View Full Version : Australia could (hopefully) lose their aura

CrazyQ

Australia stand to lose substantially more than their aura over the next month. An Ashes series defeat would precipitate a stunning fall from grace by relegating Ricky Ponting's men to fourth place on the ICC Test ladder behind South Africa, Sri Lanka and India. A drawn series will place them second after Graeme Smith's men.

A few things:

1) This article has been around for a few days; why bring it up now?

2) You're stating the obvious - any team shorn of the services of McGrath/Warne/Hayden, etc. would lose some of their aura. In some cases, however, aura means hype. Brett Lee has a definite aura - it's just that he hasn't really earnt it.

3) South Africa went through something like this before, only they lost about three or four players over a two year period, rather than seven or so (Cullinan, Rhodes, Donald, Kirsten and to an extent Pollock). What happened? They went down the tubes for a few years.</p>

Australia arent as good as some people think, South Africa are the best team in the world at the moment.

That's my point, it will happen.

We know we're not the best team in the world, but geez we are still number one and have been a top side for an extended period of time. We even beat the supposed best team in South Africa at their home ground after they beat us at our home. Just goes to show how good we still are. We are still top 2 in the world with South Africa.

Why is it South African's are always trying to convince everyone how good they are?

According to your OP if we win at the Oval we will be  So what's your point?

Australia & South Africa are neck and neck for the best side in the world.

We are currently the #1 side in the World though, aren't we?

You underestimate Australia's ability to rise again and again, losing good/great players to retirement only uncovers other gems hidden in Australia's cricketing goldfields.

CrazyQ

Yes, Hauritz is clearly a gem.

Mate, we beat Sth Africa in Sth Africa in a series no-one thought we would win, me included.
Ozzie number 1, and will be when we beat the Poms in London !!http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif

Well it's certainly not south Africa because we beat you losers. We lose near 3/4 of our team with retirement and still beat you while rebuilding.

You can go now. Your side is obviously useless.

CrazyQ
10 Aug 2009, 21:29
We beat you guys here, you beat us there. That's great.

You have won 5 out of the last 14 or so tests.

That's shocking and not a ranked 1 team.

In my opinion there is no clear number 1 in test cricket right now which is reflected in the rankings.

based on one test next week Australia could stay 1 or fall as far as fourth that's a pretty good sign that nobody is going to dominate the top spot for the next few years.

And yet again if we win next week the official stats, the same stats you want to use to prove South Africa are number one if we don't, will say we are.

So again, what's your point? Stop contradicting yourself.

I agree quite a weird thread.

Come on here saying we aren't number one blah blah then gives us a table and says we still are if we win at the oval?

Puzzling troll attempt.

There is no Test Championship - the points situation is rubbish. No one plays test matches for Ranking Points. It is made up for sponsors.

If you want to be the best in the world, you have to beat the best in the world. Preferably on their home ground. I would also accept beating them on your home ground and then drawing on theirs.

So SA were the best in the world after beating us in Aus last year - and then we took it back. If the Poms beat us here, they can be No 1 if no one beats them between now and the next Ashes in Aus and they either beat us or draw.

given that the weather in the UK is crap most of the time a drawn game is more often than not on the cards. thus making the stats you talk of irrelevant.................................................. ............................

4 of 6 Series wins, 7th Series pending versus 4-1-1(draw) including TWO series against Bangladesh.

South Africa are a great side at the moment no doubt, but to rubbish Australia like that is a wee bit silly!

Well, if we got to play Bangladesh and Zimbabwe a lot, like South Africa do and have, we'd be miles and miles out in front.

Just need a draw now.

Then the right team will be 1.

Feel sorry for the Saffer. He knows his mob has (and always will) crumble when presented with the opportunity, so he has to pray another country does the work for them. They've had a couple of chances to pinch the top ranking themselves. New Year's test? ****ed it up. Home series against Australia? ****ed it up. It's the South African way.

I thought a draw would make us lose the number #1 spot. ;)

And according to those rankings provided by CJ, we play 5 less games and are still ahead of you.

Interestingly, you could be the number 1 team NOW if you were good enough to beat us in South Africa. You weren't though.

So, in order to take the number 1 spot from us you need to rely on us drawing with England? What a hollow victory for you guys.

Although, South African cricket has always been about hollow victories.

Pretty sad that South Africa has to rely on somebody else to become number 1, they had the chance earlier this year but got pumped by the best team in the world when it was on the line in the first two tests in South Africa
