View Full Version : 3 Game final would be a fair solution.

After over 50 games of WC cricket do you think it fair to judge the World Champion over one final?
I think a best of 3 would be the fairest way as cricket can be a funny game and upsets occur quite often.
Even a best of 2 game series with the winner winning on aggregate over the two games, it could add that bit more excitement.
I know it's been great having all this cricket to watch but should we be including the Minnows of cricket such as Bangladesh, Canada, Namibia and England?
I enjoyed watching these teams against each other but it was frustrating seeing these sides give others easy walks to the finals keeping out the traditional super powers such as the West Indies out of the final stages.
I just think it's a pity that with all the build up to the final and then a one game final jeopardizes both sides as a slight fault by either side ensures a World Champion.
I'd be disappointed to see the Aussies bow out after a lossless World Cup.
Nope. Stand up on the big day. No second chances for the final hurdle.

Well if thats the case why don't we just use a knock-out format for the whole world cup.
If Australia lose tonight is it fair to say India are better than Australia considering both sides had the same win loss ratio and Australia humiliated India by over 30 overs a few weeks prior?

3 games is the fairer solution but 1 game is the better solution.

I said final hurdle, NOT every hurdle. 3-match finals are boring, as the australian one-day series proves each year.

Well I would just keep it as 1 match and thats it.

3 games isn't a bad idea. It could work, and the atmosphere for a 3rd and deciding game would be electric, but I do also like the One Final idea.
It's a toughie.

No more than under the 1 game system, and with the possibility of a two-nil win, without having the buzz of a grand final.

But if the playoff had a 1-1 scoreline, there would probably be a bit of bad blood building and extra pressure on the players to pull out a win.

after that 50 overs the aussies put in i dont think india would show up for the next two
I like the one game final, but I'd prefer to see a final four system similar to the old footy finals - 1v2 for direct route to final, 3v4 elimination final, loser 1v2 plays winner 3v4 for final place. I think you'd have a better chance of the two best teams meeting in the final.

It's called a ONE-DAY tournament, what don't you understand about that ??
And as for that best of 2 games idea, you should be slapped for even trying to garner support for that doozy !!

It may be heresy but I think I've had just about enough.

I like the format we have now.
2 separate groups.
A knock out round.- (super sixes)
Semi finals
Finals.
Lets leave the rules alone. It's bad enough the AFL changes the rules every season, lets not allow it to happen to cricket.
Best of 3 is ok for the WSC which has 3 or 4 teams, but a world cup with all the international sides needs only one final.
As for the Minnows, lets leave them there, we need exposure to make it a real international game, plus it does bring up surprises.
Kenya is an good example for this world cup, as was Zimbabe in 83.
Sri Lanka have gone on to be a force in cricket after their initiation in the early 80s too.

Yeah after the final I realized it was the best solution, a silly thread after the result of the game but I was just thinking how unfair it would of been if Australia were to bow straight out after such a dominant tournament, there could of been some different views if the game was efffected by rain and India got the 158 off 25 overs, but still what a fantastic and deserving result for the Aussies.
