the pursuit of finals appearances when you can't be competitive. Hopefully Port or Hawthorn can give the series a proper shake. Otherwise, I'm happy to wait until Hille is back to his best.

My big positive this year has been the full leadership role McPhee has taken on. I know everybody else hates him, but he has absolutely played his guts out this year, and has plenty of respect from this corner, certainly more than Lucas or McVeigh have deserved.

Like we did with Myers, Stanton, Bradley or Gumbleton... You mean like Dyson...

1. Pears - I think we have all seen year 1 of a long and distinguished career.

2. Ryder - The arrival of Ryder, a genuine creative ruckman that can offer value over the ground. He will benefit from Hille coming back in and hopefully become a genuine ruckman/forward.

3. Lovett - His best year by a mile and has been our best and classiest outsider.

4. Winderlich - Has been a sensation both as a wingman and a forward. So very happy for him after the terrible injuries he has suffered (hopefully the latest back injury isnt serious).

5. Watson - Really stamped himself on the competition as a serious inside, clearence machine and has vastly improved his kicking.

6. Dyson - I have been pretty harsh on Rick but he has turned it around and been a good contributer this year.

7. Dempsey - Its great to see him play consistenly and he has provided some drive out of defence.

8. Hooker - Have really liked him down back and he has had a crack in the ruck, I like the way he moves and he's skills are quite good - big upside.

9. Slattery - I have been pretty harsh on Henry and he still frustrates me but he had improved in most facets of his game this year, actually becoming a decent shut down man.

10. Zaka/Hocking - Both showed plenty.
