who would be in favour of a pura cup competition (or an ING cup competition) where the north and south islands of NZ were also included?

How about reinstating the Canberra Comets and perhaps even introducing a Northern Territory XI before we start thinking about giving the kiwis a further leg up against Australia? These two areas (NT in particular) hardly have representation in any national sporting league, apart from the NRL and it would serve to further establish the game in regional areas.

NT aren't in the NRL.

But would they be competitive? I have major doubts that they would - I'd prefer to stick with the 6 teams we've got.

NT (population somewhere around 150,000 I think) vs NSW (pop. somewhere around 7million)... doesn't sound fair. Sorta like Australia vs Namibia. Or worse, Australia vs England...;)

Tasmania isn't exactly large in that respect either, yet can knock off sides in the Shield/Pura Cup, so I don't see how population would be a barrier for the NT. Perhaps it is only sponsorship where they would be at a disadvantage (apart from the obvious lack of participants of course).

BTW, I was referring to the Canberra Raiders in the NRL being the only representation for the ACT, with the Cannons NBL franchise moving to NZ next season I believe.

That would presumably raise the level of play in NZ, something I don't think the ACB would be too keen on.

Australia has the highest standard of first-class cricket in the world. the experiment with the Canberra Comets failed as the ACB decided the talent pool was not deep enough to maintain the level they wanted and did not want Australia to follow the example of English county cricket.

I also see no reason why we should bring in two sides from New Zealand. This is just plain stupid and should be tthrown in the bin with other stupid suggestion made by various people.

I'm no meteorologist, but wouldn't a summer of cricket fall right in the NT's rainy season ... be a bugger to maintain a decent pitch up that way in mid-January.

yes, hence why their season is during our winter!

very good point. it often baffles me when people say we should increase the number of teams purely so we've got more talent coming through playing at a first class level. sure, if you want that level only slightly better than a 1st grade standard.

Nah, don't see the point. Pura Cup games are always going to be about as popular as rats milk, so I don't think the ACB should be increasing costs by adding an international element. It makes a big enough loss as it is.

Maybe the ING Cup could have 2 or 3 NZ teams added though.

i would LOVE to see this scenario happen.

whoever wins the pura cup final gets to play an australian XI, which comprises of all available players outside the winning state. (players on test duty would not necessarily be eligible).

it's just that i'd like to see the likes of Slater, Clarke, M.Waugh, S.Waugh, Katich, Bevan, Lee, Macgill and McGrath take on the best of the rest. be interesting to see the bookies odds for that 4-day match.

Of Tasmania's 21 First Class players this season, only 9 are native Tasmanians. The rest are almost all fringe players from other states who have relocated to Tasmania to further their prospects of playing at this level.

I don't reckon a state/territory with a third of Tassie's population, and quite spread out at that, could field a side anywhere near competitively.

Im all for some NZ teams being added, infact, I would also like to see a few SA teams added so we would have like a Rugby Union Super 12 situation. That would definetly create more interest in the first class level here.

I would rather see us doing something about the plight Kenya are in rather than worrying about NZ sides. It makes me feel sick at the stomach after rading the "Herald Sun" article this morning. One of the brightest young stars of the future in World Cricket, Leg spinner Collins Obuya looks like turning his back on cricket to pursue a medical career because of the pittance he recieves playing for his country FFS !!!!! It looks like the major problem is that because they are not recognized as a test playing nation ( a joke) they cant get a team sponsor, why cant we organize for them to play in the Pura Cup (without them costing a cent) getting the ACB and ICC to foot the bill, at the same time organizing scholarships at the academy. Everyone keeps saying we should help the opposition. Well instead of subsidising the mistakes of England, West Indies etc. Lets help a nation that needs (and deserves) it

More likely Kenya getting a run in the South African league, Australia should be assisting nations in the region like PNG and the Pacific Islands.

I agree 100%. Why bring them in to our competition? They are more than competitive enough on their own.

What about a team from FNQ, based at Bundy Rum Stadium (A Test Venue now).

Bring back the Comets I say, at least for the Domestic One Day Comp. The loss of the Comets hurt ACT cricket, and just saw the two or three class players they had go to an already powerful NSW side. I reckon we should look at getting a couple more teams in to the Sheffield Shield comp (what?...got milk?...no!)

i reckon there is more passion when your state is playing. it is less so if your state is divided into north and south.

i would hate to see NZ teams in the comp.
