View Full Version : Steyn fails dope test.
[
Johannesburg – Dale Steyn, South Africa and the world's No 1 fast bowler, has tested positive for a banned substance and is facing a hefty fine or even suspension.
A urine sample taken from Steyn during the Indian Premier League (IPL), exceeded the allowed level for morphine after taken too many painkillers.
Due to injury, Steyn could only play in three of the Bangalore Royal Challengers' matches in the tournament.
However, Proteas team doctor and member of Cricket South Africa's medical committee, Dr Mohammad Moosajee, believes the 26-year-old fast bowler should get off.
"Dale presumably took too much Myprodol after struggling badly with migraines over the past few months and he also broke his left thumb during the IPL," said Moosajee.
He added that Myprodol and codeine (the substance contained in the painkiller) are not listed as banned substances by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
According to Dr Pieter van der Merwe, head of the South African laboratory where testing takes place for banned substances, codeine is turned into morphine by the body and a very high dose could lead to a positive test.
Moosajee confirmed that Steyn's morphine levels were tested at 1.3 microgram per millimetre, slightly over the allowed level of 1.0.
The International Cricket Board earlier confirmed the result of the test, but refused to reveal the name of the player involved.
"The Royal Challengers medical team were informed of the painkillers and we have already sent a detailed report to the IPL in which we explained the reasons for the use of it," said Moosajee. "We expect to get feedback within the next few days and are confident that there will be no action taken against Dale."

Doesn't sound to serious on face value, would hate to the best bowler going around banned for a lengthy period of time because he took slightly to many painkillers.
So he basically took too many Panadeine before an IPL game?
Pffft... big deal.
Worthy of a fine maybe, but not a suspension.
Are pain killers a banned substance?
A very marginal case and so should be thrown out

Can you not read?

Masking agent?
Considering you can take these anyway (just in smaller doses) I doubt that very much.

Non-story. All fast bowlers at that level would've been on a lot of pain killers many times

I feared the worse when I read it. He didn't seem like that kind of fella.
Anyway, broken thumbs are worse than your average finger break, so there's no real story here.

Thank Christ, I read that and thought he'd been on the gear; would've been shattered if he was.

None that would be taken orally.
Both would be on the needle at The Oval.

Lol, coming from someone who wanted Warne hung for taking a diuretic. If it was Brett Lee you'd want him horsewhipped and then jailed. It's hard to take anything you say serious as you can't comment without your childish biases and hatreds.

I love this bit of spin, its actually 30% over the allowable limit Doc!

Yeah, Warne was caught taking a steroid masking agent after miraculously overcoming a seriously shoulder injury in record time prior to a WC.
Steyn took too many Panadeine... of course they are the same thing.
Are you really that stupid? You must be if you bought that whole "my mother gave it to me cos I looked fat" bullshit.
Got a big problem with Lee being in the test team, have for years as he is crap, but if he had taken too many Panadeine I'd have the same view as I do with Steyn.
Your post clearly demonstrates who is childish.

yep, hopefully common sense prevails and a fine is given and a warning.
it would be ovious to most that he hasn't tried to cheat or anything like that. why would he need to anyway?? he proved well before the IPL that he is the number 1 quick bowler in the world at the moment.

You're the one buying the whole "I took too many Panadeine" line.

So you are disputing this?
You may find life more illuminating if you open your other eye every now and then.
They either axe him or this specific drug rule, you can't just say 'sure you failed a doping test but don't worry it doesn't really matter'.
Why is he the only 'injured' player who has been pinged for this? Surely if it is so innocent it must happen all the time? No doubt all fast bowlers take pain medication at some stage but do they all test positive 30% over the allowable limit?
I bet if an Aussie tested positive to this during the Ashes the shit would hit the fan in a big way, we'd be accused of winning through drug cheating and not playing in the spirit of the game and all that shit.

So there's a prescribed limit to how much of this substance you can have in your system, he has exceeded that limit, but everyone is falling all over themselves to find an excuse for him? And there is to be no questioning of the excuse he has offered for how the levels got so high? We just accept it? So then why is the limit in place at all?
I mean, I'm not surprised he got off, it fits in well with every other positive test the subcontinent have ever had.
If you really believe Steyn knew he was taking illegal substances, you then have no doubt Warne was a drug cheat.

I don't know if he knew or not, I'm just surprised at how everybody is so keen to find a way to let him off the hook.

No doubt you'd be ramming it home to us if it was Clarke or Johnson in the same situation, up on your high horse telling us how Australians are all filthy drug cheats. Your opinion here is so irrelevant.

I never call Australian players filthy, it's too personal. If this was any player, be it from the Aussie team or from India, I'd say the same thing. If you think Steyn knew it, then Warne definitely did it.
By the way, I've got no idea who you are and I would probably never respond to you again or care what you think.
You are actually very lucky I am responding. So bow.

People can relate to taking pain killers, it's likely something they've had to do sometime in their life and think nothing of it. If you contrast that to taking steroids you're entering foreign territory for most people which allows them to get all frothy around the mouth about unfair advantages and cast judgement from their high horse.
Both are performance enhancing, one just sits a lot easier on the conscience of the average punter.
