I thought I'd share.
*Retiring from Int T20, but will still be available for Kolkata and Tasmania.

A formal decision regarding Ponting’s replacement as captain of the Twenty20 side will be made later in the year.
LOL. Big secret that one. And I will believe it when I see it re Punter playing big bash for Tasmania, thinly veiled comment to deflect retiring from Internationals and not IPL.

no surprise. the way we're going in the 50 overs maybe we don't need him there either.;)
Seems a bit silly to still play T20 for the state side and IPL, should retire from it completely!

Good. Such a bad game doesn't deserve such a great player playing it.

I have no problem with this at all if it will prolong his Test and ODI career I'm all for it!
pff. Seriously, the game only takes up about 3-6hours each tour they go on. whats the point retiring

His Kalcutta Knight riders contract is for 3 years so it will cost hi if he doesn't finish it.

Exactly. By the end of the year, they'll have played 9 T20Is, compared to 13 Tests and 33-35 ODIs.
It's a drop in the bucket, probably less than 5% of all cricket played terms of time on the field.

Does anyone else share my view that Michael Clarke is not necessarily in our best 20:20 side?
Could we see in say 12-18 months from now Ponting as test captain, Clarke as ODI captain and Cameron White as 20:20 captain?

Disagree, he's got a 3 year contract with the Knight Riders and seeing Ponting play in the Big Bash would do very well for the domestic competition.

So he flies to England, plays for 3-6 hours, then flies straight home?
What a strange comment.
By retiring from T20, it means he can spend more time at home or freshening up, and it'll be probably 4-6 weeks a year, possibly more at T20 grows.
Good on Punter, T20 might be the way of the future, but Test Cricket is the epitome of the game, he knows it, we know it - and he'll be the man to continue rebuilding our side.

Really?
If you look at the T20s we've played this year, all of them except the World T20 were sandwiched between the Test and ODI series. Makes it a bit difficult to fly home when you have to be back a week later. Sure, it'll give him a bit more of a relaxed schedule. But if he's serious about prolonging his career he'd give away ODI cricket, or at least exclude himself from the Big Bash / IPL (which take up plenty more time than the odd T20I).
Not that I think he should do any of those things, and I probably agree with this decision - he's not particularly suited to the game (relatively speaking), it frees up a development spot, etc. But it's not really going to reduce his workload much.

how much 20/20 will he play for tassie and the knight riders ?
i'm guessing the big bash overlaps or is real close to the pakistan test series.
the IPL overlaps with our tour to new zealand, so he won't play the whole IPL season if he plays at all.
*he's played the best T20I innings i've seen getting that 98 not out in the very first 20/20 international (mccallums was awesome too but that was in the IPL)

I think it is a good decision. In fact I would be in support of Hussey and Lee also retiring from Twenty20s.
Part of the reason why India's Twenty20 and ODI team has become so good was due to the senior players (Dravid, Tendulkar and Ganguly) not playing international Twenty20s which essentially unearthered players like Sharma, Raina, Pathan etc. who can get a taste of international cricket and translate it to ODIs with the experience of international cricket behind them.

Our T20 team should be for recently retired players, and under 23s.
Good on him, should also think about giving up ODIs in a year or two. Warney did it, and it gave him a few extra years of Test cricket.

Almost certain he will after the next World Cup.

Bet he still plays IPL though, assuming he gets a gig.

I don't think Clarke is in our best Twenty20 line-up.
He doesn't have the experience of the other guys, though I think he will be made captain.
However, if Ponting is Test captain, Clarke is ODI captain, and White as Twenty20 captain... that wouldn't be such a bad thing.
I don't think anyone should be playing all 3 forms internationally.

Meh... who cares really. Should retire from 50 over as wellTake an extended break, yes, retire from ODI's, no. His form over the past two years have been no less than abysmal. 27 innings and only 1 century & 4 half centuries to show for it is just not good enough. IMO, he should continue to rest up until the Champions Trophy later this month.

Should retire from Test Cricket and ODI's as well and let Hodgey get the spot that he deserves in the side.

Agree with this. The older guys like Hayden, Gilly, Warne and co can thrash it around for a few hours then have a few days break. Test matches obviously require the guys to back up for 5 days consecutively.
Makes NO sense to quit the quick stuff first.

It's not the actual match, it's the tour time. Retiring from bullshit 20-20 means he can be at home probably an extra two or three weeks per year which is a lot when you're away the amount these guys are.
He obviously values test cricket far more that 20-20 and I respect that.
