Now, get set for the ICC Cricketer of the Year

The International Cricket Council is seriously thinking of nominating its very own International Cricketer of the Year. Talking to CricketNext.com, the ICC Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Speed said, “This concept is very much at the back of our mind and we would be discussing it at our two-day Executive Committee meeting in Johannesburg which gets under way tomorrow.”
The ICC has been toying with this idea for a long time and it will be along the lines of FIFA, the governing body in soccer, which gives out the world famous Golden Boot Award to the most outstanding player of the year.
“We have been working on this concept for some time now and we expect to make an announcement later in the year,” said Speed. Other things that will come up for discussion at the ICC meet will be Kenya’s application for Test status and Bangladesh’s poor run in cricket.
“We will try out ways to help Bangladesh improve. It is the duty of everyone to help the young nations in their development in cricket,” said ICC President Malcolm Gray, “I won’t be able to tell you exactly what we would be doing in connection with Bangladesh. But every Board will come together and try to find a solution.”
Gray and Speed applauded Kenya’s showing in the ICC World Cup 2003. “They have been the surprise packet in this tourney and it’s good for cricket. They have surprised everyone with their play here and made the tourney exciting,” said the ICC Big Boss. Speed, however, added the ICC won’t be in a hurry to hand out Test status to one and all as it wants the standard of cricket to go up all the time.
Gray said he was extremely pleased with the way the ICC World Cup has shaped up. “The tournament has been a tremendous success. The television ratings have gone through the roof and everyone, right from the organizing committee to volunteers have been wonderful. Commercially, it has exceeded our expectations by double. In my opinion, this World Cup has been the biggest to be staged so far and it has been a tremendous success,” he said.
Speed remarked half jokingly that the ICC was already being criticized for something that is yet to be finalized. “We have not yet planned the format of the 2007 World Cup to be played in the West Indies and we are already being criticized for that,” he said. He, however, admitted the ICC would be looking at the duration of the tourney as they have received feedback that this World Cup is too long

Now this is a good idea. It's better than that Wisden crap they do every year where they throw in an Englishman no matter what.
