View Full Version : Bi-annual Ch. 10 screening of 'Happy Gilmore' on now

wagstaff

Ch. 10 has a rather notorious record in recent years for showing certain films seemingly every second week, and 'Happy Gilmore' would have to be up there as the most shown.

It just so happens I can remember when it was last screened by Ch. 10 in Melbourne - the Friday night before the Grand Final which means its been less then 6 months since it was last shown. At a guess, it must have been shown around 5-6 times in the last 3 years. It must rate damn well.

I guess Ch. 10 got a shock when they realised they had virtually run out of James Bond films to show on a Saturday night and in their haste relied on a good old Adam Sandler double!

In anycase, are there any other films that people out there notice that seem to get shown particularly often on network TV?

Grendel
22 Mar 2003, 21:52
Old English drama and comedy on the ABC with a repeat ratio of once every two months (or it feels that way).

Much rather they just went with old repeats of Dr.Who, Blakes Seven, Porridige, Open all hours, Brideshead Revisited. They did repeat Phoneix and Janus recently, more of that type of thing would be welcome.

Channel Ten is the king of evil programming in this regard:

Happy Gilmore
Billy Madison
Kindergarten Cop
Parenthood
and most every Moore Bond movie (i.e. the bad ones)

Not to mention The Simpsons, Raymond, and ****ing Seinfeld...

Don't forget the Brady Bunch movies. They've been shown at least twice in the last 6 months.

Forrest Gump gets a token showing at least a couple of times a year.

The thing that annoys me more is when the tv stations play the last installment of a movie series over and over but never show the others that preceed them. Think James Bond, Die Hard, Indiana Jones etc.

I find that in the holiday periods, Maculay Culkin films are quite big on Channel 10. Richie Rich, the various installments of Home Alone etc.

Channel 10 is evidently a main offender in this instance.

Well spotted, I'd forgotten about that one as they haven't shown that in a while. Ch. 10 loved showing that on a Friday night. And apparently not much of a film either.

Actually, Ch. 10 loved showing several of Michael J. Fox's films ad nauseum for a period there - they must've shown 'Greed' at least 3 times in a two-year period.

And most strange of all, they show Back to the Future 2 & 3, usually together every 6-9 months, yet haven't shown the first BTTF (which was clearly the best one) for several years.

The quickest repeat screening of a film I've seen recently was when Ch. 9 showed the Village People film 'Can't Stop the Music' on New Year's Day this year, and then again on a Sunday afternoon a couple of weeks ago, presumably to coincide with the remnants of the band who were touring Australia at the time.

Bad Boys rules the 8.30 timeslot on Channel Seinfeld. It's on at least four times per year.

If The Truman Show is on again, that must mean the next series of Big Brother is not far away. Expect to see Ed TV in a couple of weeks if the Ch.10 programmers are following their standard pre-Big Brother checklist.

Last Action Hero and Bird On A Wire seem to be shown twice annualy on channel 10.

L.A.H is an embarrasment of a film and I'm surprised at how much its repeated.

I agree that Parenthood and Kindergarden Cop are shown way too often as well [even though Parenthood is a good film].

What a mazes me, just like they do with BTTF, is that they show the sequels more often than the original. This is the case with Jaws as well. Recently all 3 sequels were shown on channel 10. When was the last time the original was on?

Also, whens the last time The Gods Must Be Crazy, Cocoon, The Jerk or The Three Amigo's was on?

Its been ages! So next time channel 10 decides to schedule a light-hearted film for Friday eveneing - a good flick to get you in the mood for the weekend - instead of repeating a film they showed a few months ago, why not take another comedy or classic film out of the vault that has not been shown for years?

The funny thing about Bird On a Wire was, that made in 1990, it took about 6 or 7 years before it got its first run on Network TV. It rated very well, and was shown about 5 times in 3 years!

Only on Ch. 10.

Pretty Woman gets 2-3 screenings annually on Channel 7. Each time they hype it up by adding "Director's Cut etc" to the title in the hope that it will attract viewers. It must for them to keep on repeating it each year.

BTW, I love Happy Gilmore and the scene at the Mini-Golf would have to my favourite.

Groundhog Day has made it to Foxtel. Give it a year it will be on channel 4 - classic movies or whatever. Unless Bill Murray dies, or farts in public, in which case the programmers will jump at the chance to do a Bill Murray Movies Month.

As for playing sequels only, do the stations have a deal where they pay to show these movies for a certain time period? If they want them again they have to re-pay?

Face it, these old movies are probably cheap as chips and they get a decent "light-hearted, feel-good" audience so why would they bother putting anything better on?

What Ch10(They seem to have the most movie rights) needs to do is have the 8:30 saturday slot as "Vote-A-Movie". They can select 10-15 movies from their library, set up a Phone/SMS poll(like Big Brother) and screen the movie that gets the most votes. It lets them make money from the Phone/SMS charges AND screen a movie that rates well.

Anyway, Happy Gilmore and Air Force One have to be the most replayed movies on Australian TV currently. I've noticed that Channel 9 have also started to trot out all four Star Wars films over a four week period now and then as well.

Ten tried 'theme-related' movie nights a couple of years ago, and it was really good. Think they had a Sci Fi night, 80s night etc.

The SMS idea is a good one, although given its Ten we will probably be given a choice between Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore in Week 1, and Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison in Week 2.

Incidentially, according to Channel Ten, Gilmore won its timeslot in the 16-39 demographic on Friday night. No wonder they keep replaying it.
