Australia rocked by Martyn finger injury
PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa, March 17 , 2003 (Reuters)
Damien Martyn
Australia suffered a blow on Monday when specialist batsman Damien Martyn was ruled out of the World Cup semi-final against Sri Lanka with a fractured finger.
Coach John Buchanan said: "He's out of tomorrow's game and he will be reviewed in the next couple of days, depending on the side's progress."
The number four batsman hurt his right index finger while fielding in the five-wicket win against Kenya on Saturday in Durban. The fracture was revealed after an X-ray on Monday.
Australia have already lost leg spinner Shane Warne (failed drugs test) and fast bowler Jason Gillespie (heel injury) from their World Cup squad, while fellow paceman Shane Watson pulled out just before the event with an injured back.
The 31-year-old Martyn, a key part of the Australian top order, has made three half-centuries in seven World Cup innings, at 47 runs a visit. He averages 40.62 in 122 one-day internationals and more than 46 in tests.
Jimmy Maher is the only specialist reserve batsman in the squad -- he is also the back-up wicketkeeper -- but he has only played two Cup games, averaging 17.5.
Australia, who have won 15 one-dayers in a row, could instead choose to play two all rounders, Andrew Symonds and Ian Harvey, against Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankans were the last side to beat Australia in a one-dayer, in Sydney in January, but have lost four of their last five meetings, including a World Cup Super Six match in Centurion on March 7.

Good luck to whoever gets to play in the side.
Bevan will come back into the side. He missed the last game with a back strain. Harves and Symonds will both play.

I'd say, throw in Bevan, chuck out Havery and bring in Hauritz since it's meant to be a slow bowler's paradise.

If the Aussies go on to win this world cup it will be a fair effort without Warne, Gillespie and now this. Martyn hasn't been in blistering form, but he's an experienced hand and that counts.
I've got a bad feeling about tonight!!
bloody dissapointing. The poor bloke looks like hes going to miss the final too, which im sure was something hes dreamt of playing in all his life. Another lifeline extended to Ian Harvey, lets hope he can grab it with both hands.

God damn those half japanese girls....
They do it to me every time
The red head said she shred the chelo
But I'm shallow baby...
I'm glad Martyn is out! All he is good for is appealling anyway so if he has a sore finger he is no use to us.
According to todays Hun it's a fracture & even the final is in doubt.
Our tail suddenly looks a bit long...

I'm not overly fussed by Martyn's loss. Obviously its not ideal, but realistically, Jimmy Maher is a perfect replacement should we need the extra batsman come the final.

Not only that, but he looks like missing the First Test of the Windies tour.

Who would you leave out? Harvey. 5 of our top 6 would be left handers. Is that a concern?
