View Full Version : 3rd ODI England v Australia @ The Rose Bowl (Wednesday 11:30pm AEST start)

9 Sep 2009, 19:50
Not the greatest of times for some though the early risers can likely expect to catch the conclusion of this one.
Well 2 from 2 for Australia in the shorter form of the game, with the English batting proving to be a little bit more shit than the Australian batting so far. Or at least that is what some will say...
Australia may well go in unchanged again with Watson and White looking to convert starts more, Paine looking to show his class, Hussey and Clarke looking to show anything resembling form and Ferguson hoping he can continue his excellent start to his international career.
As in the last game whether any of the bowlers will get rotated is the only likely decision for the selectors.
England made a solid start to the chase in game 2 but came crumbling down in a heap rather quickly and will be hoping for more out of a shaky middle order.
Fine conditions again expected and the Rose Bowl has been a fairly high scoring venue of recent times so expect a high scoring affair.

I'm tipping this thread to have less than 30 replies during the match. Years gone by I'd wake up at around 5 and watch the last 2 and a half hours but I really cbf now. I need my sleep.

There has been a massive lack of interest in this series.
I think for starters it's because the 3 star players from each country are missing in Pietersen Flintoff and Ponting.
Additionally the time slots for the games in Aus.
Coming off the loss of the Ashes I think Aussie crowd probably don't care too much about this series.
Then the fact that there's 7 games...

I'll be following the score until I hit the bed.
I've got dollars on the English @$2.45.
I'll watch for an hour or two, but i am pretty tired. Reckon i'll be in bed by one.
Chucked some cash on first dismissal, went for LBW, paying $6.20.

0/40 after 7.
I'm pretty happy with my bet at this early stage.
Yay a wicket :thumbsu:
But it wasn't LBW :thumbsd:

Ferguson is a gun and will play many test matches for us imo.

Certainly has his foot in the door now.
Pretty even so far, with those two wickets.

There has been a massive lack of interest in this series.
England and ODI's just don't mix, or any other shorter format of the game, to be perfectly honest. Considering the talent and entertainment value from the missing England players and Australia (to a certain degree), the series result is a given.
England just plain suck, and we all know it. :)

Well it sure feels like Im talking to myself, but at least no-one will argue with me. Unless my online persona has a different point of view to my real persona, or are they both the same?
Anyway, I'm only up cos cricket is good company while I study for next weeks exam. England lucky to make 228. This could be the series right here if we go 3 up. Chances are at least 1 game of the last 4 will get washed out, and if by some miracle there is a result for all of them, England are too shit to pull off a miracle come from behind. Wouldn't you agree? Yes I would.
Now for the start of the Aussie innings. Looking forward to watching how our fergie goes here. 3 off the first over, not a bad start that.
Back to the study.

Can I ask who is Tim Paine?
I have been out of touch recently with ODI's and have just been watching tests and I must admit I've never heard of him.
Why is he playing? Do we have no other keepers at all? What has he done to be selected?
Would appreciate some info thanks

No idea mate. The first 2 games I only caught the England batting innings, so I've only seen his glove work which wasn't great the previous 2 games but better today.
And there goes Watson to an LBW decision. Gee what a surprise. You'd think he would practice nothing other than the straight pitch delivery in the nets to correct this batting flaw, but alas he plays across the line and gets out. Can't complain too much I guess he has been 1 of our better batsmen this tour, but the poms have figured him out.
Is Cameron White the best #3 ODI batsman in the country? Cmon selectors he plays 5 or 6, he pushes singles or slogs, thats what he has always been best at.
We kept them to less than 250 yeah but that doesn't mean you slow play the start of the innings like we are right now.

10 Sep 2009, 04:45
Well that tells u something about Paine. Played straight across the line of the ball and got out LBW to a medium pacer collingwood. Pathetic really. Why can't batsmen hit the straight ball back over the bowlers head ffs.

Pretty selfish innings by Michael Clarke. So many dot balls, no boundaries. Put all the pressure on white to stay in touch with the run chase. Even when white got close to his hundred and would have liked to get there by singles, clarke didn't go the tonk to take pressure off white.
That Clarke innings was the most boring I've seen since a mark Taylor test match. 52 off 91. And take that now your out. Almost cost your country the
match.
Well done Cameron white on a match winning 100!

