Kenya call for test status from 2005

By Manoah Esipisu

JOHANNESBURG, March 14, 2003 (Reuters)

Kenya announced on Friday they would press for test status from 2005 after their team reached the semi-finals of the cricket World Cup.

Sharad Ghai, a senior Kenya Cricket Association (KCA) official, told reporters: "We will be asking that we be admitted to test status from 2005. We do not want to rush, and we will use the time to put together the required infrastructure."

Ghai said KCA officials would make their case at an International Cricket Council (ICC) executive board meeting in Johannesburg coinciding with the end of the World Cup.

Ghai said the sport in Kenya was crying out for funding but that would not be possible without test status. Kenya's team did not even have an official sponsor at the World Cup.

Bangladesh were the last team to be awarded test status three years ago. They have not won a single test match and not won a one-dayer since 1999.

Kenya beat Bangladesh in the first round of the World Cup, as well as beating test sides Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe to become the first non-test nation to reach the last four of the tournament.

Test status, however, is not just based on results but on good venues and competitive domestic competitions.

Ghai, reflecting on Bangladesh's problems at the top level, said Kenya were prepared to be patient.

He added that the Kenyan board had decided that the team's World Cup winnings, currently standing at around $500,000, would be shared exclusively among the 15-man squad -- $33,333 per player, a fortune in the East African country.

The Kenya Cricket Association, he said, would not make any money from the tournament.

"We will be left out of pocket," Ghai said, adding Kenya would press the ICC for compensation because of New Zealand's decision to forfeit their first-round World Cup match in Nairobi. The New Zealanders cited security concerns following a suicide bombing in Mombasa in November which killed 16 people.

The New Zealand forfeit gave Kenya four free points which helped them to qualify for the second round.

Ghai, however, said: "They gave our country a bad name and the effects will linger for some time."

Given bangladesh has it, I'd say fair enough

Better solution might be to demote Bangladesh to ODI's only, and Promote Kenya to ODI's for a few years and develop that side of things better. Both these teams would be dead meat in a test match at this stage.

Kenya already has ODI status. I think they actually have a favourable win-loss record against the Bangladeshis.

I think they'd do ok at Test level. They wouldn't be successful for some time, but neither were Sri Lanka or Zimbabwe.

I think Kenya would go alriiiiight for a few years, probably getting one or two victories over a Bangladesh or a Zimbabwe until they start to be big improvers.

It's also good to see that they're not just jumping in head on like Bangladesh without any real first class structure set up. I hope the ICC sets them up or South Africa invites them to join there domestic game.

I would like to see bangladesh win a few test matches first. have they broken there duck yet?

2005-2007 - in that period Kenya should probably be admitted.

not even close. their test record stands at an appaling 0 - 1 - 16

they once drew against zimbabwe after the last 2 days were washed out and they were 3 down in the second innings needing another 200 to make zimbabwe bat again. they have never even come close to looking like pulling off a win.

And Australia went plenty of years without threatening a win at the Winter Olympics ... but were perfectly entitled to compete.

Kenya have done very well in the World Cup. I think they'd be entitled to ask.

What's one got to do with the other? Bangladesh are a joke, even Canada cleaned them up. Surely their performance should have nothing to do with whether or not Kenya are good enough to gain test status.

I agree with you Rob. Kenya do deserve their Test status before Bangladesh, and this decision by the ICC is a joke.

Bangladesh are a decade away from TS. Time to take it away from them and give Kenya a go. They deserve it after all.

I believe it is 6 wins, 1 loss in Kenya's favour. Nuff said!

Bloody oath they should ask !!

They have been the surprise packet of the tournament and provided some entertaining antics when they take a wicket. I'm all for more countries being given Test-playing status if they are up to it.

From the way they have played in this tournament and the fact that their officials don't want it straight away, I'd say they are going to be a worthwhile addition to the roster.

Huh?

My point being, we were perfectly entitled to compete despite not really threatening the Winter superpowers like the US, USSR, Germany, Austria etc..

Just trying to draw an analogy on Kenya's right to compete on an international cricket level.
