View Full Version : Rule Changes for 2010

I know this could probably be posted on the main board, but I respect the opinion of Essendon supporters much more. Some rule changes I'd like to see for next year:
First Bounce: I think that the umpires should not be allowed to recall the first bounce of a game. It is such an anti climax. I hope it doesn't occur in a Grand Final.
Week off before Finals: To make it fair for all teams so that one team over another doesn't have more rest. I think that it will also lead to teams being able to field better squads due to the extra weeks rest.
Match Review Panel: Where do I start. There is still a lot of inconsistency in determining how many weeks someone gets.
Are there any other rule changes people would like to see? Thoughts?
I think players should be penalised when they take the ball over the boudry line after having prior oppertunity to dispose of the ball. Ive seen quiet a few times tackles that take the ball carrier out of play when the player has had heaps of time to get rid out it and hasnt, and all that happens is a throw in. If a player has prior oppertunity and doesnt correctly dispose of the ball it should be a free kick IMO

The whole concept of 'advantage' needs to be addressed. The umps have no idea. They need to watch a few games of union to understand how the advantage rule is supposed to work.

Advantage is a great rule in rugby but as a senior coach it can also drive you quite mad. Take last nights test - oz on the attack clear indiscretion from boks in 22 one phase ad played and then the penalty. We get three points but if play is allowed for four five phases we might get the try. If no try though we could lose the pen as we had taken the 'advantage'. As a result players often take a field goal to get the pen as happened at the start of last nights game.
In aussie rules how long is the play allowed to continue begore the advantage is lost?

How about we leave the Goddamn rules alone, get rid of this bullshit hands in the back and all the other crap the AFL have produced over the past 10 years, keep the one or two decent rules (I'd say the rushed behind rule has been very effective) and go back to decent football.
**** you Demetriou you egotistical prick.

What...
Its until the next possession I think, so if advantage is called, the player handballs it and the receiving player gets run down, they can't call it back.

Spot on. I have had a few issues with advantage calls this year. I don't think the whistle should be blown when it doesn't affect the flow of play. Just make a signal with arms to show it was recognised.
You can't blow a whistle so everyone stops but some bloke kept running and then call it advantage. Borderline cheating.

he could just yell out advantage... and blow the whistle if the play needs to be stopped.

Yeah i think the signaling would just be for the people watching so we'd know exactly what just happened.

I've been watching a few of those old games "Brut Classic Games" or whatever you call it from the 70's and 80's etc recently. Why was the 15 meter penalty abolished in the first place? I honestly like it. I think it's a reasonable penalty for minor offenses instead of a harsh (or questionable) 50m penalty which more often than not results in a certain goal.
Like holding on to the man for two seconds should equal 15
Punching someone on the head should equal 50
BRING BACK THE 15m !!

That is how it is adjudicated, but it is wrong. If the player receiving the ball gets run down then that is no advantage and the ball should be brought back for the original free kick. Similarly if a player plays on and kicks a behind then that is no advantage and the ball should be brought back for the original free kick. The umps are clueless.

Finally someone who understands the advantage rule. :thumbsu: In regards to your question, the time varies mainly because the umps have no idea.

Same problem in rugby at times. I have discussed with test refs and they are intimidated at times by firstly their discretion and secondly the state of the game (the closer the game the less advantage as the players would rather the points. aussie rules it would result in extra flooding by the defence (if play called back). It seems to me it would be easier to give the attacking team possession immediately and not have to Take it over the mark decreasing the opportunity for flooding. Does that make sense?
