After seeing Inglourious BAsterds i'd just like to ask the question to BF of what is the best movie of 2009 so far. Due to the fact that I thought Inglourious Basterds failed to live up to the hype (although it was solid) what are the best movies of 2009 when taking into account factors like hype? (I know strage thing to measure)
My vote so far has to go to Two Lovers (great cast, suberb performance by Joaquin Phoenix and just a great direction (as always) by Gray)
The Hangover was good as well (had absolutely no expectations for this movie and the whole vibe created was cool ala roadtrip to vegas gone bad seeing some new face in a film is also good as well) Sunshine Cleaning also good (love Emily Blunt)
Keep in mind I missed seeing Watchmen and Adventureland heard those 2 were good and yet to catch District 9. i also have a feeling i'll have to updated my preferences soon to accomodate The Hurt Locker (love a good war flick) and 500 days of Summer (saw that preview in the cinemas the other day looks funny)
Anyway i'd like to hear your nominations so I can see the movie, rent the DVD or IQ it in the future!
Rather than go with the "Pick the most obscure movie and call it great" usual - I'm just going to say Star Trek.

Still have to see some of the big name flicks but Adventureland would be the best ive seen so far.

District 9. Then Star Trek.
The Class would probably be my favourite thus far.

District 9. Then Star Trek.
This.
I think 2009 has seen a few Blockbusters go bust.
But I have liked these movies
District 9
Star trek
Sunshine Cleaning
The Hurt Locker
Taken
Fanboys
Watchmen
Benjamin Button
Drag me to hell
The unborn - not the best movie, but I didn't mind it.
Haven't seen Inglorius Basterds yet and there are a few promising releases coming so let's hope it ends with a bang
I just watched Gran Torino so not sure if that was 2009...
If it was then that.
Inglourious Basterds. Scorsese's Shutter Island may top it..but it's not out yet. Hurt Locker, In The Loop and Gomorrah close by not quite. Were all excellent but I still preferred Basterds.
District 9, Star Trek and The Hangover were all quality movies but not the best of the year.

Gran Torino was 2008.

i've only seen one movie this year (not for lack of wanting, just lack of money) so that gets my vote

Best comedy by an absolute mile is I love you man, heaps funnier then The Hangover, which would have been very average if not for Allen

Drag me to hell, on the other hand, was sensational!!!
Just watched The Hurt Locker. Renner is very good as Will James. Better than Inglorious Basterds.
I hear 'Nine' is supposed to be quite good.
Need to watch District 9 and Public Enemies next.

Haven't seen Two Lovers or Adventureland, so can't comment on those. Wouldn't put The Watchmen or Inglourious Basterds at the very top. Have also seen Balibo, Van Diemens Land, Moon and Antichrist which will all get releases later this year. I was underwhelmed by Moon, and Antichrist was, well, an interesting and shocking experience (brilliant epilogue).
Best Aussie film is the horror The Loved Ones (http://www.madman.com.au/actions/catalogue.do?releaseId=12340&method=view&webChannelId=8) which will be released in February next year.
Loved The Hangover, District 9 and In The Loop, enjoyed The Hurt Locker, Sunshine Cleaning was ok.
I saw 44 films at the recent Melbourne Film Festival and Tyson was on my list but I needed a sleep-in and I missed it. But my best film of the year so far has to be Bronson.
It won Best Film at the Sydney Film Festival in June this year.

Hardly. While not the greatest movie ever, for some well made Horror it is done reasonably well. But this is all about opinion, not facts. So I respect that you didn't like it. Each to their own I say.
Bronson on the other hand, that was shite in my opinion.

Safe to say however that Bronson is much much better than The Unborn.
The Unborn is pulling a LOLful 12% on RT.
Big Deal, I like plenty of films that were never that popular with masses. Who gives a shit. I am not forcing you to watch it. I never said The Unborn was the greatest horror ever. Probably would only give it a 5/10. But I didn't mind it when I seen it. So sue me, or STFU.

