Essendon 2009 Season By Skeeta Olly and EFL Boy
Well done on a great season Bombers!
These votes comprise of all the weekly votes by Essendon Bigfooty members from round 1 to 22. The following results will show the top 3 players of each round.
Round 1
The opening round of the season sees Essendon head to Adelaide to face Port. Essendon suffer their first defeat of the season, but unearth a star in Michael Hurley.

Essendon return home to take on Fremantle at the Dome. Essendon come up with the 4 points with a commanding win, including a great game from Zaharakis!

This round sees Essendon take on rivals Carlton. After an amazing effort by the boys, Essendon come up trumps not only collecting the points, but bragging rights for at least the next 10 rounds.

Round 4
Essendon take on North Melbourne and suffer their 2nd loss of the season. Players fail to convert and pay on the score board.

It’s ANZAC Day and the boys don’t disappoint. Hille goes down with an ACL in the opening minutes and all looks lost, until Ryder steps up. Essendon are down, but career best games from Ryder and Dyson and a booming goal from ZAHARAKIS allow them to bring homes the 4 points.

Round 6
The Dons head up to the Gabba to take on the Lions, looking to have a win interstate. Much like the Kangaroos’s game, turnovers are costly and the Bombers take another defeat.

Round 7
Essendon return to the Dome to take on the 2008 Premiers, Hawthron. They come out guns blazing and take away a commanding win. Monfries shows off his lock down abilities by taking Hawk star Luke Hodge out of the game.

Essendon take on the undefeated Saints at the Dome. Giving it their all, the Dons go down by only 3 goals.

Dreamtime at the ‘G sees the Dons take on the Tigers. After trailing at halftime, the Bombers take control and run out winners by a comfortable margin.

Essendon take on the unbeaten Geelong. The Dons get blown out of the water and take a heavy loss with Steve Johnson having a dominating game for the cats.

Essendon take on Adelaide at the Dome, welcoming former Cat Brent Prismall into the team. After a good ¾ effort, Adelaide run out winners.

Essendon take on the Demons at the Dome. After a slow start, the bombers take control of the game and come out winners.

10 rounds on and Essendon and Carlton prepare to do battle again. Essendon loses Watson at halftime with scores slightly in Carlton’s favour. But the Dons come out and blast them away in the 3rd and 4th quarters to come out winners.

Essendon take on Collingwood for the second time this year at the ‘G. This match doesn’t produce the same result as last time, with the flat footed Bombers going down to the Pies.

Essendon head off to Sydney to take on the Swans. The Dons win their first and only interstate game of the year.

The Bombers are back at the Dome and take on the Western Bulldogs. After keeping up with them to half time, combined with shocking umpiring, the Dons let the game go, losing by 34 points.

The Bombers find themselves at the ‘G against the Tigers once again. Trailing by a similar margin at halftime to their last match, the bombers aren’t able to win, even after a comeback .

The Bombers head off to Subiaco to take on the Eagles but trump the previous week’ss performance with a near season worst.

The Dons find themselves at the ‘G again playing the Lions, hoping to find some form. Leading, in the dying minutes Lonergan coughs up the ball, resulting in a ball up, clearance and a goal by Bradshaw after the siren to tie up the game.

Round 20
The Bombers are at the Dome taking on the unbeaten Saints. The Bombers play their best game of the season, smashing the Saints up to ¾ time. Suddenly, the Bombers start losing players and are force to try and save the game. With seconds left, Riewoldt marks the ball 45 out. He goes back to kick after the siren and misses. The Dons win!

The Bombers are back at Subiaco to take on Fremantle. Again, produce a poor performance and lose by 54 points.

The Bombers head to the ‘G for the decider against Hawthorn, the winner taking 8th spot. At half time the Bombers find themselves behind. Coming out after the break, Matthew Lloyd makes a statement and in the process K.O’s Hawk, Brad Sewell. This sparks the Bombers who go on to take 8th spot and a victory.

This concludes the 2009 season. Below are the top 3 players.
At three we have Patrick Ryder. When David Hille went down in the opening moments on the ANZAC Day match, the Bombers were left with 1 ruckman to ruck out the game. Ryder put in an amazing performance, combined with the hard running of Dyson and Lovett, and won the game. Throughout this year Ryder has stepped up when needed and leapt higher than his opponents.

3. Patrick Ryder – 324 Votes
At two, we have Jason Winderlich. Overcoming a near career ending back injury last year with a limited preseason the Bomber came out firing, adding dash to the Bomber midfield, and when needed, a marking option up forward. This year marks Jason’s best season to date.

At Number one, we have Jobe Watson. This season Jobe has stood up when needed, becoming one of the best clearance players in the competition. He has stared on a consistent basis, polling votes form Bigfooty members in most rounds. Jobe has been by far the best player this season for the Bombers.
