Neagle contracted till end of 2011 (http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/news.asp?nid=6980).

Pretty colours. Feel free to delete this post.

Anyone have an understanding of what Lovett's situation is? I'm a bit anxious that he'll be leaving at the end of the year if he still hasn't signed, and he has been pretty pivotal this year.

Anyone?

NLM, Nash and Williams are in trouble. Lucky for Leroy he has a year to go on his contract.

Atkinson, Jarrod - 2009 - In doubt still? Might get a new contract.
Bellchambers, Tom - 2009 - Will get a new contract
Daniher, Darcy - 2009 - Will get a new contract
Dyson, Ricky - 2009 - Will get a new contract
Fletcher, Dustin - 2009 (veteran) -Going to play on
Lloyd, Matthew - 2009 (veteran) - Hopefully plays on
Lovett, Andrew - 2009 - The club will surely sign him on for longer, he still wants to be here right?
Lovett-Murray, Nathan - 2009 - Will get a contract, small doubt
Lucas, Scott - 2009 - Retired
McPhee, Adam - 2009 - New contract
Nash, Jay - 2009 - Delist/Trade
Skipworth, Hayden - 2009 - I dunno. I'm thinking Knights would give him another year, but I'd think delist...
Welsh, Andrew - 2009 - Will get another contract
Williams, John - 2009 - Delist

We have to get rid of three yes? Lucas, Nash, Williams. With Atkinson, NLM and Skipworth the only other contenders I can see.

KaaN10

Delist Williams, Nash, Lucas(ret) and NLM or Skipworth.

Atkinson deserves a contract.

Thanks for the update Womb.

A lot of those 2010 contracts are vital players, I'd be happy if some of them were given extentions asap to keep GC away.

Actually.... NLM can stay :thumbsu:

Oh and by the way.... sign Hurley till 2015

Mrs Mercuri
29 Aug 2009, 21:16
Natrat isnt going anywhere... has been solid this year and very important in some big wins (especially over Hawthorn- both occasions- and in the Dreamtime game). Atkinson will surely be kept as well, has been very impressive in the latter part of the season.

Nash and Williams are definately gone, i still think the club might offer Jetta around on trade week even though he is contracted. Unfortunately i think Skipworth may be cut- but then he can be re-drafted if we dont find anyone else..

Lovett is the interesting one... thought i read a coupld of months back that he was close to signing a new 2 year deal... that better happen asap.

All these talks of contracts [McPhee] made me think of who else is out of contract come GC and GWS time. So I looked in here in hope of finding some up to date information.
But nooooo, that is too much to ask for the mods, because they have reaaaaal lives. ;)

But out of those listed, what can be updated?
Knights to 2012
Welsh to 2011
NLM to 2011
Omission of J. Williams, Skipworth, Nash, Lucas, Lloyd, Lovett, Caroll, German, Klemke and Magin

I am unsure on the contract lengths, so don't quote me on any of these, but:
Atkinson 2010
Bellchambers 2011
Daniher 2011
Dyson 2011
Fletcher 2010

Any others that anyone can think of?
Oh, and good job Dunlop/Womb for putting this together.

I was watching the video of the preseason testing last night, and the interview with Ashley Prescott. He speficially mentioned John Williams. What's the deal with that? Why is he still hanging around if they delisted him. Can they redraft him as a rookie?

Or did he just stuff up?

Slattery_20
12 Nov 2009, 09:57
I think rookie-ing him has always been some sort of an option.

He's had his shoulders re-contructed post-season, so I assume he'd be down @ the club with their medicoes anyway.

That's good. Thanks for that. I didn't think he would make a mistake. I wouldn't mind seeing John Williams get a go, if he can fit in..

ps: Is Hurley out of reach of the GWS as well?

nope. GWS have two years to rape & pillage honest teams.

However, the story goes that the TV rights kick in around that time, so any player/agent would be nuts to sign beyond then, as the salary cap will increase, giving automatic increases to players.

