Warren Tredrea: 100% accuracy from set shots!
Steven Salopek: 100% accuracy from shots on goal.

Toby Thurstans did well in his first game, seemed better equipped for the style of game played than Wakelin.

Dean Brogan is back next week, Josh Carr the week after.

You can get better odds backing Port to beat Brisbane next week now.

Primus is well rested and Tredrea's knee came well through another game.

Lade actually got involved in a bit of ground ball contesting, which was good to see, and won a few taps. No torps though.

Hardwick showed how real men deal with collisions and actually tried to tell the umpire not to report Cousins for a minor incident as opposed to what some netb..er..football teams do.

Monty still reads the play pretty well.

Francou can't play much worse.

Kane Cornes did a good job of shutting Cousins down mostly, with a couple of unfortunate lapses....and dobbed a good long goal that he'd normally spray.

Cochrane wasn't on for very long.

Choco didn't come up with any gaffes at the post-match press conference. Had a joke at Alan Shiell too, I think.
Shiell: Early games are critical Mark, obviously and...
Choco: ...actually I found last year that the late ones are the critical ones.

After that game from Toby, I'd hope to see him in the team next week and quite possibly for the rest of the year. He was certainly better than Bishop who had the same off day most of the players had, and will be a very good replacement for an injured Wakelin. The only worry I have is that when the senior players start returning Toby may be one of the first to get the boot. Mark Williams seems to make a lot of his selections on the "last in-first out" basis.

I'd expect James, Schofield and Brogan to definitely come into the side next week and possibly C-Collins, Kingsley and Wilson either this week or next with Carr coming in for round 3.

I reckon all but C-Collins will be in for rnd 4 with Cochrane, Cassisi, Guerra, Thurstans, Salopek and Lade/S.Burgoyne/K.Cornes going out. I'd like to see Salopek stay in the side for a bit though, he really played well and would be handy (aswell as great for his own experience) if he sat in a forward pocket or HFF in a similar role to the likes of Didak and Headland have played in previous years.

One positive is that with all players back into the side in a couple of weeks you are talking about having to leave out some good players like Lade, S.Burgoyne and K.Cornes, that can only be a good sign when these sort of players are missing out on spots. I think once we get a few wins up our sleaves we should quickly get our rythmn back and start to play with a bit more confidence which will lead to us playing much better footy. Port are very much a confidence side, if we are confident we can beat anyone and play the best football any side has ever played, but if we aren't clicking we can make the most simple mistakes possible, and it seems that every player becomes infected with the Adam Kingsley virus.

Put Francou, Stevens, James, Schofield and Carr into the midfield and we should play alot better footy, with Paxman, Wakelin, Bishop, Wanganeen, Hardwick and Montgomery holding together the back 6 and Tredrea, Cornes, Pickett, P.Burgoyne, Dew and S.Burgoyne in the forward 50 you can have the luxury of players like Wilson, Kingsley, Brogan and K.Cornes coming off the bench and we will be a hard unit to stop when in full flight, that team IMO is a better 'on paper' team than Brisbane, it is just a matter of turning 'on paper' to on field.

Well thanks for that post, for a while I thought it looked like we were totally outclassed and made to look slow and inept.

Good first goal from Tradrea but I thought he's missed the second.

Ah well, not much point dwelling on this, off to the main board to see what the trolls are cooking.

Williams dwells on the positives (http://portadelaidefc.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=81610)
Mic Cullen afl.com.au Sat 29 March, 2003

Despite losing to the West Coast Eagles by 48 points at a warm and humid Subiaco Oval on Saturday afternoon, Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams was still able to take some good away from the match.

The match was neck-and-neck for the first two terms, but the Eagles turned up the pressure in the third term, and despite kicking woefully for the first 10 minutes of the quarter, had a big enough buffer at the last break to comfortably hold off the Power’s surge in the last quarter.

Williams said after the game that there were still good points to take from one of the toughest road-trips in the AFL.

“We found some positives out of today,” Williams said.

“I was pleased that the boys could kick the five goals in the last quarter and run out the game.

“I thought it was a real battle to half-time – it was almost a battle of attrition, they were rotating their players, they had a lot of on-ballers to rotate, and they did that terrifically well, I thought.

“The third quarter really opened up for them, and they took most of their opportunities.

“It was good for us to see (Steven) Salopek play well and kick a couple of goals, (Toby) Thurstans did a few things and looked a likely type, so all that was good, and at the same time, we got some quarters under some of our players legs.

“That was always going to be a worry for us, given that it was a hottish day and how long could our guys last, and it was probably the story of the day as far as I was concerned – disappointed, but I was enthused by those things I said, and also the fact of a little bit of run there in the last quarter.”

Williams said that the missing players were just a fact of AFL life.

“We’re not going to make excuses at all – no team has all their players perfect any week, and you just have to make the most of what you can, and that’s what we’ll do.

“I think (Jarrad) Schofield may be considered, I think Che (****atoo-Collins) played very well in the SANFL last night, so there are some other options there, but again, the names might be there, but you need to make sure that they’ve had some quality training so that they can produce – you need game time as well, and as I said, we’ve got some players coming through with some good game time today, and that’ll hold them in good stead in the future.”

maybe he did watch rookie of the year ;)

not only his goals, but the "come on" to the boys after wards i think we needed a bit more of that

haha, i saw that good on Hardwick, i'm sure he has dealt a few of the elbows before!

i still think (IMO) that toby has to think quicker than he is doing... but he isnt as built as wakelin so has a bit more running power which is a good thing

Che played well for the magpies? only in patches, made more clangers. Poults should come back in though.

Tredders last quarter was excellent, Francou started getting the ball (His error just before half time was very costly). Chad cant play that bad again, and Toby showed why he will be in the side before Lade during the season.

Pickett was wasted in the forward lines and has got to learn how to tackle.

Yeah Che played well when he wasn't in defence...

Toby Thurstans played well first up.
