Only two eligible, Reilly and Mattner. Reilly didn't have much gametime but looked good when on the ground. Mattner tried but was well beaten by Medhurst. Do I just give 3 to Reilly and 2 to Mattner or what?

I think it would be a good idea!
One person chosen for the Rookie award would work well.
I vote for that.

5 Edwards - slick!
4 McLeod
3 Torney - I like this guy, he puts his body on the line and does some tough things.
2 Roo
1 Carey - tried hard in the first quarter and got going in the second. The way he crashed into that pack was scary. He provides some real presence up forward.
Top Team Man
3 Carey
2 Torney
1 Stevens
Rookie
Reily - kicked some good goals and that smother was fantastic!
The Saints might really cop it next week... Theyve got lots of injuries, they're playing kids and some players returning from injury havent had much match practice.
CONGRATS TO BENNY HART!

I thought both of our recruits played very good games. Torney did all the tough stuff picking up 27 touches and even kicking a goal and setting up 1 or 2.
Carey got better as the game went on. He is still abit rusty but really showed a sign of things to come in 3rd quarter.
I was laughing watching Bode in the 1st half. Every time the ball went towards Carey, he couldn't get in front of the King quick enough. He really ran after it full on. I think Mattner was outplayed by Medhurst.

He was Stiffy, but like Polak on Carey, both coaches left them there all day, as the lessons they learnt today will be invaluable.
I think this was probably the only losing position the Crows had for the day.

Our midfield is pretty scary.:D Freo has a good midfield but we made them look 2nd rate today. Roo playing on the wing is a real luxury. Torney looked awsome in the midfield.

Edwards
Bode

Our midfield is great but I was more impressed with our forward line. With Carey (underdone)' Stevens (clearly not 100%) and Perrie as 3 talls, they provided a lot of opportunities for the crumbers as well as taking marks and kicking goals. They took 20 marks between them and kicked 10 goals. With Scott Welsh to come back in and an in form Ronnie Burns we look set to have a lot of big days out in front of goal.
In the words of big Kev:rolleyes: I'M EXCITED!!!!!!:D Still a lot of improvement left in the side:D

I agree. Mattner will learn from today's game. Medhurst is one of those players that are hard to contain.
From fremantle side:
I really like the look of Polak. He is going to be a superstar and doesn't mind the physical stuff. He did get beaten by Carey but he showed a lot of positives. As his body matures I really think he will become one of the best CHF of the AFL.
Bryon Schammer showed some promising signs in his 1st AFL game and the scary thing is he is still only 17. I wouldn't mind seeing him in tri-colors in a couple of years :D
I don't mind the look of man mountain Sandilands. I certainly wouldn't mind swapping out No.31 with Freo's No.31:D :D :D :D :D :D

Is that a typo, as I didnt think Sarge was that good?
As for Carey, he may have looked a bit stiff, but he really threw himself in there. Kicked 4 and helped set up three others - Bode, reily and Stevens. Lookout when he hits top form!

Spog you do your allegiance to Sturt a great deal of harm when you vote for somebody who was comprehensively carved up.....Mattner will learn from it though and Im sure had the game not been blown away at quarter time he would have been dragged.
Carey has come to town, great stuff with pack crashing and blocks. The hierarchy will be stoked at 4 goals not to mention the couple he dished out.
It was a very even team performance. I could quite easily have voted for Perrie Burton & Bassett too. Goodwin and Hart had quiet games; so to win well without thier contribution was sh*thot.
Bring on the Aints...
Congratulation Ben Hart;)

I would be happy if he keeps putting in performances like today. Perrie looks to have really improved over the pre-season. In the past we were struggling for tall forward capable of taking marks and kicking goals. Now we have 3 with youngsters like Hentschel waiting in the wings:D It looks to be embarasment of riches in our forward line.:D

Also just like to add how impressed I was with Reilly's chase on Headland in the 4th qrt (I think it was). He never gave up, showed damn strong determination, and executed a great grab to spoil Headland's goal. All this, and we were already 10 goals up. That's champion material there. Full marks for that effort.

I think the "problem" with having so much depth is that we are going to have less eligible rookies playing this year. Under the criteria we used last year - any player under 23 who has played less than a season worth of games, only the following qualify:
Bock, Nathan
Hentschel, Trent
Jericho, Luke
Mattner, Martin
Reilly, Brent
Rutten, Ben
Schuback, Jacob
Smith, Matthew
As suggested, we could reduce to only 1 vote for best rookie, otherwise players will be getting it by default even if they play a poor game. The other option is to adjust the criteria - eg. up to 50 games? I will leave it up to the masses to decide.

Barring injuries we won't have too many rookies playing this year. I think that we should still use the 3,2,1 system, but apply it to each rookie's game.
Today I gave Reilly a 3 on that basis and Mattner a 1. On another day if both played well, they could each get 3, or if they both played badly there would be no votes.
In other words just rate each rookie from 0 to 3.
What do you think of that basis for giving votes??
I like the one vote for a rookie idea.

To give him more time, I got the impression last year with the way Gary used Graham!!
Used him sparingly, youngsters dont need too much pressure put on them, ease their way into it............. hes got years and years at this club before him!!!
Im surprised more people havent included Brett Burton in their votes, while Im not a huge Bird Man fan, I reckon thats the best game hes played in a couple of years and what a luxury to have him running off the wing and/or half back!!!!!
