View Full Version : TV 30 Rock - Decent but ****ing overrated

apollo_creed

While 30 Rock is decent and reasonably funny (at best). It certainly isn't intelligently written, witty, hilarious or anywhere near worthy the accolades and awards it receives.

You'll struggle to find a more overrated show going around today.

While I'd **** Tina Fey until my dick fell off, her writing talent doesn't equate to her ****ability level.

I agree it's mildly amusing but that's it. Agree about Tina Fey as well.

Many rate The Office (US) highly as well but I don't find it funny at all. Some light chuckles here and there but it's mostly meh.

I didn't say I hated the show. I said it was decent.

It's nothing more than that.

Honestly, compare 30 Rock to Curb Your Enthusiam. One is intelligently written, provocative and innovative. The other is 30 Rock.

30 Rock isn't too different to Family Guy. Except nowhere near as funny. Their flashbacks are obvious rip offs.

My point is that it's nominated for a ridiculous number of awards and it just isn't that funny or good.

The writing is average. Very average.

Almost like it's put together by an 8 year old.

I don't hate the show but it's B-Grade. Obviously so.

Completely agree Appollo!

I think the number of awards speaks to the dearth of good comedies more than anything. I mean, what else is out there?
Two and a Half Men? Recent seasons are just terrible.
Weeds? fallen away to the point I can't watch anymore.
The Office hasn't been The Office since they've dumbed it down.
How I Met Your Mother? great at first but got stale very quickly.
I don't count Family Guy. It's just something I watch when I'm blazed.

I don't get the Tina Fey thing. She's got that quirky, nerdy thing going for her, but she's not very attractive in my eyes.

Alec Baldwin deserves his award though. He delivers his lines like few can.

What was your opinion on Season 3? I thought it was average at best, like a 5/10.

matt_897
8 Aug 2009, 18:16
Compared to most of the other crap there is out there, this is the best show in the universe. I admit the show can have it's generally lame episodes at times but some are comedy gold. Tell me what show is funnier? I'd admit i haven't seen enough of Curb to comment.

8 Aug 2009, 18:17
I think it's one of the better comedies in recent years, rate it highly over other efforts - rules of engagement, two and a half men, big bang theory, the office - there's not much competition :p.

It pales in comparison with the likes of Cheers, Frasier, Seinfeld, Curbed etc.

I also agree, i thought season 3 was the worst of the lot... started off good, but fizzled out towards the end.

I'd still do Tina Fey, i know someone who could be a dead ringer for her... if she wore glasses more often i'd...... :p

She doesn't have a 'cutting sense of humour'.

The jokes in 30 Rock are relayed for an early teenage audience.

It's not great, but it's worth a watch.

Better than most crap you'll see on television these days. I watched the pilot just after it aired in the US, and didn't take to it too much (I really only watched it for Tina Fey, who I had a crush on since SNL, I see I'm not alone in that).

I bought the season one DVD, and didn't touch it for like two years. This isn't uncommon, as it usually takes me a while to get around to things. (I'm doing the same with Mad Men at the moment). But, I watched it a while back and promptly got season two.

I don't buy into the whole "it's not as great as Curb or Arrested Development or Seinfeld or The Office" etc. etc. argument. That being the case, it doesn't mean it isn't watchable, not in the least. While I wholeheartedly disagree with the awards it has won (sans Baldwin, who is just quality), it's not a bad show by any stretch of the imagination.

Ain't that the truth. I packed that in after watching the first episode of this season, struggled through last season. Really couldn't be bothered any more.

Not too disappointed though, replaced Weeds with Hung.

Yeah I agree, 30 Rock is massively overrated. Baldwin is funny, but other than that I don't really get any laughs from the show.

Arrested Development is great and underrated in terms of viewer numbers but overrated by its fans. To say its easily the best show in the last 20 years is silly.

Agree with everybody re; Baldwin. he's brilliant in the show.

the dude who plays the nbc assistant (I forgot what his job is called) isn't too bad.

the receptionist is ****ing sweet to look at. as is fey.

apart from those mentioned there's not much.

I've seen Season 1 and most of Season 2.

the guest actors who I found to be good were Liz's horrible boyfriend and the mega gay executive guy who wants to bone kenneth.

the rest of the characters? no thanks.

the writing? average.

I dont generally watch dramas or crime shows, so if you go comedy only I would only have Simpsons seasons 1-10(or so), Blackadder and Fawlty Towers and the last two are debateable. MontyPythons Flying Circus was supurb but had alot of 'miss' sketches and The Young Ones was also a good show but not near the level of AD.

OP is way off.

30 Rock is full of the best one-liners since the Simpsons.

Maybe because there's no laugh track people don't know what's supposed to be funny.

"He bit Dakota Fanning in the Face"
"Yeah, but if you hear his side of the story she was kinda asking for it"

"Me and my wife like to play rape"

"We're lovers"
"Wow, the only time I like to hear that word is when it's between "meat" and "pizza""

"Thank you Jack Donaghy! I'm going to make you a mixtape. You like Phil Collins?"
"I've got two ears and a heart don't I?"

"I love you so much I'm going to take you behind the middle school and get you pregnant."

"He called me the name that rhymes with the name of your favourite Todd Rundgren album"
"It rhymes with Hermit of Mink Hollow?"

Shit, I love this show.

Yeah 30 Rock doesn't strike me as anything special, just another of the many 'run of the mill' US sitcoms around. It's maybe slightly better than the average crap they churn out like Two and a Half Men, but hardly groundbreaking stuff worthy of all the awards and acclaim it has got.

For me it's Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm equal first then daylight second. Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy are all up there too but as animated shows they probably belong in a different category.

Oh and that's another thing - come up with your own ideas Tina Fey!

