Pak sack Waqar, Wasim, Inzi and Shoaib for Sharjah event
By A Special Correspondent
Islamabad, March 20, 2003
The Pakistan selectors wielded the axe with gusto, sacking World Cup captain Waqar Younis, his long-time pace partner Wasim Akram, pace sensation Shoaib Akhtar and star batsman Inzamam Ul Haq from the squad to take part in the Sharjah Cup tournament in UAE from April 1-10.
Rashid Latif had already been named as the captain while middle order batsman Yosuf Youhana was selected as his deputy in the 116-strong team chosen, a release from the Pakistan Cricket Board said.
Also placed on the sidelines from Pakistan's failed World Cup campaign were Shahid Afridi, Saeed Anwar and Azhar Mehmood.
The axing of the aging stars was on the cards following Pakistan's exit from the World Cup after the preliminary stage itself.
The new-look team:
Taufeeq Umer, Mohammad Hafeez, Saleem Elahi, Misbah-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana (vice-captain), Younis Khan, Naved Latif, Faisal Iqbal, Rashid Latif (wicketkeeper) (captain), Abdul Razzaq, Naved-ul-Hasan, Shoaib Malik, Mohamamd Sami, Umar Gul, Danish Kaneria and Mohammad Zahid
Coach: Javed Miandad
Manager: Haroon Rashid
Dr Tauseef Razzak (trainer/physiotherapist) and Dr Riaz Ahmad (doctor) will also accompany the team.
Sharjah Cup schedule:
April 1 Sri Lanka v South Africa
April 2 Rest Day
April 3 Pakistan v South Africa
April 4 Pakistan v Sri Lanka
April 5 Rest Day
April 6 Pakistan v South Africa
April 7 Sri Lanka v South Africa
April 8 Pakistan v Sri Lanka
April 9 Rest Day
April 10 Final

Hmmm, bit suprised Inzi and Shoaib were sacked? Big call by the Pakistan selectors. They were probably trying to send the message that the players need to be 100% committed to be in the side.

Not really surprised with what's going on with them that Inzi, there x captain and Afridi were sacked but Shoaib and Wasim i was actually very impressed by them both and were the shining lights apart from that opener fellow.

Surely your not suprise that Inzi got dumped. He only made about 16 runs in the WC.
Afridi has been suspended by Pakistan for swearing at the Indians players and the umpire in that game at the WC.
Didn't Wasim Akram announce that he would retire after the World Cup? I also thought he was probably their best player for the tournament.

I think he was too, but I suppose if you're going to start rebuilding there's no point in including an ageing ex captain.

I think it is ridiculous for the Paki selectors to suggest Waqar, Wasim, Shoaib and Inzi are not amongst the Pakis best one hundred and sixteen players. I also think the squad itself is far too large. They must have a rotation policy that puts our old model to shame.;)

It's Pakistani cricket - can anyone correctly name the incumbents of the Pakistani captaincy in chronological order? And Sharjah is the Dapto dogs of cricket.
Those guys will be back.

The Pakistan Cricket Board is a joke.

Pakastani selectors are schizophrenics! Wasim, Shoab & Waqar are clearly their best pacemen. Has a sacked Pakastani captain ever played the next test for his country? They seem to get the complete arse most of the time. Anwar is their most dangerous batsman & was coming into some form later in the cup. Inzi had a poor cup, but he was apparantly ****ed off with the board for not allowing his family to be with him (they usually tour with him). Very inexperienced squad. Perhaps they are trying to get Graeme Smith's captaincy off to a good start.

Yeah he had a shocker of a tournament but I still think he is a very good player. Maybe the weight loss made him lose his balance or something.

I dont think getting into a fist fight with ur teammates over a soccer match will do much to secure ur spot after a poor series either.

I was under the impression Akram was going to retire after the world cup and Waqar Younis was contemplating retirement too.
Seems Pakistan are looking at a youth policy and investing in players that will be around for the 2007 World Cup.

Waqar said a few days ago that he wouldn't be retiring.

Must have decided that he has a few more beamers left in his belly.
