Oh YES.

I abhor that song with a passion.

Apart from it being generally crap, the "bop bop" bits from Vanessa Carlton make me want to smash glass.

Poor old Joni Mitchell, how bad must she be going to allow her song to be butchered by that no-talent squawker.

I like Joni's version but I think Counting Crows' version is pretty good also. Could do without Vanessa Carlton though.

it was a good song to begin with.
but now it's just beyond a joke the radio stations playing it over and over like they do.

Talent?

Get rich and famous off one of your own damn songs. I hate it when hacks helps themselves to a piggyback ride on somebody else's success.

Well if you don't wanna hear it over and over again turning off the radio would be a start.

I think that is the bit that sends me crossing from annoyance into wanting to commit random acts of violence.

Damn muzak.

Waste of ecording studio time this song is, I am stunned that it is on play lists.. even more baffling is that people are buying it.

It was bad enough when Janet Jackson sampled the song a couple of years ago. But now its been butchered.

I bet Joni doesnt mind..with a cut of the profits going into her pockets. ;)

Sell out.

Can you actually stop someone from covering your material if they pay royalties?

I beleive that once a song is published you can do a cover, just have to pay up for it.

Well The Verve didn't make one cent out of "Bittersweet Symphony" as it all went to the Rolling Stones.

The violins used at the start of the song is actually sampled from "Can't Always Get What You Want ".

Counting Crows albumn actually has BYT as a hidden track, and does not include Vanessa Carlton's contribution.

Vanessa Carlton must be on the same record label as the Crows, and the powers that be decided she needed a profile lift, so added her screeching at a later date. This is also obvious from the video clip, where is seems Adam Duritz has never spoken to Vanessa Carlton in his life. It looked like she had been pasted into the clip as well.

For the record, I think the Crows only version is good. Vanessa can **** off, and it is hardly the bands fault the record company flog it off and we hear it too much.

Pornstar, I think it is a little rich to call the Counting Crows "hacks" and "piggybacking' off others success. The Counting Crows have had plenty of success and sales in ther own right.

They're an extrememly talented ban which is what makes their decision to release a cover so disappointing. Although having said that, Pearl Jam have covered "Throw Your Arms Around Me" which would be awesome, but I'm pretty sure it's never been released.

Back to CC - I've got all their albums, and they make some great music. Listen to August and Everything After - not one bad track on the whole album.

Vanessa Carlton is the US answer to Vanessa Amorosi, and that's scary.

Hard Candy has been re-released and BYT is no longer a hidden track, and it does feature VC, whereas the first release was the CC by themselves.

That's how I understand it. However if you want to change it in anyway you need the original writers permission.(eg: Boomtown Rats and "Under my thumb".
Also as I understand If you want to use a song as part of a movie soundtrack or an ad you have to get permission first as well. You can't just use it then pay royalities

PS- The Counting Crows suck.

was at the local Irish pub last Sunday - an early St Paddys pint or 4. Band playing there did a version of BYT. Yarned to them afterwards about doing Joni covers - they'd never heard of her!!!

Yes and no. ronan keating wanted to cover Oasis' 'Cigarrettes and Alcohol' only to be laughed at then told to '**** off'.

IIRC Artists can get away from paying royalties by playing it at a concert.

Why do bands and singers murder old songs these days.
Can't they use there brains and write there own songs.
I agree they have killed it over and over again. Spare us.

The reason why I say that is because I remember the fallout from Rolf Harris' cover of Stairway to Heaven, even Plant was ****ed off. Rolf's reply was "well if you don't want a song covered, then don't publish it".

LL is right about soundtracks, much of Kevin Smith's budget for Clerks was actually used for music rights.

I don't understand why people actually buy these covered songs. This particular cover is not a good example because a male is covering a female but a lot of covers sound very much the same as the original.
It's almost like you are buying the same song twice.

In this case though I didn't mind the original but the latest version I find very off putting. Not sure why but I it just annoys me. Sounds all wrong.

A very easy way to make a quick buck. Take a good song and copy it almost identical but jazz it up a bit so it doesn't sound dated.

Having said all that I don't mind hearing covered songs live. For example Pearl Jam doing a Neil Young song or Nirvana doing a Leadbelly song. It's more a sign of respect rather then ripping off a good song to make a quick buck.

I think the problem here is it was a pretty bad song to start with, Counting Crows version is probably better but am sick to death of it. As for the Counting Crows, Mr Jones was a great song but not much else has been of any real interest.