In summary, GWS can go **** a goat, as they have no chance :p

Was discussing this with my Essendon mate the other day, if you had to predict our minimum 3 delisting at the end of the year, who would they be? We got Laycock as a near certainty, Neagle a chance if he doesn't turn it around, and after that, well we both said Slattery, but obviously Knights isn't going to do that. I really hope it's not Atkinson. Unless i'm missing someone it leads me to believe that we will look to/have to trade someone like Houli/Lonergan etc.. for a draft pick?

james_omahoney

I would put $100 on Houli signing with Gold Coast. He'd be hungry for a decent opportunity to play seniors every week.

I think List management may not be as hard as I once thought.

I think Laycock's career is over due to injury (according to posts on Bomberblitz), then you lose 1 uncontracted player to GC who we will get a pick for (I really hope Stanton re-signs)

That leaves one more position. Fletcher may retire? (I am divided on this on the one hand he is a champion and clearly in our best 22 but on the other will not be part of our next premiership- not sure- I know he will make the right call either way though).

What is the rules on veterans upgrades? McVeigh and Hille? Houli may also request a trade.

Both Mcveigh and Hille are eligible for veteran's list next year, as they both turn 30 prior to the close of next season. 1 can be upgraded if Fletch stays, both if Fletch leaves.
We won't definitely lose a player to GC either. GC are targetting 8 uncontracted players, but they probably won't get that many, so there's a good chance they won't get anyone from us. Or if they do, Laycock may even be that man (they will need a few mature ruckmen which are very hard to find).

Duckworth
19 Jun 2010, 18:51
Thought I'd have a quick go at ranking the uncontracted players in order of importance for signing them up. Some of the 'veterans' are a bit lower due to me believing that they will be more inclined to see out their careers at our club.

I'm interested in others thoughts?

Stanton, Brent - priority 1. Always tries hard.
Gumbleton, Scott - slightly above the next few, due to being a KPP.
Jetta, Leroy
Davey, Alwyn
Monfries, Angus
Myers, David
McVeigh, Mark
Reimers, Kyle
Slattery, Henry
Fletcher, Dustin - not going anywhere
Slattery, Tyson
Atkinson, Jarrod
Still, Michael
Howlett, Ben
Lonergan, Sam
Laycock, Jason
Houli, Bachar

Before the seasons is over I hope Myers & Houli are given a few more GAMES and played in the MIDFIELD. I personally feel they are most suited to playing there, rather then in the backline. I'd be dissapointed if we lost either player at then end of the season, without giving them a decent opportunity.

So with today's news of re-signings, does that leave the list of uncontracted players as:

What's the minimum amount of delistings again? 3 or 4?

Delist: Atkinson (I like him, but I think enough's enough), Laycock (no reason needed), Jetta (re-rookie list?) and 4th option Howlett (re-rookie?)

Davey 2 years
Fletch 1 year
Lonergan 1 year
T Slattery 2 years
H Slattery 2 years (both get an extra year purely to ward off the GWS, otherwise would be giving 1)
Stanton 2 years
Still 2 years
Myers 1 year (actually got to the point I don't care whether GWS go after him)
Houli 2 years

I know im looking ahead 12 months but my god next year is a huge year for some players especially with their contracts set to expire (if their still that is):

Minimum of 3. Howlett will be promoted. We may use a draft pick on this, so that may mean only 2 get the flick, but i highly doubt it. Jetta not a chance to be re-rookied, he'd simply sign at another club.

Not exactly shocked by the McVeigh decision, but I don't agree with it. Looks to me like Laycock and Atkinson gone and unless we are to trade a contracted player or Stanton there are big question marks over the future of Houli, Jetta, and/or T Slattery. Very disappointed in this.

If we are to take 3 picks and upgrade Howlett with a fourth, that would mean (bar losing a player in a trade for a pick), we would be most likely de-listing Laycock, Atkinson, Jetta and Houli (the latter 2 potentially traded for better pick/s).

Am I right?

Would be happy to lose Lonergan but I doubt it will happen. It at least puts to bed the "It's not the coach, it's the players" excuse. We keep backing these guys in.