Her saying the wrong thing to black people routine is exactly the same as Larry David's in Curb Your Enthusiam and LD's came first. It's the most obvious plagarism you're ever likely to see.

It's a shame that people don't enjoy this show. It might just .. I don't know. Not appeal to certain people? The writing is superb, and so is the acting. Tina Fey is probably the least funny of the main characters, with Jack 1st and Tracey 2nd. It's not overrated, it's genuinely good. If you're in the minority who dislike it, hey that's fine. Just don't call it overrated because you personally don't get it. For reference, I love Arrested Development, Scrubs, Seinfeld, Curb, Office, Extras, Larry Sanders and comedy in general.

Incredibly quotable and I laughed out loud at some posted in this thread. It's odd, all the criticisms found here are just.. I just disagree. There's no way to prove that this is a good show or a bad one, because all you can say is 'I like it' or 'I dislike it', or 'It's poorly written' or 'It's well-written'.

This is the exact reason why it was cancelled. People watch it sporadically, watching two or three episodes from random points in the show, and without the ability to understand any of the long standing jokes they can it.

On topic, 30 Rock is decent, I enjoy it when I'm hungover on Sunday's and when I'm just lazing around, but it probably is a tad overrated. Still I have no qualms with it, and if this became the expected standard for comedy's in the States I would be pretty stoked.

Damn. I love this show and have seen the first 2 seasons at least 4 times now. I don't get why the OP thinks its poorly written? I thought that the writing is pretty sharp and the episodes are really well-structured and move along at a good pace. And I think its aimed at a higher level of comedy than other current comedies ie pitched more at the viewers of AD, Curb and Its Alway Sunny etc., rather than According to Jim and How I Met Your Mother etc.

My one main gripe is the actress that plays all the bit parts (the cat lady, the maid on the boat, Liz Taylor, the thing that freaks out Tracy etc). She annoys the crap out of me.

As everyone in this thread seems to agree, Alec Baldwin is freaking hilarious.

And my favourite minor character is Dr Spaceman. The first time he came on, I thought he was going to be an annoying character, but I have never failed to laugh stupidly in every scene he is in.

That's Rachel Dratch.

Coincidentally, she and Tina Fey left SNL at the same time to do '30 Rock', with Fey writing and starring, but Dratch was to play the Jenna Maroney character (the Liz/Jenna dynamic is based on the Fey/Dratch friendship apparently).

The pilot episode (which is floating around), reflects this (no Jane Krakowski) but the network wanted Dratch out for the season itself... which is why she got relegated to the bit parts.

I'm a 30 Rock fan but I don't find Kenneth funny at all.

Been watching some of this on TV1 the last couple of weeks, (showing season 1 atm) someone said it gets better. Well I would hope so. I generally get 2 really laugh out loud moments, then the rest of the time is just nothing. Not seeing what all the fuss is about so far.

"Thank you Jack Donaghy! I'm going to make you a mixtape. You like Phil Collins?"
"I've got two ears and a heart don't I?"

I laughed (Was on last night's episode).

It really isn't funny.

It's one of those shows which never is really genuinely funny but to compensate this fans will say 'it's intelligently written'. it's actualyl written with crayons by baboons if you look beyond the character acting of alec baldwin.

Compared to Eastbound and Down this show is written by members of Mensa.

So it's decent, but it's nowhere near as funny as Family Guy (which sucks), it isn't funny or good, it's very average and an 8 year old could have put it together.

I'm not defending it, but why bother saying it's decent when you quite clearly don't think it's decent based on this post.

Just watched series one.

Starts off slow. Hated the first few eps. Eventually comes good.

Alec Baldwin the obvious standout. Who knew he was so funny?

Overall: no classic but pretty solid.

Of the other shows mentioned in this thread...

Curb series 6 is very tired. Entourage series 5 is a stinker. Jumps the shark late in that run. Family Guy is painfully unfunny (though I did like Blue Harvest).

Arrested Development is arguably the best TV comedy this decade. Really hope that don't make that movie. Not sure where they can go with it. Or how it will translate on the big screen...

He's been a regular guest on SNL for years and was always very funny on that show, he was actually funnier than the majority of the cast members. I imagine that's the reason Tina Fey roped him into doing 30 Rock.

30 Rock has some good moments but it seems it is quite happy to travel along in second gear. I am quite happy watching it but it only has a minimal amount of witty gags.

Another thing that annoys me is that they are not willing to change the formula at all. Other than Tracey coming into the show early nothing has really happened. It is just like 2 and a half men where the only way you can tell the difference between series is the age of the kid. Compare this to higher quality sitcoms such as Curb, Peep Show, Arrested Development, The Office etc. which have all had plot progression to a certain extent and you can see the difference in writing quality.

Are you serious? Never genuinely funny you say - don't know what you've been watching but I've been doubled over laughing hard at this show plenty of times. It is a rare show - intelligently written and genuinely funny.

I like it, but it's a little overrated. Very watchable though.

Still, no way it should have trumped Weeds in the Emmys (can't remember which categories) which, IMO, is far far superior.

Ive only seen the first season, and after the first 4-5 episodes it starts to find itself and does become pretty funny. Its not the funniest show ive seen, but its quirky and usually brings a chuckle or two an episode.

So anyone that finds 30 Rock intelligently written and genuinely funny loves Twilight? That doesn't even make any sense at all ...... aaaaahhhhh, you were making a joke. Oh. I'm so sorry you speak poorly of my comedic perception.

Its a decent show, it isnt in the upper echelon of comedy (Arrested Development) but it is well above the dross (two and a half men). Cant stand Kenneth or Jenna and Tracey isnt particularly funny, but Tina and Jack are hilarious and Pete is pretty funny as well