Watson batting has been a let down after his Test and then the ODI against Scotland. His bowling is proving very handy though.
Great batting from White, has won us this game. Hopefully he can bat it out now.

The English suck at one day cricket.
I stayed up until 1am watching them bat and they didn't have a single batsman, other than Strauss, who looked completely comfortable. Most of them looked way out of their depth.
Shit, Sidebottom was like the 4th highest scorer and he looks unco with the bat.

I agree. I don't think Pieterson or Flintoff could save them even if they were fit and firing - that's how bad they're going.
At least Australia has some upside in this form of the game.

When was the last time Australia got away to a flyer (ODI's or even 20/20). These two aren't doing the job at the top going at 4 an over. All well and good for a shocking English side who don't have any top order dashes, but I feel that at the Champions Trophy we may get squashed in the early overs by the better teams (India, Sri Lanka, a full strength WI side) and then having to play catch up for the rest of the game.
Hopefully Marsh (not too sure where he is at) and Haddin will be back at the top of the order by then with Watto at 7/8 for some late order hitting. And Michael Clarke needs to be dropped, not batting well enough, not bowling, not hitting the stumps. I have a feeling he will be rested once Punter comes back in.

10 Sep 2009, 11:27
I still like Watson at the top he just needs to convert on his starts and avoid the dreaded straight ball. Marsh wasn't going much faster when he was opener and hes not in our Champions trophy squad anyway. Haddin isn't there but he isn't one that will get us off to flyers. Probably the only guys that could do that currently are Warner and Quinley but neither are consistent enough to stay at opener.
Shifty1
10 Sep 2009, 12:46
Yeah forgot about Warner, would like to see him get an extended run as opener, massive potential. Marsh averages over 41 @ 75 in 15 matches which is good, should look to strike above 80 as opener but his technique is much better than Watson's I feel. Also Haddin can go the dash as opener (current SR 83) so we have some attacking options at the top. Watto did I great job at the 2007 WC coming in late and I think that's where he's at his best.
Watto's technique at the top worries me still. Don't know if it's his frustration at getting out to the straighter one consistently but always seems unhappy walking off as if he's got an edge onto pad. Yet to see an lbw of his bat first and he's been lucky with several decisions. Good to see his bowling getting back to his best though.
WHITEY!!!!!!!!!
Bugger off Punter.

Does Ponting have to come back?
If he must, then White can't bat any lower than #4 while Ferguson has made the #5 position his own. The only real option is to drop one of Hopes or Hussey....

Not so much that he's selfish, more like he's not very good.

Clarke has modified his technique too heavily for Tests imho. He doesn't flash as much as he used to, which means he is more consistant but scores slowly. His test career has come on leaps and bounds but if you look at his SR in the last couple of years it has gone steadily down - it is no surprise his ODI strikerate is suffering too.

I cringe with Clarke opening, would rather Warner be given a shot opening or with that side, put Hussey to the top.

Only the VC of Tasmania. INFO (http://www.cricinfo.com/tasmania/content/player/7252.html#statistics)
Batting is technically very good as well as his keeping. Won 3 matches with last innings digs last Shield season and also the reason why Wade left to go to the Vics. He's also the best gloveman in Domestic cricket, he shits all over Haddin, but that wouldn't hard, obviously not as good with the bat. He usually opens the batting for Tasmania in the 1 Dayers, so I'm not sure why all these commentators are questioning his role.

Yup, his ODI cricket went down after he got dropped from the Test team, he totally curbed his aggressive flashy shots which used to cost him in tests but he has totally forgotten how to take it to the bowler in ODIs and should either open the innings or not bother batting at all at his strike rate.
Paine opening the innings won't win us the Champions Trophy so I think we should ditch that idea asap so we can give someone a decent little run leading into the tournament.
Yeah, never should have opened with Paine, let him settle in in the middle order.
Mystifying why Marsh hasn't been recalled yet.

He'll be given the opening role for most, if not all of this series to see if he can find his groove.

Paine is going alright at the top. 1st match some funny guy ran him out, 2nd match was more inexperience which led him to throw his wicket away. The last match he had a strike rate of over 80 quicker than both Clarke and Watson, his problem was not reading the slower ball. May as well give him the rest of the series unless we are going to try Johnson as opener. We know what Clarke can do at the top.
