The same question is often asked of Bradman. What would his career have been like had it not been for the war.

In the case of Hassett, it is a more relevant question. These would have been his more productive years as a cricketer.

Hassett once wrote "I had a rather uncommon Test career. I played my fourth Test match at the age of 24 and my fifth when I was 33."

Hassett was overlooked as captain for the 1946 tour in favour of Bill Brown. Bradman had expected Hassett to succeed him. But Hassett won the position for the 1949/50 tour of New Zealand.

Hassett is considered one of the best post war captains, right up there with the likes of Ian Chappell and Benaud.

Hassett played 43 Tests with a batting average of 46.56. His HS was 198 no against India in Adelaide in 1947/48.

Hassett played 216 first class matches with an average of 58.24, with a highest score of 232 for Victoria v NSW in Melbourne during the 1950/51 season.

He used to be - and probably was the first - special comments guy for the ABC on radio. Very chatty and knew all the 'names'. I think he even smoked a pipe ! From Geelong.
