Good idea.
Poorly executed.
After all the hype and it being nominated for Best Film, I was lookin forward to this film.
Nicole Kidman was brilliant, as was Meryl Streep and a great small supporting role from Ed Harris.
The movie is linked through 3 women of different times. Brought together by Virginia Woolf's novel 'Mrs Dalloway' which she is writing at the time. Virginia Woolf in the 1920's, Julianne's Moore character (reading the novel) as a disenchanted housewife in the 1950's, and Meryl Streep (Mrs.Dalloway) as a seemingly confident person who stars to fall apart in New York City, 2001. They try and link them together throughout the film and sometimes they are poor transisions. Sometimes a bit too jumpy.
They tried to dwell on the art of the living. Trying to fine contentment. Searching for a better life. Escaping your current predicament.
Very sombre film.
Not one ounce of happiness in the film. I don't mind that usually (some of my favourite films are like that), BUT ONLY IF IT IS SERVING A PURPOSE.
I wanted to know more about Virgina Wolf. They didn't dwell enough into it. They seemed fixated on making the movie bigger. Anyone seen 'Adaptation'? To quote Charlie Kaufman, "Why can't there be a film just about flowers?" Well, why couldn't there be a film just about Virginia Wolf? They made unnecessary complications to try and make it more interesting. What was wrong with making the story just on Virignia? Why did they have to expand it?
I saw it again because I was still fixated by the idea of it and thought that maybe I missed it the first time and my opinion might change with another viewing. While I did enjoy it more, I still stand by what I have said.
However, alot of people I know love this film and you might too. I suggest you see it and tell me what you thought. It is more of a female film. Dealing with women's issues. All the male's in this film are portrayed as holding the females' back.
Enjoy,

Is it true that Kidman is in it for a total of 24 mins ? Of a two hour film ? Did she pull any bunnyhops ?

31 minutes actually.
Because it is linked through 3 women, the time is pretty much divided between the 3 of them thus the shortness of her on-camera time.
However, believe me, she doesn't waste the time she is on.
Truly brilliant.