Why the heck would we delist Jetta and keep Quinn or Williams who've done a sum total of nothing over 2 or 3 years (respectively)?
Honestly I do not understand some people whatsoever.

It's all well and good to say 7 wins = delist everyone! but you have to think about the situation.
GC have about, roughly, a bazillion picks before we'll get to our 2nd.
Roughly 2 bazillion before we'll get to our rookie picks, some of which only they have access to.

ie - there will be almost ZERO chance of barlows or howletts for us, this time around. Maybe there will be some Mariglianises, but they'll be picking the eyes out of the WAFL etc

Quinn and Williams (John you mean, yeah?) are rookies. They don't count towards our primary list. The rules say we have to offload 3 from the primary list and take 3 picks in the ND as far as I know. So its at least Laycock, Atkinson and...

I wouldnt stress that you cant get decent rookies after GC and GWS have their choice - I think they have the first 18 selections

Rookies from 2009

19 Brodie Moles
24 Alex Silvagni
27 Andrew Strik
30 Ben Howlett
35 Andrew Hooper
40 Ashton hams
46 Matthew Jaensch
50 James podsiadly

rookies from 2008

19 Matthew De Boer
24 David Gourdis
27 jarryd Blair
30 Liam picken
40 Benjamin Speight
48 Clancee pearce
61 Carl petersen
74 Greg Broughton

As you can see rookie talent doesnt stop at Pick 18.

Houli 2 years

The rule is 3 changes to the primary list.

We could promote 1 player (Hille or McVeigh) to the veterans list, promote Howlett to the senior list, and delist 2 (primary list) and take 2 picks in the ND.

This is the minimum that we could do. You'd expect 3-4 ND picks with another change to come from a trade/delisting.

OP, are you still maintaining this - would love it if you were. Should still be sticky I reckon.

McVeigh, Gumbleton, Riemers are now signed on to 2012.

Quinn is out of contract? Then definitely. Didn't see his name there so I thought he was done by 2011.
AFAIK, all rookies are on one-year deals. If required they just roll 'em over.

Would not be surprised to see changes internally. ie Howlett, Silverlock to main list, replace with rookies. Those two are probably going to be better than anything we'll get with our 3rd-4th picks. But dunno the exact details of what the best way to do that is, ie would it be smarter to take ND picks and leave them as rookies.

I think you would be best of upgrading Howlett to the senior list and leaving Silverlock on the rookie list.

This way you can guarantee both players games if they are good enough.

Nope

THE AFL's draft camp and trade week would go ahead as scheduled next Monday, subject to the AFL clubs agreeing. It will mean players who contest the Grand Final could be up for trade as little as 40 hours later.

Note: I have no idea whether Hank has re-signed for two years or is going to re-sign for two years, so I haven't updated him.

I'll find out whether he has though.

Either way, he'll be here until 2012 at least.

So 7 uncontracted at the moment.

How many does it look like we'll be delisting? Lonergan, Laycock and Atkinson must go. Still on a 1-year deal, Houli hopefully re-signs and maybe give H.Slatts a one year deal (since he's our best small defender :o. Mcveigh will go further backwards imo)

Don't think he'd last to our rookie pick.

IIRC he was 'rated' (at least retrospectively by Ess insiders) as a likely 2009 first rounder when taken as an underager in 2008.

Must persist.

Tyson looked to have a bit of courage and played with passion, but you need more than that to compete at the highest level. Wasn't overly quick, didn't have above average skills; not losing much by chopping him off the list.

Still on the other hand, I felt another year may have been more beneficial. Looked to have the frame, smarts & skill to work with, just needs to build on that frame and build his confidence up with a couple of good games in the seniors and/or string half a dozen super games together in the VFL/SANFL/etc. Would be surprised if he doesn't get rookie listed come the rookie draft, the club that picks him up will have something to work with for sure.

Sam was always going to sign, the club was waiting to see how his knee came up before comitting 100%.
