Zimbabwean Charles Coventry hit 194* today vs Bangladesh, netting 2 runs off the final ball of the innings to equal the record set by Anwar 12 years ago

He jumps ahead of Saeed because of the not out. Shit, I can't imagine anyone in the world would have predicted the next person to better Anwar's score would be Charles ****ing Coventry.

I still think had Sachin not hurt his back in the ODI against New Zealand earlier this year, he would have cracked 200. He was looking that good.

Bangladesh was missing three first choice bowlers and we've also just chased down 312 with two overs to spare, with Tamim making 155. Tells you all you need to know about the pitch.

It was a fine knock but I'm glad he's only equalled the record instead of breaking it.

Before this his highest score was 74.

heh

Imagine a Zimbabwean holding this record, boggles the mind.

Could understand it back when they had some real promise, but yeah it is semi-hillarious for someone from the current side to do it (even though it is probably the strongest side they've had on the park in years).

Yeah there's some very handy players in this line-up.

If politics hadn't intervened in the last five years and decent white players like Taylor, Williams and Coventry had all managed 50-70 more games of experience, they'd certainly cause problems for the quality sides.

The bowling's still awful though.

What the hell was Utseya thinking taking two when the bloke down the other end is on the verge of cracking 200?

Good knock, but a bit sad the record wasn't broken against a proper attack.

They're generally not seaming green tops in ODI's let alone when blokes are posting 100's. Give the bloke some credit, he scored 62% of the total when the next highest score on his team was 37. I'd rather see someone like that have the highest score because you don't have to be the best player in the world to have a day out. Regardless the attack, then records like that should be broken every time "quality" opposition play a minnow.

Good on the lad and happy for him to achieve something like this, but Anwar's innings would still have to be miles ahead in terms of quality. I watched that innings and he was just simply unstoppable, Coventry would have to play very very very well to even come close to tthat

Coventry is awesome, played for the United Services a couple of years ago, kept hitting sixes over the railway bridge behind the ground

Adam Gilchrist was unlucky not to break this record-against Zimbabwe in Hobart a few years back. Out on 172 in the 41st or 42nd over IIRC?

Gibbs made 175 and was only in the 32nd over. Could've easily made over 230 and maybe 250.

the Zimbabwe attack were bowling some serious pies, i remember gilly lofting 2 sixes in a row into the crowd in the same over.

The other one was Gilchrist was out for 149 after 30 overs in the 07 world cup final, if it had been a full game he would have gone close no doubt.

No doubt the closest one was Dhoni's 183* in a run chase. After 46 overs http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/223634.html he was 183 not out - a certainty for 200 if the run chase had been bigger

Gibbs in that 438 game was ridiculous.

Yeah Dhoni's innings annouced him as a player and it was great particularly since it was a run chase. Although since he took over the captaincy he has had to taper his approach as a [;ayer due to the responsibilities of being captain (not to mention his hair cut once he became captain).