Don't know if I could do an accurate top 10 as 6-10 doesn't have any obvious ones, plus I failed to see some of what are apparently the better movies for the year.
But I'll go:
1. Inglourious Basterds - Just watched it on Blu-Ray again then and that bar scene is quite possibly my favourite scene in any movie. Christoph Waltz better win an Oscar for his performance.
2. District 9 - Had no idea wtf this movie was going to be like based on the trailer, and my impression didn't change after the first 30 minutes, but by the end of it I wanted more and totally got sucked in by the movie.
3. Avatar - Thought it was a fairly awesome movie, and probably the most epic of the year in terms of effects. Definitely recommend you see it in 3D and will probably go see this again at the movies.
4. Star Trek - Not a Trekky by any stretch of the imagination, but really enjoyed this movie. Awesome casting, and has a good balance of action, sci-fi, and comedy. Can't wait for the next instalment.
5. Paranormal Activity - A lot of people say it is boring etc. but I'm a big horror fan and this is probably the best horror movie I've seen this decade. Totally sucked me in and took me on the ride, which is why I didn't find it boring at all.
6. I Love You, Man - I think this is by far the funniest movie of this year and much better than The Hangover (which personally I felt was too similar to Dude, Where's My Car). Paul Rudd is funny in any movie but he's just hilarious in this.
7. Drag Me To Hell - Again, because I'm a horror fan, thought this was very well crafted. A fair simple plot, and not really original, but still very enjoyable and albeit not a spectacular twist at the end, but an effective one.
8. The Hangover - Didn't think it was funny as some people thought, but still found it funny and enjoyed it. But without Alan this movie is just your standard comedy.
That's probably about all I can rank as I am yet to see a few like Up or Where The Wild Things Are.
For the worst, easily Halloween 2 (**** you Rob Zombie), quickly followed by Transformers 2.

Inglorious Basterds easily for me.
Samson and Delilah, but for something less esoteric then it's got to be Up.
I hate Inglourious Basterds with a passion. Really enjoyed the first chapter, but after that the storyline was incoherent rubbish deliberately designed to stretch a 100 minute film into something twice that long. The plot was one-dimensional, everything overdialogued and the whole film was packed full of typically smug an self-mastabatory Tarantinoisms. To top it off Melanie Laurent was awful and completely ruined the one storyline with any semblance of depth to it.
Would have been a perfectly fine film if it wasn't completely overhyped and then stupidly overrated as the latest cinema masterpiece.

Samson and Delilah was the winner for me. Absolutely brilliant film.
Star Trek and Adventureland take the minor places.
1. District 9
2. Invictus
3. Sunshine Cleaning
4. Star Trek
5. Avatar
6. I love you, man
7. Balibo
8. Watchmen
9. Drag Me To Hell
10. The Hurt Locker

Inglourious Basterds is my pick for best movie of 2009. District 9 and Star Trek round off the placings.
All excellent movies.

It's been such a weak year for films that I wouldn't be surprised if Inglorious Basterds picks up a few Oscars. Will surely get a Best Picture nom since they're nominating, what, nine or so this year? Something absurd like that.

Off the top of my head..
Avatar
District 9
I Love You, Man
Adventureland
I thought Inglourious Basterds failed to live up to the hype (although it was solid)
Just watched it. I agree. Far, far too long, for a start.
Mine:
1. Watchmen
2. District 9
3. Avatar
4. The Damned United
5. Moon
6. Where the Wild Things Are
7. Adventureland
8. The Hurt Locker
9. Up
10. Inglourious Basterds
Runner up: Precious (misses out because it tries too hard) & Zombieland (misses out because it's too short).

I was of this opinion, but the year is finishing off very strongly and if you look hard enough there are quite a few great 09 films.
On top of my list above there's Coraline, Invictus, A Serious Man, Zombieland, 500 Days of Summer and more. That said no serious Oscar standouts as you say.

You failed to see it?
You failed to see a swastika being craved into a man's head in graphic detail? You failed to see the closeup of the face of a women as she was being strangled to death? Some of the stuff in that film almost amounted to snuff film.
Don't get the Star Trek love, good movie and all, certainly exceeded expectations but top 10 material?

There were some good comedies last year, including Zombieland and The Hangover which I thought were brilliant. Avatar had the most amazing graphics and special effects, and though the story was so-so, Cameron placed you into a whole new world.
1.Zombieland
2.Avatar
3.The Hangover
4. District 9 (great original sci-fi)
Worst goes to Funny People. A film that tried to be both moving and funny and managed to fail at both.

Because the kids love special affects over good scripts.
Best movies were.
Inglorious Basterds
A Serious Man
Burn After Reading
The Hangover
Paranormal Activity
Inglorious Basterds
I've been told by several people that Burn After Reading is a crock of shite.
1. Inglorious Basterds
2. The Hurt Locker

4. 500 Days of Summer

Avatar has some pretty deep themes if you take the time to sit back and look at it.
Sure it's a pretty simple storyline, but that shouldn't take anything away from the movie as I'm sure Cameron would have been criticized if he made it overly complex.
